- The DM20 delivers world-class Earthworks sonics along with the reliability you need for live sound applications. With the ruggedness to withstand errant stick hits, the DM20 takes the worry out of close positioning on snare and tom toms. In this video, Mitch Gallagher and Nick D'Virgilio demonstrate this mic along with the Earthworks DK25/L drum mic system.

love, love, love this system! Finally a great video showcasing the earth works drum mic system! SOLD
Love Mitch and Nick....love these gear videos, especially drum tech
Love that DM20
Thanks for this video. To my ears/taste, the overhead mics are the best part of this system. I found the solo'd snare sound unremarkable though - maybe not the greatest match for that particular drum. I also would have liked to hear the DM20 on toms. But that kick sound... it was... not good. Even with the OH mics, it sounded like it was blowing out the capsule, even though the likelihood of that happening is pretty much nil. Bottom line is, that didn't sound like a kick drum - more like someone hitting a love-sack with their hands. I wonder if it would sound the same on other drums.
Agreed. Kick sound was farty, sounded overloaded. Are we the only ones hearing this?
also agree. maybe pulling it out of the soundhole a bit would help, but i think it was mostly the tuning/setup of the kick. i have noticed in other vids that i'm not particularly a fan of the kick pad either. glad they show the demos with and without it. overheads are AMAZING. isolation is EXTREMELY impressive. the snare mic captured that snare perfectly- you can hear EVERY little nuance of it. A snare mic like that gives an engineer a LOT to work with. (easy to eq and compress out the sounds you don't want when they're recorded that pristinely). overall, very impressive set of mics. very solid drummer. not the way i'd tune the set - But let's face it... it never is!
same impression with the kick. for micing inside the bassdrum i prefer boundaries anyway
I use earthworks for overheads and room mics. You can find a patched pair fairly cheap.
Completely agree. There's no character. Just... Signal. Love the sound of the other mics though. The overheads are surprisingly great and the snare captures everything that sounds not great about the snare 😂
Fantastic❤ I like it more.
If someone would be able to compare DM 20 with Shure beta 98amp, i would be very grateful. Cheers!
I would love to see a DM20 on other sources. I used them today just for fun on a Gibson Advanced Jumbo. My go-to is a pair of Schoeps CMC6s, which are considered to be about as accurate as there is. I think I prefer the sound of the DM20. I haven't tried it in a mix, but it makes me wonder what it would sound like on other sources too. At around $330 it's a bargain.
Isolation is crazy !!!!
It’s kind of normal with small diaphragm Condensers.
Those toms sound sweet, not a fan of the snare though.
Mics are awesome what are the cymbals and hats in this video??
can you use the Earthworks DM20 on toms/snare with the Focusrite Scarlett/Clarett without making it clipping? I'm about to buy Earthworks DK7 (their 7-mic drum System) and my only concern is I use a Focusrite 8PreX and I'm afraid the microphone's output might be too hot for this pres (since I don't have any pad).
Hey, Manuel! Thanks for the note. Great question! You can absolutely use the DM20 on the toms/snare with that preamp. Is it the best one to do the job? Depends on the sound. Each preamp will react different, have sonic differences, and different components to properly take care of voltage.
Give me a call and we chat through this! Also - have you shopped with Sweetwater before?

OMG WANT
Snare sound was incredible, but, Jesus, that kick sound. No thank you.
I wasn’t crazy about the kick either but everything else was nice
Great looking and functional mics but over-priced in my opinion. I'll stick with my Samsons that sound great through a PA. Commence the snickering.
