    The more time I've spend modifying my suspension, the more I'm understanding the value of factory components. There are great aftermarket components but with proper engineering comes a proper price point too. My greatest advice to anyone wanting to off-road on a budget is to keep your suspension as close to stock as you can. Slightly taller springs, sub 2", paired with matched shocks will generally not require much afterthought but will allow for a taller tire thus gaining more ground clearance & contact patch. Id also say get out there with your stock rig and see where its limitations are, based on where you want to take it and do take it, and then see what is worth spending money on making modifications.

    A 12v cooler is great to have although it also requires a battery unit to run it if you don't want to wake up to a dead battery, I have a 54qt unit and originally I got a Jackery 300 to run it which would be fine in cooler weather but in Texas during the summer is wasn't enough, I needed something with over 1200wh which I now have plus some solar to go with, including cooler about a $1500 investment.

    I’ve had pretty good luck with mods over the years, but I messed up choosing a rig once. I bought a 1999 Isuzu Trooper. That thing was a BEAST offroad. But it burned oil, got maybe 8 mpg highway, was loud, and the 4wd had a mind of its own. Eventually it was so unpleasant and expensive to run, I didn’t want to take it anywhere and eventually sold it for pennies.

    Spacer lifts have a place- 1/4-1/2” spacers are great for helping with squat.
    Shocks are the most seriously under budgeted and under prioritized item on any rig. Spending the coin on GREAT shocks, and then spending the money to have them truly tuned…. Changes everything.
    The nerf bars! All truth!!! 🤣😂
    A few moments on drop brackets would be good- they are great for over landing. Have even heard of guys saying “if your catching on drop brackets or control arm mounts you have bigger problems”- evo high clearance kit…. All day every day! No more catching on mounts- arms are bent for higher clearance… phenomenal design.

    • @Venture2Roam
      @Venture2Roam  Před rokem

      I used air bags for squat. But I never considered a bump stop lift for that. Good point. The problem is when a body lift is thought of like a new suspension. Totally agree with you on shocks. Thanks for watching!!

    @tonyk1amt806 Před 9 měsíci

    I think some spacer lifts are good (Epic Adventure Outfitters has installed Teraflex performance spacer lifts on projects and I have faith in them that they wouldn't install products they wouldn't run on their own rigs) but I agree there are many that are a bad idea. Great video, very entertaining and informative, funny as well.

    • @Venture2Roam
      @Venture2Roam  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Spacers definitely have their place, but I’m not confident they improve your suspension…but they can make just enough room for bigger tires in certain situations.

    • @tonyk1amt806
      @tonyk1amt806 Před 9 měsíci

      I agree that they don't improve suspension, just that good quality ones can give the clearance wanted, for bigger tires, or just more clearance. I'm currently looking at doing a teraflex base 2.5" spring lift kit, not a lot more than their spacer lift, and can upgrade shocks when the budget allows. Tired of rubbing the belly on my JLU. Honestly, Never done a bad mod. But then I have been modding for 3 decades and off roading for most of that. Even off roaded a 4" off the floor front wheel drive. Now that teaches you stuff!
    A lot of people do poor mods to suspensions. Personally, mine is standard height, added helper springs and Anti-Roll Bars. still get full articulation so it's fine. better for road use. Dampers, now they are not kept standard. The most important part of the on road set up.
    Yep, go rocksliders, I'll be making my own soon. It's a Defender, don't technically need them, but it might save scratching my nice galvanised cill rails.
    Agree with poor headlights are terrible, so the standard 7" headlights got swapped out ofr Wypac Crystal's, look good and better lamps. will be going blue bulbs later on as they increase rthe usability of the lamp a lot, expecially in fog.
    Coolers, even electric ones, gret for travelling, not good for camps. Just buy a proper 12v compressor fridge.

    liked the video overall, but I think we have some term confusion. The Idea behind the "Nerf Bar" comment is correct, but I am not sure about the term. Nerf Bars as originally devised are actually functional equipment. originally, nerf bars were installed on race cars as basically side bumpers in the case of "nerfs" or side to side contact (since they are meant to actually protect against contact they were welded to frame out of appropriate DOM to hold car weight or more) . for off road cars I have usually seen the term used in the same way to describe loops that are functional (ie should hold the weight of the car) the are welded onto rock sliders to provide vertical protection from side impacts. they are usually tight to the body and welded on an upward angle to protect lower doors and sills, thus they dont impact clearance because the slider portion is still the lowest portion which should be even with or above frame rails. they may still provide a bit of a step function, but thats more like a step out rather than a step up (more like a porch than a ladder) since the nerf bar should be at the height of the slider or above.
    Running boards or sidesteps on the other hand dont provide any kind of vehicle holding or sliding functionality. they are merely for aesthetics or to provide a step up. I understand that many side steps like the one you guys pictured in the vid are designed to look tough, but I wouldnt call them "nerf bars".
    a good way to look at it from my perspective is you can actually have all 3 things rocksliders, nerfbars, and steps in the same package or separately. Jeep Rubicons come with rock sliders from the factory but dont come with nerf bars to protect the side sill and lower door. Toyota 4 runners (2015+) offer a rock slider with a nerfbar oem where the bar sticks out past the side of the truck to give side impact protection. finally, rock slide engineering has rock sliders with power side steps that drop down automatically when the door opens, but retract for offroading.
    looking around, I feel like this term "nerf bars" has really kindof been absorbed into non functional (for actual offroading anyway) steps so I am probably just out of touch. I like having terms for all three though, so I would ask what would you call an extension of the rockslider that comes up above the sill (or at least parallel with and out) to prevent against side impacts if not nerf bars? how would you differentiate between those and rails that are only designed to protect against impacts from below?
    anyway just my 2 cents.

    The worst thing I have ever done, is buy a cheap air pump for $20 at a local auto parts store. Lets just say it couldn't fully air up 4 of my 31 inch tires after driving on a beach. Luckily I was only few miles away from a gas station that had free air.
    Im not saying a 4 inch lift is stupid, but you don't need it for overloading. Plenty of people safely overland on stock height suspension. A 2 inch lift is more than enough for most people. My main point, its stupid to spend money one something you don't need or will rarely use. People drop $10k on large tires and suspension and barely use it. Buy what you actually need, not what want or what other people have.

    Spacer lift, pucks or drop bracket lifts do nothing but make the rig higher, but it will indeed handle even worse with higher COG and inferior springs/struts, etc.

    Hey I'll show you that I am fully capable off-road in my full size with nerf bars. I'm 5'2 and require them for my lifted truck but that doesn't in any way mean I am an inexperienced driver... 😂 but then again I sit in parking lots laughing at jeep builds so I guess it's only fair. 😅😂

      @KelliGrayoffroad Před rokem

      And to be fair my truck wasn't built only for rocks it was more built to take on the Owyhee County mud so there is that too but we will ignore that part lol 😅 but it's pretty cocky to claim that nerf bars means I can't drive offroad. Although all other points are spot on.

      You’re right. Nerf bars don’t mean you are a bad driver. You actually have to be a very good driver to have them and not damage your rig when driving difficult trails.

      Haha won't argue there 😆 I just have to poke where I can. Sliders are definitely the better option

    I would greatly disagree that suspension and tires are the most important for off roading, lockers should be your first modification for off roading!

      Interesting choice! To each their own. Lockers are an incredible improvement. IMO you get way more performance improvement for 95% of your offroad driving by improving your suspension and tires, while lockers will give you a significant benefit, but for me, usually only in circumstances/situations where I'd need good tires and suspension to begin with.

    Turn off the background music. It is beyond me why CZcams content creators think playing background music over their voice is somehow enhancing their videos, it is not, it is distracting. We came to hear you, not to fight background music which quickly becomes extremely annoying and intrusive. Many folks have hearing difficulties, thus while concentrating on your voice they must also concentrate on tuning out the music; frustrating. Your background music ruins an otherwise exceptionally good presentation.

      I hear you loud and clear. It was a little bit of an overkill rant, but I understand your point. I probably won’t change my style based on this comment, but it’s something to think about. You should check out Coddiewomple overland. No music ever. I bet you’ll love it!

    These mistakes are hilariously comical. First mistake is trying to buid a serious rig out of a newer truck. Get you a straight axle vehicle. A vehicle thatbwas built to last from factory.

      What rig would you choose??

      @@Venture2Roam depends what you're building it for. Overland or rock crawler. Might need a truck over an suv or a jeep but you cant go wrong with a 90's jeep cherokee or toyota. A jeep TJ if you dont need alot of room.

    Don’t do any lift.

      Lifting a rig is definitely optional. It all depends on the types of trails you want to drive.
