- At Vista Hermosa’s tortilla factory in Piscataway, New Jersey, workers make 100,000 corn tortillas and 30,000 flour tortillas a day. From there, they supply their tortillas to one of NYC’s favorite taco chains, Tacombi, and independent grocers throughout the country.

I own a tortilla company here in Hawaii. We use the exact same process but on a much smaller scale. It’s motivating to see these guys stay true to the roots of masa on a huge scale! Keep up the good work! Viva la masa.
This is for La Maza - Kid Frost (Raza Remix) 1990
@@mysticstylez5854 Quvo, aquí estoy MC Kid Frost, Yo soy jefe, patron, yes the big boss.
Are you guys the tortilla company based out of the Big Island?
@@Spanishfutbol2010 We are Colibrí Tortilla based out of the big island. There are several tortilla companies out here but we’re the only ones using the nixtamal process. Have you heard of us?
heisenberg is in the basement and make meth the name from the guy LUL AHAHAHAHA
My favorite memory as a child was living next door to my friend Louis. Me being this pasty white kid who was a picky eater became friends with him and his family that were from Mexico. His mother had a shed out back if you can call it that. More of a lean to I guess. And she made her own home made corn tortillas over a fire. I used to sneak out at supper time just so I didnt have to eat some lame ass American food lol. They were so welcoming and loving that I started going to church with them. I had never been to a Catholic church before them and most of the attendees were Mexican. I'll tell you one thing if they ever try to welcome you into their circle they will never forget you. I'm 29 now I was like 8 years old then. I went away to college kept in touch with Louis and his parents the whole time and I still show up every thanksgiving and Christmas and receive regular packages in the mail of her amazing tortillas. Shout out to Louis and his mom I love y'all.
So your Mexican you just haven't figured out bro. 😂😂 I'm Mexican American this is why it's awesome to have 2 cultures
@@josechavolla7186 yeah it's like I was adopted so pretty much lol
You are mexican, you were born in another country. Chavela Vargas said: "Los mexicanos nacemos donde nos da la gana" (We Mexicans are born where we want). Sorry if is not the correct translation, english is not my first language
Mexican isnt a race
In Sweden, if a son/daughter has a friend visiting the home they make the child's friend go wait in another room while the family eats.
My dude is bald but he got the hairnet on. Respect.
Brah 😂
😂
That’s a good one! 😂😂😂😂
Lol
It is to trap the sweat drops from the head.
I appreciate their respect for their ingredients, and the amount of research they've put into their corn. Beautiful stuff.
I like how this guy acknowledges the Aztec/Mayan knowledge of food and agriculture. They really were very sophisticated in so many ways, let alone producing extremely nutritious and filling food for what was a huge population in an ancient civilization
No they were savages. They practiced slavery and human sacrifice. Canceled.
Aztecs also sacrificed Virgins and prisoners as war in the most vicious ways...You'd think they would at least defile the virgins before sacrificing them...such as waste.
@@TTTHC just like Europeans torturing "witches" to death and sinners in the name of the catholic church while bringing slaves from Africa? Gotcha. It seems like Humans are cruel andretarded no matter where you look. Now go keep playing fortnite kid.
@@TTTHC Yeah, and so did the religions/ civilizations in the old world, as for Christianity people were sacrificed to god more often than to satan and even then that's not everything. Just look at the Christian/cathloic Crusades, wars that killed thousands including children all for the sake of God and reclaiming a "holy" land.
Scalping, a gruesome practice associated with New world "barbarism" was actually a practice started by Spanish conquistadors as a form of trophies, this deeply scared the surviors that the practice was adopted as a form of revenge for the anguish it caused. This is yet another form of crusade you can say.
Yes, Mayans and Aztecs did human sacrifices, a practice that has been done countlessly done throughout the known world, but is somehow seen as barbaric when they end up doing it because "????" that they are not from "old world" civilizations. Personally, Humans sacrifice is not my Forte but looking back at it from a humanity and its history, its practically another aspect of being human at this point.
Bit pretentious to say "extremely"....
I’m a Mexican and I’m so proud to see so much appreciation for tortillas from people outside of Mexico. They look amazing and properly done; the owners truthfully love tortillas and it shows. The taqueria, executed as a real taqueria is, not the Taco Bell adaptation or anything (not hating on TB btw), is incredibly joyful to see. In other words: ¡eso chinga’o!.
Eater keeps on producing these awesome videos. Really nice to see the work behind the scenes.
I really respect the way Jason was correctly pronouncing all the specific words for the foods and processes. His knowledge shone through. Impressive operation. I wish I could get these great products over here in England.
Without the nixtamalisation process, people who subsisted mostly on corn would have died from niacin defiency (pellagra). Incredible that it is still used
I had the pleasure of doing some HR work for this company. I witnessed the company (Tacombi and Vista Hermosa) beautiful dedication and be heavily invested to the Mexican Culture. Therefore, when it comes to their ingredients, I can say that is true; everything they make is organic, genuine and fresh, EVERY DAY! In addition, the company has high standards when it comes to maintaining a clean facility. Although, I enjoy their flour tortillas, everything they make from tortillas to nachos, are amazing! You can find their tortillas in most organic supermarkets and Tacombi restaurants.
Could you tell me where are they located? Thank you.
They taste delicious with fresh Mexican cheese (queso fresco).
The perfect tortilla is made by grandma all by hand, and cooked over a wooden fire.
Good morning guys. in college, years ago, I worked at Frito Lay. the dorito/tostito line was nearly identical to this process except, commercial corn not organic and then fried and seasoned. Of course the scale was much larger. 10 people could produce 100,000 of Doritos/Tostitos in an 8 hours shift, all natural process for the plain chips (just salt). watching this really brought me back to that time on my life. The money was good and I needed it for school. Thanks,
How much money did you make?
Paul how much money did they pay you while you worked that job at Frito Lay? Interested in knowing
When I used to live in Japan, I use to go to a small Mexican joint and they had a tortilla maker imported from Mexico. They use to make all their tortillas fresh and it was really good. But apparently the owner bought it bc in Japan tortillas are really hard to get.
I lived in Japan - you can get them they’re just expensive AF! Pack of 5 sold for like $15! I’ve made my own ever since lol
It’s great to see who a product,is made, and learn what it takes to make a great product so can have a great tortilla to have with your meal.
Tortillas have become some sort of a universal food that nearly everyone has obvious access to. The ingredients are practical and they're easy to prepare. Perfect for on the go shenanigans.
Great job, all around. This might actually make me go into Whole Foods and see if I can find them! They look so good. Thanks again, Eater.
I’d dish out a few more bucks if their products are more expensive than big brands. Not only is it the American dream realized, but it’s an honest and transparent product.
I'm from Los Angeles. I went to this place when I went on a business trip to Carlstadt in NJ. This place is delicious.
Definitely made some tacos while watching this. Nothin better than a toasty corn tortilla 🤤
Made the mistake of watching this in an airport. Now I’m starving for some Mexican food!
omg they are making my mouth water even without being stuffed......
Man they genuinely put in so much effort into every single part of this it’s a Beautiful thing they Bring Huge Amounts of Respect to their Heritage & Traditions they Should all be Extremely Proud!!!!!! Big Love from NZ 💯🖤🇳🇿🤙
I live on the other side of the planet from this factory. I wish we had more Mexican food in my country !!
me too
Be the dream...
start your own mexican food business.
very professional operation. impressive how they appear to keep the quality up
All of their stuff is excellent!
such an honest and candid guy ...
I have had these corn tortillas and I made some carnitas and these corn tortillas are very good. You can tell a difference when they make a good tortilla.
It is so nice to see well used buckets, transfer jug, and other cooking utensils.
This is including the non working cooling fan.
Much better than a false show with brand new items, just for recording day/s.
Great job guys.
👍😎👍🇬🇧 m-E-m
Those buckets are not food grade
Tacombi is one of my favorite NY taqueria chains. It's very good fast casual Mexican food!
This is my favorite brand of flour tortillas. I have a feeling I’m not alone cause they’re always so hard to find.
good man i wouldn't want any hair in my tortillas
hahahaha
“Yeah, you can never get tired of a tortilla!” 😂👌💯🇲🇽
Nothing better than homemade tortillas 🇲🇽🤘🏽
the smell is great
This looks so good! I need to visit.
Felicidades, hacen una excelente tortilla
It's easy to forget, or be ignorant to the fact, that behind every quality product you buy...there is a mastermind (such as this guy) behind it.
What I especially admire, is when these people are not doing the day to day manual labor anymore, but they can still get in there and do it just as well as anyone else.
@@TheOriginalArchie El no invento nada, xD solo lo agrando y lo llevo a USA, pero todo eso ya estaba en México desde hace mucho. Quizá lo habrá mejorado un poco, pero no invento ni las maquinas ni el proceso.
So good to see people who care about the food they make, that gets eaten by other people.
Nothing will ever be compared to a delicious handmade tortilla. 😌
True innovators.
Eater videos are always on point! Keep it up
Badass. I love fresh warm corn tortillas yumm
😢😢😢. Just good thanks guys for this awesome video about tortillas
Some Tortilla Factory!! Great.
I’m happy that this white guy is literally doing his best pronouncing everything right and for that he is invited to the carnitas (he brings the tortillas)
Bro that’s wild, I remember growing up in queens in the mid 90s, my parents would say that the banderita or whatever gross bagged tortillas you had was a recent thing then. My dad and uncles would say after they came to NY in the late 80s that no one was making them and one of my uncles ended up moving back BECAUSE he wanted his tortillas and got fed up with white bread from the bag. I remember hating eating the generic brand too cause they were always small, constantly somehow damp, had a weird taste AND they tear easily leaving a f***’n mess all over. It wasn’t till they started making local tortillerias started popping up here in the south where I live now like maybe 6 or 7 years ago that I actually started enjoying my own ppl’s food again. I haven’t been back back in NY in years too and NOW we got proper factories that know what they are doing! F*** yeah! Lol I might just move back
these videos are awesome
I could almost SMELL the deliciousness through the screen.
ngl that flour tortilla mix sounds gooood
The Aztec didn't have lime, and the old way was to use wood ash. It does the same thing, and can still be done that way, nearly identical process from 1000's of years ago.
These are perfect tortillas, rigt in New York, the real ones. Thats great!
Man, I'm hungry now. These guys and gals are doing it right.
This reminds me catching tortillas right after were made from my mom in the fogon. Man I really miss that.
If I were young again, I think it would be a fun job to manage a tortilla making company like that one.
Ah yes, tortillas just like my Abuelita's head of innovation used to make.
Looks so delicious please send some to South Africa 😜
Love seeing food factories. They all seem the same but different processes in making there products.
:09 You guys playing that footage in the right direction? Either way, I want me some tacos right now...
Buen ojo, hermano! 😁👍🏻
Lol nice catch!!
@@souglas Taco recycling?
In México most of the tortillas are made using this exact process.
La Finca in Oakland California has a similar setup to this. Great place !
I love La Finca tortillas. Legit
They cooking hard!
Interesting they use pots on a stove instead of a steam jacketed kettle. Would be a lot safer and easier.
Great it's 10:07 PM PST and I am hungry for tacos!
Eater thank you for producing the best videos on youtube. Y'all should come spend a 24 hour shift in the BBQ restaurant in Johnson City, Tn with us! Bet y'all could make an awesome video about it!
AWESOME CONTENT
Cant wait for $1 taco tuesday!
As a Mexican thanks for respecting our roots and traditions and second ...bring them out to Southeast Texas
Espetacular
Love Mexican food, quesadillas are my favorite.
i like menudo...i just dont eat the tripe ..
Menudo don't have tripe!
In Chicago we have tortillas el milagro, great tortillas 😋
Damnit, I'm starving and tortilla is my favorite .. I'm wanting some!!
Los tres potrllos here in Phoenix Oregon makes their own tortillas 🇲🇽🔥
wow so delicious!!
Great video
Thanks Danny Meyer!
Now I need a taco
Felicidades, Una Gran Empresa, Con Un Producto De Calidad. Mi Abuela Me Enseño A Hacer Tortillas A Mano, Las Tortillas Son Amor Para Defender El Mundo.👍💓👏🌮🌯💖🗺️
I would crush some major burritos with those flour tortillas. Tacos for the corn.
Memories of having to do all this by hand as a kid from shucking the corn to grinding it on the metate and then flatting them onto the comal 😂
omg made it halfway before i realized it was for Tacombi
I wish I could get some here in LA :(
I be looking for them. I like thier ingredients.
5:35 answered my question
Best tortillas i ever tasted were at Bakersfield at the Vallarta market ......
😂😂😂 “We’re not adding anything to our tortillas. It’s corn and water............................and some sodium hydroxate”
And that makes the tortilla more nutritious, it adds calcium
Calcium hydroxide and the nixtamalization process (exactly as shown in this video) is thousands of years old.
Where can i buy this tortilla printer?
Been doing this at home for a a little over 1000 years
Cane's uses that same tub they use for calcium hydroxide. Except we use it for flour and sugar
I'm just imagining that there's a huge met lab under that factory, too much breaking bad is bad 😂
wow. yummy
I own a tortilla factory and can’t wait untill I get my counter stacker
Do you get a great masa from your masa stones? If not, I can help you with that!
nice real nice
I would trust more in the recipe of this guy than the one that are using in the tortillerias of Mexico. Currently we are suffering from tortilla pirata that is made from old remains of tortilla :(
I haven’t seen this brand of tortillas here in queens NY to look for it .to make the tacos at the restaurant where I work
The best tortilla is made with yellow corn which is more popular in south of Mexico. 🇲🇽
horsepower, centimeters. well done
It’s corn!
Calcium hydroxide is/was a calcium source for indigenous peoples, and helps avoid some deseases related to a low mineral diet.
Damn. I'm hungry now
I LOVEEEEE these tortillas but you have to eat them QUICK! They’re so fresh that they get moldy in about 3/4 days
Hermosa if you’re reading this, I’d rather eat quick / toss a couple away instead of you changing the ingredients or adding preservatives
The machine bakes the tortilla on three sides? Is the third side the rim of the tortilla?
I could go for a torta right about now beans steak and veggies plus sour cream and cheese
