I worked on this ship back in 1981 as a waiter then as a cabin steward. I enjoyed working on this ship while it was cruising around the islands. I met a lot of nice people too. The only thing that I didn’t like was if you wanted to take days off, you had to get off the ship and sign up again if you wanted to come back to work….Back in the day…Another lifetime ago.

Sailed on her in the early 2000’s, she wasn’t the great ocean liner she had been in the fifties, but she wAS beautiful and What a GREat wAY to VISit the islands. At dinner We sat near one of the engineering officers and learned that she had very fast and powerful engines capable of a lot of speed. She was built to US Navy specifications to be used as a transport fast enough to escape submarines. Unfortunately submarines got faster and the world changed so her intended military use fell out of favor. She and sister ship the Constitution were built for the southern route to the Mediterranean. The movie “An Affair To Remember” was filmed on the Constitution. It was the feature movie on the Independence while cruising the Islands.

I worked for American Hawaii cruises from 1998 to 2001. Married my wife camille on board by the captain while we were sailing in front on the kuai coast on Sept 17 2000. Fond memories of this beautiful ship.

I was only on her for a one week cruise as an AB. She was deteriorating. Me and the chief mates did not get along. Sad to see the final picture in India.

Sailed on the Indy 1984, 88-94, 96. AB/Bos'n Mate/Bos'n. Good times indeed and sad to see her as she is, but atleast the stubborn old gal didn't end up razor blades or sunk for insurance like her sister.

I helped them put together a ship service turbine generator in about 1983 when I worked for GE Marine Department. The passenger side was clean and modern. But open that doorway behind the theater and enter the engine spaces and it was in terrible shape with machinery broken, apart, waiting on parts no longer made. One big AC unit was out of service and the other broke in Kauai Harbor. I knew something about resistors and patched together enough with big jumper cables to get the unit started again. The Chief Engineer was a grumpy old cuss. His favorite communication to oilers and wipers he didn't like was ''Pack your fu%%ing rags. YOU'RE OUTTA HERE!''. One morning there was a stench throughout the ship when the sewage backed up. Some guys in the aft starboard bilge removed a flange on a 12'' pipe and got blasted with a flood of the most vile sickening brown rotted shit water. Everybody puked including me. Did you ever hear about that? I always enjoyed my time on that ship.

So glad i found this!!! I sailed on this magnificent ship September 2000. I was 15 and my grandparents brought me with them. I met a girl named Danielle on the walk around railing that went along one of the top decks on the S.S. Independence. We were inseparable and made many lasting memories being in puppy love. We probably made the crew nuts with riding the elevators, sitting in the stair wells, eating all the soft serve ice cream with mounds of toppings! We ate so much from that machine that was located by the pool near the stern..it was out of order for a day..lol. Found out i didn't care for escargot while aboard, watched Big Mommas house over and over in the theater located on one of the lowers decks. While aboard I met a server named Wade Dobbs who was probably in his mid 20's who took me under his wing and helped me with my nerves about Danielle..lol. I remember him because on lobster night he signed my lobster bib. Had that thing forever but alas..lost to time! This ship provided one of the greatest summers of my young life!!! I was sad to see the photos of her in salvage with the stern tearing off..the deck with the hanging speakers where I had so many wonderful memories made in utter disrepair..the walk around where I met my youthful fling now collecting rust. I am now 35 and am glad this video exists, as she lives on in my memories as the glorious S.S. Independence, where every now and then, in my dreams, we still sail.

I was a bartender on the Indy from 2000-2001. I know so many people in this video, it was nice to relive the memories of the great SS Independence.

This brought tears of sadness and joy to my eyes. We had so much fun for such a short time and we have great memories for a lifetime. Thanks Pomaiki'i Brown for producing this great movie of our times together in Hawaii on this magnificant steam ship from the 50's. .

Thank you for posting this. I wish more people would do so. I was only 16 in 86 on this ship and even though I have a bunch of pictures, I have no video.
