Because...the notions of Islam are SO different than what existed here in this country 200 years ago, which they called ‘slavery’, that it is an *insult* to Islamic ‘Riqq’ to call it what was happening over here 200 years ago.”

22:40 Meaning of the word “Syed”: The word “Syed” means a person of respect, an undisputed leader, one who would be obeyed, the one in authority. It is mostly in Indo-Pak culture that the word Syed is misused or mistranslated to mean a “direct descendent of the prophet ﷺ”.

I had not heard of the custom of non Jewish Medini women giving their children over to be taught and raised in the Jewish faith and then sought to force them to convert to Islam when they later converted to Islam. This gives more insight as well as the supplies historical context behind the Quranic revelation against forcing adult children into converting onto Islam.

    Episode 54 Notes:
    The Expedition of Al Muraysi
In 5AH, the Prophet SAW received intelligence that the tribe of Banu Mustaliq is planning to launch a surprise attack on Medina. Furthermore, the Banu Mustaliq had helped the Quraysh in their attack on Medina during the Battle of Uhud. The primary reason for this was because, the Qurayshi caravans not going to Syria each year, hurt the pockets of the Banu Mustaliq too. This is because they were situated right between Makkah and Medina. Thus they wanted to the Muslims out of the way in order to open up the trade highway again.
When the Prophet SAW heard of rumours of their aim to launch a surprise attack, he sent one Sahabi RA to verify this intelligence. The Sahabi RA confirmed this and then the Prophet SAW gathered an army of 700 Muslims in order to invade the Banu Mustaliq first. This was supposed to be a very easy mission and thus even the Munafiqs joined this campaign. The Prophet SAW attacked the Banu Mustaliq just after Fajar and this caught them completely off guard. There was little fighting and 10 of the Banu Mustaliq were killed. The rest of the tribe and it resources were taken back to Medina, by the Muslims as spoils of war.
    The Journey Back to Medina
On the journey back to Medina, two young boys, an Ansari and a Muhajir got into an altercation and called their own people to defend them. This caused the Ansar to back the Ansari and the Muhajirun to back the Muhajir. Leading to tempers flaring amongst the adult Sahabah RA. A fight occurring between the two groups was increasing. But, the Prophet SAW heard the commotion and told them to leave this Jaahiliyah behind them as it is rotten. This is because the Sahabah RA had divided on the lines of Muhajirun and Ansari. When Abdullah Ibn Salul heard that, the Sahabah RA, had stopped arguing and that, they wouldn’t fight one another. He became enraged and chastised his fellow hypocrites within his private tent for allowing the Prophet SAW to come to Medina. Abdullah Ibn Salul also insulted the Prophet SAW and the Muhajirun in front of the hypocrites.
But, not all of the people present were munafiqs. Zaid Ibn Arqam RA heard what was said and immediately told the Prophet SAW who called Abdullah Ibn Salul to explain himself. Abdullah Ibn Salul begun taking oath after oath that he never said what Zaid RA heard him say. Thus the Prophet SAW let Abdullah Ibn Salul leave and then ordered the Sahabah RA march back to Medina without rest. The Muslims reached the outskirts of Medina and rested. It was here that Surah Munafiqun was revealed and this completely exposed the hidden traitors that lurked amongst the Muslims. The Muslims then entered Medina.
Fun Trivia fact: There were actually 5 Caliphs of the Rashidun Caliphate. Hassan RA is the 5th one and ruled for 6 months before abdicating the position to Muawiyah RA of the Umayyad Dynasty. This is because the people of Medina gave Hassan RA Bayyah.
Fun Trivia fact: The first time there were two Khalifah’s at the same time was during the time of Hassan RA and Muawiyah RA.
Fun Trivia fact: Islamic “slavery” is very different to western slavery. This is because Islam highly encourages the release of slaves, to the extent that so many Fiqh rulings involve freeing slaves.
Fun Trivia fact: In Islamic law, a slave can buy their freedom after being captured.
Fun Trivia fact: The Prophet SAW stated that, “whoever captures a free man and enslaves them, will attain the curse of Allah SWT”.
Fun Trivia fact: The Mamluks are the most famous of the slave dynasty’s. Its because freeing slaves in Islam, was so encouraged, that the Mamluks became who they were.
Fun Trivia fact: In Islam, a child born from a slave occupies the same status, as that of a child from a full marriage.
Fun Trivia fact: The majority of the Caliphs of the Abbasid Caliphate, were from slave women.
Fun Trivia fact: When the Prophet SAW let Abdullah Ibn Salul go and accepted his oaths. Umar RA asked the Prophet SAW if he could just kill Abdullah ibn Salul since he saw through Abdullah Ibn Saul’s hypocrisy. But, the Prophet SAW forbade him from doing so, because he did not want people to say that, the Prophet SAW kills his own companions.
Fun Trivia fact: After Allah SWT revealed Surah Munafiqun, the Prophet SAW grabbed Zain Ibn Arqam RA’s ears and told him that, his ears had heard the truth.
Fun Trivia fact: Abdullah Ibn Salul had a son called Abdullah who, unlike his father, was a Muslim and was very loyal to the Prophet SAW.
Fun Trivia fact: Abdullah the son of Abdullah Ibn Salul, actually volunteered to kill his own father, after he had heard what his father had done. But, the Prophet SAW told Abdullah to be good to his father and that, his father shall not be killed so long as he lives amongst the Muslims.
Fun Trivia fact: The Prophet SAW actually prayed Janazah and lowered the coffin for Abdullah Ibn Salul. However, it was at the time of Abdullah Ibn Saul’s death that, Allah SWT clearly stated that, never pray for Munafiqs or do Janazah for them or visit their graves and that, they will never be forgiven.
Fun Trivia fact: It was after the revelation of Surah Munafiqun, that a lot of Munafiqs embraced Islam properly. This was also when the Prophet SAW showed Umar RA his wisdom, for not allowing Umar RA to kill Abdullah Ibn Salul earlier.

Disclaimer for my Notes of Sheikh Yasir Qadhi’s Seerah of the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam Series:
Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh, these are my notes on Sheikh Yasir Qadhi’s Seerah series.
Please note: I HIGHLY recommend that you all watch YQ’s Seerah series, as I DON’T cover every single detail the Sheikh mentions. I made these notes primarily for myself but, decided my fellow brothers and sisters may benefit from them too. I no doubt will have made mistakes in my notes. All the good in these notes is from Allah SWT and all the mistakes are from myself. But, I was very meticulous and tried my best to make sure everything is accurate as the Sheikh mentions it.
You also will see I have added “Fun Trivia facts” under each of my notes. These FTFs are information YQ said that was off topic or not necessary to include in my notes for the episode. But, they were still worth mentioning hence the inclusion as FTFs. FTFs aren’t always HAPPY pieces of information. Sometimes they are very sad trivia. I just want to say that FTF is the phrase I used for them all collectively when making the notes.
One thing I wanted to do but am too lazy to do is, maybe someone could take the FTFs from under each “Episode” and make an Islamic reminder/information IG/TikTok account and post them daily or something. Could be a great form of Sadaqah Jaariyah.
Please keep me in your Duas and ask Allah SWT to forgive all our sins during this blessed month and beyond! Ameen

Expedition of Al-Muraysi’- Happened at Al-Muraysi’) (5 AH shuban)- Banu Mustaliq was a tribe that had alliance with Abdul Muttalib so they sided with Quraysh during Uhud, wanted to surprise attack Medina, also since Muslims were blocking caravan trade route. Muhammad saw sent Buraydah ibn Al-Ḥasīb to spy on their chief and confirm rumor that if Banu was actually gonna attack, chief confirmed it. So 700 Muslims surprise attacked the tribe and many POWS were taken, Hypeocates like Ibn Sulul also participated since it was very easy win. only 1 Muslim casualty in friendly fire, an Ansari killed Hisham Ibn Subaba, his pagan brother who was in brother Named Miqyas bin Subaba came to Medina acting as Muslim demanded blood money of 100 camels and it was given. On same night, he murdered the Ansari who killed his brother then fled to Mecca. He was one of the 6 in fathe Mecca who was ordered to be killed and was killed. After Muhammad saw married Juwairiyah, the chief Al Harith bin abi dirar came back for his daughter, Muhammad saw gave her option to leave or stay; she chose to stay. Al Harith was so moved by this he accepted Islam and his whole tribe then converted. All sheep’s camels and all POWS were freed and status quo was back, only thing that changed was that Banu Mustalaq was now Muslim.
Juwairiyah bint al Harith- she was daughter of chief of Banu Mustalaq after expedition of Al Muraysi’, she was taken as captive, she wanted to purchase her freedom, so she Went to Muhammad saw for request for Loan so she can be free, Muhammad saw offered her marriage for her freedom. She was 18 years ol and was known for her beauty, when Aisha saw her for first time she hated her because she knew Muhammad saw would see beauty in her. Juwairiyah was charitable and women who would fast “Hadith about her doing dhikr from Fajr to noon” (whole tribe converted after)
