Answer: That's very cool.
Most of the people on youtube are fat old white dudes living with their moms in the middle of amercia, so anything to do with machining/metal working will speak to them. You should keep pumping this stuff out.
Ice cold, baby!
correct
I said that exactly xd
😄ahh, I'm six days too late with this joke🙃
Very cool! I'm sure this has endless scientific uses but also I bet some 40k nerds would paint some SICK minis with this level of detail.
Please make a video about this
Good for microscopy, where you would need to easily see more angles of the object that you're analyzing without moving it to much.
I'm sure there are 40k nerds looking for 3d printable files for spherical manipulators as we speak.
Your comment is probably why this video is in my recommendations

I don't paint miniatures (ie this is an educated guess on my part) but I agree, I have a cheap knock-off ball vise and I think they'd be better for painting miniatures... but the swirly arms are cool 😅
I was designing something like this for a and internship I had. I was tasked to count and measure features on ants for my entamologist professor who was reclassifying a genus. The graduate students kinda laughed at my idea. They didn't think it was necessary. The lab ended and I forgot about it. Your design is much better and more elegant then my cardboard and wire design lol. kudos
Your design may have been quick and dirty, this design is very involved. Your design may have been cheep and not involve a 3d printer. You may have backed away from making the new standard way to examine samples in your class. Don't let people who have no vision or who are lazy keep you from exploring , testing, trying. If you had tried and failed what would you be out? A few hours? You can learn a lot from trying.
What was it? A machine for ants?
Relates… a lot of people generally think stuff like this is unnecessary. Worked with researchers before and you’d be surprised how lazy they are with the “the old method worked fine so why bother improvement.” I wish you the best
@Brown_Potato seems so strange. The whole point of research is to find new cool things, and they are too afraid to try something new
@@TheWeen344 They perceive it as "I gotta do more work" when they fail to realise they are not capable of thinking of ways to do more work efficiently. Divergent thinking generally happens when there is a vacuum of new methods, combined with the frustration of doing a mind-numbing method again and again based on "feel".

Hah, your design is one of the three I pulled inspiration from when designing this, thanks for your well documented work :)
My design is based on what bearings etc I had around (eg the base is a chunk of 30mm shaft with three giant 30mm bearings press fit on it... Massive overkill but they were on the shelf) and with the altered design intent of it being manipulated by hand.

I'm not a genius, but ponder physical activity and its relationship with other moving parts. This is highly intriguing to me! Honestly amazing!
I'd like to see the math behind this thing, looks like a complex piece of engineering.
@@shadesilverwing0 as somone who has designed one, its surprisingly intuitive. You just need to make every single axis of every single screw/axle converge on that central focal point. And make the linkages the right shape so they dont bang into each other. Think of it as 3 nested spheres, centered on that focal point, and it makes a lot more sense. The linkages all slide in relation to the spherical curvature they are then bound to.
Correct! I saw one somewhere and thought it would be cool, overthought it a bunch, then figured out (after seeing this vid from @swannschilling474 czcams.com/video/vNV2LetkfEg/video.html) the trick - the axis of every bearing points to the same point.
As for banging into each other...well it was a quick and lazy design and the arms did interfere... so I heat gunned them until they didn't (while fully assembled, elastic averaging kept it accurate despite the manual mangling). Check out the update vid for more on that czcams.com/video/wN02itp6-z4/video.html
Best thing I've seen in a long bit. Solid work!

I thought this was going to be just like some kind of turbo encabulator but it is actually really cool and useful.
I could also see this being very gently powered up and making a super cool desk toy.
A combination of this with the double swing arm chaotic device which would make a beautiful desk toy that swings and pivots unpredictably on the underside while that top point constantly centres on a single position in space.
Definitely check out @swannschilling474 for a computer controlled one, their videos were the inspiration for my thingy
...and it stays within focal distance! Excellent!
Cheers :) It works better than I thought it would too (the focus etc doesn't need adjusting or anything), given how imprecise some of it is (eg the bearing seats having fdm artefacts that needed cleaning up by hand) - likely due to 'elastic averaging' ie everything bending just a little to accommodate each other and the average of all that approaches the design intent.
I posted an update vid ( czcams.com/video/wN02itp6-z4/video.html ) where I show some of the serious flaws in the design (ie I heat-gunned the arms to flatten the bottoms so they didn't interfere) and it's still accurate despite that manual mangling - elastic averaging is a great tool to have in your maker-kit

Wow…you blew my mind…like really you make it sound so simple! Amazing!

Amazing!! So impressive! Not to mention absolutely mesmerizing to watch in action! ❤
This is so cool but I genuinely can't tell why it feels so cool.
it looks like some sort of lazer beam shooter? Pedistal for something fancy? Holder for a magical orb at the end of a staff? The thing turns interestingly? The commonplace design of supporting things from the bottom making the showcase of supporting something from anywhere else, especially when maneuvering from spherical bases like this one, look like the held object is somewhat floating, or cradled in a weird way?

Yes, share or sell the CAD files. I'd be willing to pay money for these.
Alternatively, @makebreakrepair should attach their name to the 3D files via a CC-BY or AGPL licence and then make the data available to a wide variety of potential users, makers and creators. There is a good chance that after a while a large institution will offer them a well-paid consultancy contract or some other form of business relationship. Think of Linus Torvalds.
Same. This model is sweet and simple, and it will be much appreciated to have the plans and where to source the bearings/bushings that fit it.
damn i guess youtube keeps deleting my comments because of the URL links? Idk. I hope im not spamming you guys. But I made one of these after watching this video two days ago. Its not as good as this guys but it works and Id love some feedback. It will probably work great for entomology its just not as heavy duty as this one.
