Caro Quintero English and Political Science with a focus in Peace Studies and International Studies. I worked as a receptionist to a law firm, and administrative assistant to an advertising company, and as a waitress, all while taking 21 credit hours. If you’re trying to undercut my work ethic, you’ll be sorely disappointed. But this isn’t just about me. There is a large amount of people in my age group who were claimed as dependents (when they actually aren’t!) by relatives, who are not getting any aid during a time where this same group of people, also are struggling under crippling debt with extremely limited measures of help from universities!

To be honest, the most important issue that we international students face is the expensive fees charged for the semester and receiving 0 compensation. I feel nobody is talking about this. You've got rent to pay, food is running out, Uni has charged a lot only to give online classes. It is fucked up.

Over spring break, they told everyone staying on campus that they had less than 48 hours before they would be locked out of their dorms. We had nowhere to go. They said there would be an application we could fill out to stay on campus for the remainder of spring break if we were already here. And that application never came out- no explanation. The deadline came and went and we were kicked out of our homes, the housing we had already paid for months in advance.

The whole year for me was shitty, I was seprated from my friends and I lost motivation. I gained 10 kgs and now I have such an unhealthy lifestyle. And at end of the year we had to give our exams offline in which I just shitted. My grades dropped from A to a C. Now I'm stressed. I just keep crying and stressing. I hate covid. I hate to stay at my house because my parents are so toxic and just keep on fighting. I’m 18, this is my second semester of college, and my grades are plummeting like never before in my entire life. It’s not because I’m not trying as hard as I can, it’s because there’s a good reason I don’t take online classes. I’m not good with computers at all, I need an actual present teacher to help me. but now I’m stuck in a situation where these are my first ever online classes, I’m not prepared at all and I don’t want my grades to reflect something that’s so out of my control. I’m working at the UPS World Airport so I’m constantly stressed about bringing this virus home to my family and my terrible grades. I got back onto campus after spring break on March 9. Everything escalated insanely fast, and we got told on the 12th that we would be moving online until at least the 27th. Dorms were closing the following Monday, and the dining hall was closing after dinner the Friday before. Less than a week later, we got word that we would be online for the rest of the semester.
We are using Zoom to keep in touch with friends and family members, Big Blue Button is how we're having live classes. My anatomy lab is up in the air, as is my music class. It is genuinely hard to deal with, because everything that we had is suddenly gone.
We don't know what will happen with all the events that were planned for service hours, we don't know when we will be able to come back to campus and move out the rest of our things, health science students don't know if we will be able to come back for summer classes or if we will be able to complete our clinical rotations. There are just so many unknowns and that's the hardest part.

If your feeling sad try to go outside if your allowed to and plan something to look forward to like baking a cake. You can also set up goals and when you reached them you receive a reward. For example I get to watch an tv serie by the end of the work day. This works for me and I have Adhd. This is just a tip and I can only write from my own perceptive. This is what me and my mentor have been talking about. I don't know if you can have access to a mentor at your university. Try to look it up and if you can I strongly recommend it.

It's such a pity that you can't even see your family in person because of the risk of infection. Students studying abroad are also threatened with their homes. We have no choice but to pray together so that this serious situation can be calmed down as soon as possible. Make sure to use a mask, and you shouldn't go to places where many people gather. Don't lose hope, let's wait.

Figured I'd post about my experiences here in Canada. First off, its so odd. I am in my second last year of engineering and its dawning on me that a coop position for the summer will be near impossible to obtain for the summer. School work and presentations in the final weeks have all moved online and in power point form. It is quite unfortunate that so many great events have been postponed or canceled, including the graduation ceremony for many of my peers who are finishing this year. There are no pats on the back or celebration, it just kind of drifted off into everyone trying to stay focused and get work done at home.
Personally, I am coping really well with it by drawing and playing video games with friends, but its just the beginning and I can understand how scary it is for others - especially those that are much more financially burdened than I am. I personally am a little worried as I have asthma, but I am healthy so it hasn't made me too anxious.
All in all, this was the last thing I expected for this year of school. Wild stuff to say the least.
    Stay safe, stay indoors.

@ARTOFMUSIC I mean, I feel like it isn't going to end the world or career for anyone. I just think people thrown into the work force right away are gong to have a brutal time for the first few years. At the end of the day, ill still be able to get my degree and graduate, and when the dust settles and the stocks go back, and vaccines have been given out, economy will be booming yet again - hopefully this time with more trust in the scientists that warn us what is to come.
Although this pandemic will kill and is killing a relatively large number of people, I think most people will be fine in the end as long as self isolation is continued. Sure a lot of money will be lost but a crash was imminent with how fast the economy has been growing over the years.
All in all life has a clever way of working stuff out.

My very first year of college was during the pandemic and it was a mess from the start. My first semester had very few classmates attending in-person, but there were some that still attended and most of my professors were doing classes in-person. My second semester was utter hell because not only was I the only student attending in-person, but most of my professors gave up on teaching in-person, communicating with my classmates was almost nonexistent, and I would spend most of my time alone working in a quiet room with no one to talk to.

Because of the COVID-19 situation, many situations became difficult. I especially agree with Pooja and Emma. Many college students, especially freshmen, would have looked forward to college life, but they couldn't go out and even classes were non-face-to-face classes. In addition, the educational environment is important for young children, but it is regrettable that they will lose concentration and have some difficulty in friendship if classes are conducted in a non-face-to-face-to-face.

    My experience goes as follows:
I have received significant compensation from my university for the COVID pandemic, though it didn't help much for me actually learning any material. I'm an engineering major and this is the third (and hopefully final) semester I have spent online, I can say lots of content has been cut from my courses. This in turn creates a snowball effect where then I do poorly in future classes simply because I have to catch up on previous material that was dropped in previous classes. I miss the in-person classes because that is where I get a lot of hands-on experience, whereas now most of my lectures are just PDF documents and prerecorded videos. In turn, I have almost no motivation to engage in my work (especially general education courses like calculus, english, etc...) and my grades suffer. It doesn't help that my work hours have basically doubled (36hrs/wk as of right now) since COVID started which leaves me almost no time to do homework or keep up with classes. I went from straight A's in college to this semester where I'm struggling to even pass my classes. I know I'm not the only one, in the majority of my classes I can see averages, highs, and lows, and I watch averages on exams, quizzes, etc... get lower and lower with time. My university plans to go back to full in-person in the fall, and I cannot wait to get everything back on track.

The most regrettable thing is that I don't have any memories of my university due to the coronavirus pandemic.
There are many problems caused by COVID-19, but it is sad that we cannot do what we can enjoy at that time.
As people said in the video, all of the time spent with my family and studying abroad disappeared due to COVID-19.
And now I have a lot of regrets that I can't see my colleagues and professors face to face while taking online classes. The contents of the class may be similar, but I feel that my concentration is very low.
So I want to go to school as soon as possible, enjoy my college life, and take classes in person.

  • @hartzaire
    @hartzaire Před 4 lety +1

I can definitely relate I do agree that it lessened the education. I myself have been going to school in person longer then online. I have cerebral palsy and a learning disability. And I’m 25 and I’ve gone to school live in the flesh for 25 years longer then on zoom. I got okay grades and didn’t fail. But I hope school doesn’t get stupidly petty and start going after students about their grades during this pandemic because that would be so unfair to the millions of students who are use to going in person and do better in person than online. And that would be unfair to the millions of students who still tried their best to spite the new unexpected school and homework set up. And the school needs to do better for international students as well. After this is over schools should really examine their ways of treating students and education.

My uni has confirmed moving in for September but if there is another outbreak across the UK, students will not be allowed to stay on site unless they are international students - I am so scared that she will contract it from me and die, leaving my two disabled brothers with no primary care, that if there is another UK-wide outbreak, there are already arrangements in place for my girlfriend's dad to pick me up from university and I go to stay with them in her city, 5 hours away from University and an hour from my parents, until I move back to university, to protect my family.

I wound up moving out with harassment and death threats as well as seeing what covid did to society. I wound up getting an incomplete and having mental breakdowns homeless and relying on a food meal plan pad for by family. finally managed to get home after multiple threats, break downs, and depression and ptsd issues. we are ALL AFFECTED. my family didn't even want me home because i was exposed. i am doing everything i can to not get them sick. I was at my absolute lowest! If i can get through what i went through then SO CAN YOU. GET UP AND DEAL WITH AN ARROW IN YOUR CHEST AND MOVE FORWARD. I have my feet in the academy of my dreams and yet I have nothing else: the pandemic ruined my first year of medicine. It demolished my social life by confining me to my apartment. It took away my friend's grandparents one after the other in such a way that it was brutal and seemed more like dark humor but wasn't, it did happen. I cannot leave my house without a daily permit because the city is a red zone. As a consequence I haven't had proper food in days and am probably losing a lot of weight because of it. We have online exams (what is that?) for hardcore science classes that were traditionally held in presence. Everyone is panicking, even professors are losing their minds and you can tell by their voices that this is the case (a professor's family member died recently, she still was expected to go and take classes but she is obviously distressed and in pain). This whole experience has definitely traumatized me, and I don't think my career will never quite heal from the impact of this trauma.
