- Roller Derby game , the "Challenge Cup" between the Eastern Experss and the Midwest Pioneers. This game was played on December 12, 1987 and shown on TV over the Madison Square Garden Network (MSG). This is not a full game, but Includes parts of the 2nd period through the final period. I may be wrong, but I believe it was the last game skated by the IRSL/Rollermania.The game features Joan Weston, Bill Groll, Phil Moore, Dolores Holmes, Diane Syverson, Jerry Cattell, Sherry Erich, James Paul, Joe Gilbert, Jimmy Smith, Frank Macedo, Jo Jo Stafford, and Wilma Ryan. The infield coach is Nick Scopas.The announcers are the great Dave Eddy, Bill Hill and myself, the not-so-great Tom Chasuk who is forever grateful to David Lipschultz for the opportunity. I just read on the Internet that Dave Eddy died February 13, 2022. He was a terrific announcer and a very nice man. My condolences to his family.
I remember when James Paul was a rookie starting out on the SF Bay Bombers and was happy to see his progress through the IRSL years with him leading his own teams. When the prior IRDL was in existence, I always wished that he was on "my" Midwest Pioneers. A very talented skater and exciting to watch.
Thanks so much for sharing your story. I also watched him when he was a rookie on the Bombers. He was a terrific skater. I met him at Joan Weston’s training center in Hayward years later. He was not only a great skater, but a very good guy. 😀

Saw my first Roller Derby game on TV in 1958. Was sorry to see it deteriorate to the level of pro wrestling with manufactured story lines. Thanks for the video, Tom.

They allowed Joan Weston and Bill Groll from the Bay Bombers to skate with the Eastern Express. Also, they added Diane Syverson and Sean Atkinson, from the Southern Stars, to the Midwest Pioneers lineup.

You're speaking of Bill Hill! He was a lot of fun to work with as was Dave Eddy. He was also very supportive and gave me some good advice which I appreciated as it was my first time.
A very AVERAGE skater who the derby desperately tried to get over as a heel. One of the worst. No charisma, no character--basically all hat and no cowboy.

I never saw this footage.... Never saw Groll or Weston skate for the Xpress. Very cool indeed. The only thing is the game skipped around... I didn't like that. Seems like we missed stuff.
