    I just came back from the Philippines and honestly I think every Filipino American should go back at least once in their lives if they can. This was my fourth trip and it's good to be reminded of your heritage, especially if you're like me and aren't in a very Filipino community or don't speak any Filipino language. You learn a lot over there. It's truly an experience. Just brace yourselves for cold baths.

    Fun fact: Filipinos are actually the oldest group of Asian Americans. A group of Filipino sailors settled in Louisiana in the 1760s, in a settlement called St. Malo. They were called Manilamen!

    When I was younger I used to ask my mom why so many filipinos are good singers and she always answered: It's because they always sing. When they're bored they sing, when they're sad they sing, when they're hungry and they have no money to buy food and at every party they sing karaoke.
    Thought I would share this because.. i don't know 😂

    He's spreading incorrect facts about the Philippines. Firstly China never colonized Philippines. He also claimed that the Filipinos were all Aetas before they were mixed with Spaniards, Chinese, etc, which is false. The Aetas are Australo-Melanesians, like the Aborigines in Australia. They are believed to be the earliest inhabitants of the Philippines, but became a minority after the Austronesian migration. The Filipinos share a common history with other countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia as their languages are in the same family. I really wished Filipinos would be more interested in their history.

    • @minim6981
      @minim6981 Před 9 lety +3

      Not just Indonesia and Malaysia but also the countries of Micronesia. They share a similar history from being Austronesians and also colonized by Spain and then the US. A lot of people forget that because Micronesians are considered Pacific Islanders. That doesnt mean we're not related to them.

    Many Filipinos have misplaced nationalism!
    To me, that PInoy Pride thinking is a bunch of bs! Especially to those who use it in a wrong way.
    Many Filipino-Americans who say they have Pinoy Pride but looks down on Filipinos from the homeland like calling them fresh off the boat.
    Dissing the culture and people they are claiming pride in!

    I am Filipino. And I noticed that we are a really proud race. And because of that, sometimes we do not know how to react to criticism. Usually when there is a video that says something negative about our culture, we are quick to get mad and flame the comment box.
    There is a famous trend going on, it's called #butthurtphilippies or #butthurtpinoy . And I just really wish it would stop. I am born and raised in the Philippines, but if someone doesn't have the same opinion as I do, I don't care.

      @unknowndeoxys00 Před 10 lety +10

      That's really one of the most non-redeeming characteristics about our culture, the pridefulness, and it upsets me as well. There is a fine line between "being proud" and "having pride..." Wish many Filipinos didn't cross it so much. Leads to lots of family and friend altercations...

      Also, I'm an atheist, but I don't judge other beliefs.
      We are now living in a modern society. People can do what they want to do with their lives, that's the beauty of it. You can worship a rock and people should care less about it, it's your life.

    AJ grew up in the States. He's a little misinformed about the history, and don't judge him, he was just trying to remember what he was told.
    Corrections:
    1. China did not colonized Philippines but rather brought their business and engaged with the Filipinos during the pre-colonization. Chinese were also one of the foreigners who brought their culture in the Philippines and later on adapted by the Filipinos.
    2. Filipino vs. Pilipino - Pilipino is the term for "People who are born in / are citizens of the Philippines" (as tagalog term) and Filipino is the term for "People who are born in / are citizens of the Philippines" (as english term), also term for " the discipline / subject which is the study of reading and language of the Philippines" and as a technical term for the "language of the Philippines" (it's not TAGALOG because it is a dialect and there was a history about that)
    3. its P-I-L-I-P-I-N-A-S which was from the original spanish word "Filipinas" given by King Philip II of Spain.

  • @leira777
    @leira777 Před 8 lety +22

    Hey, AJ! The word "Filipino" is not Americanized. It's Spanish in nature. When we were colonized by the Spaniards, our country was called "Filipinas". When we got our independence, we wanted it to sound 'not Spanish' so we changed it to "Pilipinas" thereby changing all with P like Filipino to Pilipino. Americans made us "Philippines". Big FYI!

    AJ, for your information, we Filipinos have actually been here for a very long time. The first Filipino settlers arrived in Louisiana in 1763." They were called Manilmen, who escaped from Spanish brutalities during the galleon trade era off New Orleans, Louisiana, and Acapulco, Mexico. Then a flood of Chinese immigrants came during the early 18th century. www.pbs.org/ancestorsintheamericas/time_06.html

      Manila's chinatown is the oldest in the world. A lot of chinese migrated to south east asia as a matter of fact you can find a lot of them also in Malaysia, Indonesia and of course Singapore. It's only in the Philippines though were they were able to mix the most with the local population. Historically the chinese were big traders with the filipinos, then came the spanish with Magellan. 333 years after Spanish-American war saw the transfer of the rule to Americans. WW2 brought in the Japanese occupation then Americans freed the islands and then came independence.

    I think it's not really fair for people to judge AJ for being "misinformed" because okay so some of his statements were misinformed but understand that in American History classes there's literally like one lesson on the Philippines which is about Marshall law and how the US helped out the PI when it was being invaded by Japan during WWII (if i remember correctly) so it's not entirely his fault if he's not a historian buff about all the facts on the Philippines and the indigenous roots, because we're not taught that in school, we're taught about other Asian cultures and Western civilization and most of the facts he said I thought were true too because that's what I was always taught too by the American education system and my parents.. so I think people really should cut AJ some slack considering he's a musician and not a historian and if people really wanted to know more about the PI history they can just google it...

    Great interview, Fung Bros! The questions were really thought provoking and AJ is very insightful. I was born and raised in the Philippines, moved to NJ in 2007. I agree with a lot of what AJ said about identity and how tough it is to find it, given our history. I'm also really glad that he mentioned and honored one of the original people of the Philippines- the Aetas. Some Filipinos try to detach themselves from their native people, and just like what AJ said, attach to other cultures/people. As far as the word "Pilipino" and "Filipino", you were right on the money when you mentioned the alphabet. Currently, "Filipino" is actually the "correct" spelling. I put correct in quotes coz it's not a big deal but I wanted to provide more information on it. It was changed from Pilipino to Filipino when the official alphabet was changed to the "Modern Filipino Alphabet" in 1987. A lot of the Fil-Ams I've met do not know this because either they moved to the US before the said change, or they were born here so they didn't learn about it in school. Google "Filipino alphabet" or "Filipino orthography" if you want more info. Again, thanks for this Fung Bros! Keep it up!

    He was right on some points but as a FilAm living in the Philippines, you realize a lot more about the country when you really experience the actual culture through living it. You can't really come visit here and suddenly grasp the culture. Living here allowed me to really think about the culture more. Most Filipino American's have no idea what it's really like to be a Filipino these days. Filipino's born outside of the Philippines just have a very easy time adapting to the culture they are presently in which is a double-edged sword. It has it's pros and cons. I suggest some of the Filipino's that were born and raised abroad to come out here and maybe move out here to really experience the life out here. You'll be able to understand yourself better by knowing your origins.

    I'm Filipino, born and raised in the Philippines. I'm 1/8 Spanish from my maternal grandfather's side. I'm not sure about my father's side, but ever since I moved to London I'm sometimes mistaken for being Vietnamese, 'cause of my eyes. My father's side is probably the reason, since the rest of my blood from my mother's side have native Filipino surname.
    I saw being Filipino as something not so special while living in the Philippines, but since living in London, being Filipino is something special. It's something unique being a Filipino straight from the Philippines since most of the Filipinos who grew up here, though embraces being Filipino- being Asian, mostly- they really don't embraces the culture as much. But, surprisingly, half-Filipino friends I have embraces the Filipino culture a lot more than their western side. I think this is the reason why I embrace the Filipino culture a lot more. Though it have a lot of influences from transactions during the pre-Spaniard era, with China, Arabs and Malay, and the centuries of colonisations by Spain, America, Japan and Britain (yes, though only for 2 short years), the culture itself is unique in actually mixing all these influences together along with their own traditions.
    I so hope we can retrieve some of our own pre-colonised culture and somehow reinforces back to our current practices, such as the babayin (it looks cool to even write with this, though impractical), and the Filipino martial arts, Kali/Eskrima/Arnis. And don't forget our folklores! Though I do wish we can separate these from Christianity as the original versions were altered to suit the religion Spain enforced on our ancestors.

    I agree on what they said that Filipinos claim every half Filipinos as FULL FILIPINOS. Every time a half Filipino become famous, the media will always tell that they are full and whatsoever. I think Filipinos should stop claiming those who don't want to be considered as true Filipinos.

      If you have a Filipino parent, you're counted as a citizen of the Philippines from birth, no matter where you're born. So half Filipinos are just as Filipino as full Filipinos, legally speaking

      being nationalistic is good...but claiming almost everything as pinoy even the person has little Filipino blood in it is wrong and embarrassing. Filipinos should stop that.
      I remembered seeing a Singaporean swimmer won the championship, the Philippine media immediately connected him to Philippines just because his maid is Filipina.

    • @8bittimetraveler834
      @8bittimetraveler834 Před 6 lety

      zhan_rand lollll what?? Cuz his maid is filipina? You know what? When I hear the word ''flat'' it reminds me the 2 Filipino divers who made fools of themselves during the Olympic games few years ago. That was a typical Filipino failure.

    • @randomly_random_0
      @randomly_random_0 Před 6 lety +1

      i'm not trying to shame my fellow countrymen, my point is we Filipinos should be nationalistic in the right place and time. I always see this "i am filipino" or "proud to be pinoy" whenever there's a Philippines reference. And there's this filipino who will claim himself that he has 1/4 1/2 1/3 3/4 european blood bla bla blah etc just to hide his Asian/Southeast Asian/Brown skin/Austronesian descent and ancestry. It's so embarrassing and disappointing.

    The reason why we claim half Filipinos as full is because according to Philippines nationality law, anyone who has at least 1 Filipino parent is considered a citizen of the Philippines by birth, no matter where you were born in the world. So even if someone is half white half Filipino and born in the US, they are born a dual citizen of the Philippines and the US. So the constitution of the Philippines regards half Filipinos and full Filipinos as the same.

    :( Talking about the PI is such a touchy subject. The whole archipelago is an invention of Spaniards saying "hey, all these islands in this area will be named after my king". No consideration was made to the already established cultures and ethnic groups. The whole archipelago would be much different today if the Spaniards didn't intervene. The Rajahnates/Datus/Kingdoms would have warred and conquered different islands and could have created a much different country/group of countries it is now. You can see the many different ethnic/cultural/linguistic differences today if you took the time to visit Luzon, The Visayas, and Mindanao.
