Should you skip leg day? The answer depends on your goals. If you want full body aesthetics - training lower body makes you balanced. For those who want to specialise - time and energy should be directed to the upper body. Most people want strength and muscle mass in their legs and should not skip workouts. Choose exercises you enjoy as this helps with adherence. Machines, free weights or calisthenics are all effective for growing the legs.

As a calisthenics guy, i would superset pistol squats with nordic curls(4 sets each) and do calf raise for 3 sets. And done there's my leg workout. I only do this twice a week. Doesn't take more than 25 minutes. Simple but effective.
I do something similar, I start m leg workout with calf raises and Tibial raises super seted, and I follow super setting squat variations with nordic curls
My workouts don't take longer than 1 hour and a half
@@Sig83 I am talking about people who are busy with work and studies. Anyone would get in a varieties of exercise with 1 hour 30 minutes leg training. I am condensing everything as much as possible here.
Beside your well thought and organized programs you offer, the countless videos you have uploaded for all of us to see and educate ourselves, for free, i immensely respect and appreciate your words in each and every video.
People don't understand how much time consuming is to create one of your videos, and especially one with a lot of talking, like this one.
The truth is that when i watch your videos, i truly pay attention to what you say, each sentence and each word. They are so well organized and there is not a single word unnecessary or redundant.
You always get your point across and make sure you are coherent and practical with what you say.
There have been times when i watch the same video of yours and i keep discovering new meanings and concepts i hadn't realised when i watched it for the first time.
They are so packed with information and advice that one needs to focus and pay attention to grasp what you are saying and why.
What i know, and apply to my training, basically comes from you. I have,as we all have, watched and listened to many fitness influencers and athletes, but you were the reason/motivation for me to search and learn.
You made my training sustainable, enjoyable and effective.
For all of these reasons i always respect, appreciate, support, admire, love and follow FitnessFaqs and Daniel himself.
Happy 2024 Daniel!
Thank you for teaching, inspiring, being honest and consistent, and mostly for being a beautiful example of what true passion, hard work, constant learning and integrity can achieve!
All the best!👏🙏❤️
I wholeheartedly agree with this comment, thanks Daniel!
I also agree with what u said! I’m sure Daniel appreciates your support & comments! 😊 cheers!
Thanks for your support.
100% you are the real goat 🐐
Great video, Daniel. Last year, I put some real work on my lower body following your advice and saw results beyond my expectations, although I didn't go for failure every workout. Happy New Year. We appreciate your work.
Excellent video as usual with a lot of various aspects to think about, all delivered in a calm and respectful way. Well Done Daniel!
That's a badass gym Daniel!!! 💯💯💯💯💯
FYI you might have a mic issue, the "s" sounds are kind of harsh
Indeed
FWIW it does not bug me, but I see what you mean. There's a bit of a 'peak' during the pronunciation of an S.
He should use a de-esser
Once you hear it, it can't be un heard😂
A simple de-esser resolves the issue easily.
This video convinced me to start training legs again.
168cm 68kg here. I do calisthenics but once a week i do one set for legs. I usually max out with 60kg and thats it. Yesterday i tried 80kg x5 at the gym and it went pretty well. My legs look trained and they perform very well at jumping and sprinting so there you go. You dont need to blast your legs like a gym bro but please keep them functional and decent looking. Its very easy
The thing with skipping leg day, which I recently realized is that it creates imbalances which may result in injuries or chronic pain.
Bigger legs simply burn more calories as you use them even when just walking around. As someone who loves good food and also enjoys having a drink with friends, this is such a great reason to train legs. They simply help with not putting on weight.
Every bit of increased metabolic rate by default helps ;)
I really appreciate your fitness advice, which you deliver in a no-nonsense way, in such a calm and relaxed voice. It's so refreshing, compared to some well-known YTers who basically scream and hype everything they say.
Can you do a video on RDL technique? That would be awesome!
Dude your gym has sick leg machines. If I had those I'd be all on that.
I started going to the gym cause my knees were going bad, so everyday was leg day. But since I was there anyways, started doing upper body too, and 4 years later, focusing on legs is still a joy
I enjoy leg training but I've never done it consistently or really cared since all my goals are upper body skills and at 190cm many are already not possible for me without getting heavier on top of that. Looking at the rare exceptions who can perform those skills despite being heavy isn't very compelling since I'm unlikely to be on that level. I'm running out of time to make progress as it is so making it slower for no reason just doesn't seem worth it.
Talk about motivation on leg day
2:58 This statement should literally echo across the entire fitness industry as I cannot stress this enough. Everyone that never cares about the whole leg prefers bigger or more toned arms and torso, sometimes quads too. But otherwise calves, soleus, and shins are easily frowned upon. I see competitions where they stand with twigs but have remarkable upper body presentation, and the question that comes in mind is “why?”
Focus on weighted pull ups but have began to train my legs harder than ever before by a significant margin roughly 3 weeks ago. It could just be a coincidence but I had a bit of an upper body strength breakthrough the other day. Would like to think that the leg training had at least a small part in it. Thinking that perhaps the effort and determination I put into the leg training spilled over to other parts of my training. Also, though I assume the effect is overstated, maybe my body produced slightly more growth hormon and testosterone as a result of the much tougher leg training.
Started doing 7 sets of heavy belt squats 12-15 reps ( 5 min rest between sets) on my leg day followed by isolation exercises. Have a lower back issue and don't want to load my spine so belt squats is a good exercise. Aiming to do 20 reps per set. I'm using a weight that is very heavy for me so I have to pause at the top for the reps. So each set is more like continuous 1 reps. Hell lol. Toughens you up that's for sure. Previously I did a lot of stuff for my legs but never squats because of the spine issue. Never considered belt squat machine before.
I had a similar story. I always trained legs (never skipped), but I never trained them EQUALLY. I would hon on runs, do some body weight lunges and squats, but never loaded up any of those with more weight. When I DID start programming my legs similarly to my upper body, I broke through an upper body plateau I was experiencing. I don’t have as many leg days in my weekly plan as I do upper body, but I train my legs with equal intensity now and it’s incredible the difference it’s made.
@@Spidey_Ethan Yeah it changes you thats for sure. I honestly never understood how truly grueling leg days actually can be. Upper body is childsplay in comparison.
Im actually sick as a dog atm. Did legday yesterday pushing myself the furthest I have ever done in the gym. Crashed when I got home, slept for 12 hours straight and running a fever now. Did 7 sets of 12 reps on the belt squat machine, so 84 reps total. 180, 187, 190, 190, 192, 195, 200 kg.
Feels fucking insane lol. Stupid as hell to train when feeling sick but at least I learned something about how hard I can push myself. Its belt squat machine so not the same as barbell in regards to weight. Still think that workout is pretty impressive. Started out using 140 kg so crazy progression.
When you build a house You have to start with the foundation, the legs are the foundation of the body
I never skips leg day, Since you can't skip leg day if it's not even included in your program right?
Mike Tyson got huge quads by 1000 squats!!! Now imagine him doing handstands and planche 😅 pure calisthenics bro.
This is why I do full body workouts. If every day is leg day, there's no temptation to skip leg day. Nor will you accumulate as much fatigue as you would from a dedicated leg day because of all the volume you have to do in one workout to progress.
Probably cuts down on time you spend working out too.
And you're always fresh or at least not asymmetrically fatigued
Yes, full body workout is the way to go. I do it 3 days a weeks and it only costs me 90 minutes in total. Easy to maintain that, because not much time needed.
@@alexanderammerl2404 you mean 90 mins each workout or 30 mins each workout?
Because I have no idea how you could fit entire body workout in under 1 hour, let alone 30 mins. Personally, it takes me like 80 mins to hit all the compound movements and 1 isolation.
@@MrHadane no, i mean 30 min per workout. I talk about pure Calisthenics here. I only do 4 exercises, one for each main body part, then 2 min break and repeat this 3 more times.
We're all gonna make it brahs
Especially for taller guy strong legs and glutes are important for calisthenics skills, nordic curls really helped me to do a L Sit and I can see an improvement in my front lever as well.
First strong glutes, and fixing posture.
Grease the Grove (5x5) reps for deadlifts or squats really boosts testosterone, morale, optimism, and positive motivation in life with virtually no sweat. It’s a form of strength training with higher weight and long rests up to 15 minutes between sets. It can be added into daily life such as while housecleaning, working at a computer etc.
I don't think I'd ever consider myself someone who's overly concerned with having massive or super strong legs, but I do train them for symmetry and balance.
I don't skip leg day. Leg day is skipping me.
Schedule for knock knee correction??😢
honest question, i have a bulging disc l5-s1, cannot dead lift or squat with weight, are air squats, lunges and hamstring bridges with volume optimal for stronger legs?
I don't have any goals for my leggs beside flexibility, beeing able to jump high, run fast and endurance. I do sprints, strenghening flexibility work, jumping exercices and i go running. Thats al i need my leggs for. No need for super massive gym leggs (which actualy also reduce the relativ strengh of your leggs)
How does it reduce relative strength
Perfect timing I was looking the whole day today for a leg routine to grow my chicken legs and I was scared cause I got weak, stiff and small legs and don't want injury. before I start on compounds I want routine to make my legs stronger improve my joint flexibility, mobility and stability also I want to strengthen mind muscular connection. Any idea were to start there is too much information overload and im paralysed by analysis
you can probably just start with mostly compound exercises. you can just start light and pile on 5lbs per workout.
I do bodyweight sissy squats and bulgarian single leg squats, 15-30 reps for 3-5 sets, two or three times a week as my leg workout because I don't really have access to high enough weights for my legs(I don't have a gym membership or high weights at home, just a small dumb bell and a pull up bar). I tried the gym once to see my leg strength and warmed up on leg press with a plate a side for 20 reps, and worked up to 4 plates a side for 8 reps before my messed up knees started to feel off(osgood schlatter). Nothing crazy but for someone that doesn't work his legs with weights I'm pretty happy with that.
When one bullys, there's three bullies pointing at them
What’s the exercise called in 07:35 ? Motion looks like air jump squats but weighted? It’s not hack squat, looks like a quad-targeted exercise
Looks like a machine good morning
Man your voice is ASMR...
I used to hate leg day now I loc them
When it comes to legs I only train calves. Unless you wear short-shorts like the 70s, nobody will ever see your upper legs in public - not even on the beach.
Unless you are trying to be a professional body-builder (or your upper legs are freakishly small) upper leg training isn't worth how grueling it is imo.
This is the reasonable point of view I was looking for so long. If I find something horrid to see, it is a guy with disproportional legs that is proud on his huge hips. So so often, it just does not look aesthetic at all.
Recently I started lifting again and am also thinking about whether I should train them, as my legs are naturally already strong to the point of having a much stronger lower body than upper body. The internet would tell me to 'not skip leg day', but why should I not?
In the spirit of the video's view of respecting each other's views, I respect your view xd however, I think legs that are much stronger than the upper body in theory should naturally look the best. It reflects bipedal humans by default, our legs are supposed to be much stronger than our arms, that's how we stand on them every day.
NEVER‼️ #nextquestion
Is too much weight (in squats or deadlifts) a myth? How do you know, the weight doesn‘t compromise joint health or longevity?
Weighted bulgarian split squats are so damn hard! RDL feels easy compared to that demon!
Its all about Balance Fellow Humans, upper and lower body! So do them leg workouts!!
I never skip legs, I'm gaining mass throught my body equally, so even if planches and pullups are harder, I'll ultimately be stronger because of my weight to strength ratio, and, why would you skip legs anyways, they're the base of your body, they should be strong and resilient
SSuper noticeable in thiSs intro for sSome reaSson.
Little Audio problem in this video. Otherwise quality information and video as always 🔥
I dedicate 1-2 days a week to legs. i really don't want big legs, i want strong legs. Also, just like I train skills stuff for calisthenics, I train legs for being able to jump, my leg workouts are based around being able to jump higher lol.
Anyone else ever tear or sprain an LCL?
I don't like training legs cause I am stiff and thus can't move proper. 😂 But since starting kickboxing I've scaled back my goals and working on that lack of mobility. Don't need huge legs for martial arts. As long as they aren't twigs I am fine 😊 But they do need to be good in size in relation to my upper body 😅
Never skip leg day
Finally,what's up?
I love training legs. Some people look at me like I am crazy when I say this but its true. I just love to go heavy, break prs and grow stubborn muscle groups of mine. I still love to train upper body and calisthenics. But calisthenics has ended up being a side thought for me. No offend to anybody btw this is just my opinion.
If you want weak legs and back pain, sure, skip leg day. Might as well skip brain day to lessen fatigue.
Legs take so much from recovery...
Not ok
If you're not professionally climbing, you should work on legs 👐🏼
It's a shame that you don't have the ability to put automatically translated subtitles for the general public who don't necessarily understand all of English.
There's too much worrying-about-what-other-people-think in this video's audio monologue. However, the regressions sprinkled throughout the visual are worth the ten-minute time investment. Good one, Daniel.
Would cycling be a good way to do leg day?
Yeah train the way you like
You can get very respectable legs with cycling alone yes.
who's else is watching while skipping leg day
Tldr; no
Dude I don’t do legs because I don’t want to buy new suits just yet.
Every day is leg day when you set the resistance high on the elliptical.
Jesus christ, the bots in here
Never noticed, but you are right
They are everywhere on TheyTube now. Millions of fake accounts and comments made by Zion AI.
Thank you for this. The internet always has to be black or white on every single issue its tiring and obnoxious
Your supposed to train legs!
I smash pistols ... sprints, high jump and cycling
But seriously don't skip feet day
Too much leg exercises will cause muscle build up. Who wants that.
As a human, we just want to crouch like a normal human does. That's all.
What’s leg day?
And FYI, you should enable Captions so we can read instead of trying to understand you. Thks
I caved to peer pressure and trained squats for years despite having discomfort and hating it, now I have two torn labrums and a torn meniscus so I can barely train legs even if I want to 😂
Lucky boy😂
look at joe biden, when deciding to skip leg day or not.
No one wants to be Johnny Bravo...
Dan, is there anything right now that makes you feel insecure or you wish you could do better? You're flexible, lean, strong, skillful, charismatic lol
Sssssssssssssssssss
i hate weight lifting because of the awkward and mostly caricature shape it gives the body. i don't know what people see in such unusual and unnatural looking muscles. push ups and body lifting techniques are much better to give the body proper shape and naturally looking bigger muscles. and it is certainly healthier for the heart.
Just say you like calisthenics better than lifting weights because it’s either too hard for you or you just feel better doing body weight exercises than to say dumb shit like weights are bad for the your heart and lifting weights gives people unusual and unnatural looking muscles. Lifting weights will not make you look like a professional bodybuilder which is probably what you’re referring to. Daniel lifts weights and does calisthenics and he doesn’t look a caricature
@@DarinAtkins yes, please teach me what i have to say, you obviously got steroids on your tongue and your keyboard... get a grip on yourself, weight lifting is useless, unless it is medical, and it is mostly caricaturish and funny
Don’t forget… healthy looks different on every body.
Platz is god
U can tweak his training his style as a natty
There is no point in training legs. Nobody looks at a man's legs. Most of the time one wears pants. And with certain clothes, muscular legs look very bad. And developed legs make the upper part of the body look smaller.
depends on your goal, if you just want to be nice to look at then sure skip leg day if you rarely wear shorts. if you want to be a overall physically strong person then don't skip leg day
so when its hot or when you go to the beach dont you think everybody is gonna laugh at you bcs you have legs so small you can wrap your fingers around
Never. Why leave half of your body weak? So you can perform some stupid tricks easier?
Because it does not have to amount to a) weakness and, more importantly b) many guys with 'strong legs' just look horrid. The average guy already got decent legs, but to turn them into a pair of huge hams does not turn on girls mate.
@@Elucidator- You are wrong about everything. The legs dont have to be huge hams and wont look like that unless you use sorcery which only makes satans possess you or kill you.
That's a narrow minded way of seeing it. Having lighter legs increases massively increases efficiency in calisthenics. Also, legs are barely used in calisthenics and the added weight just increases the difficulty without adding anything in return on a great number of exercises.
@@JohnsonSmithson Sure, but why should a fit guy not strive to be able to do more pull ups instead of being able to push more with his legs? Not to mention the aesthetic part which you skip over: do you like the sight of legs that have completely ballooned?
@Elucidator- Bro the average guy has small legs and neither legs nor arms are the most aesthetic muscles . By thatclogic you might as well give up on training biceps .
"Never skip leg day" - is body shaming. Those who skip leg days never will go to any fitness contest anyway. We are talking advance athletes or just regular folks in the gym?
Chicken legs detected opinion rejected
Both
Body shaming? It’s for your health, not just in your training sessions but in your long term health
Also cope harder
@@Vadv3939 Do you play basketball? Have you ever seen a common basketball player with a heavy lifter legs?
You are talking to calisthenics "athletes". They aren't skipping leg day. They don't have a leg day.
👍🏼 Focus on Lower or Upper?
>>> Interesting Question❓
A: if given only one choice I would focus on Lower by “SPRINTING” in order stimulate myokine throughout the the entire body & brain 🧠
Aloha 🤙🏼
P.S. can you research “MYOKINE” and its implications on fitness. 🙏🏼
(BRAIN 🧠 and EYES 👀).
