    I don't think Mariusz Pudzianowski would've won 5 if it wasn't for the WSM IFSA split up. His static strength weakness clearly got exposed in the 2004 wsm competition.

    • @TheBcoolGuy
      @TheBcoolGuy Před rokem +3

      Yeah, I always feel that his wins were wins in a competition that's very hard to compare to what WSM was during Brian's time. Pudz was great at the moving events and maybe mediocre at the static events. While it's undeniable that he won 5, which Brian didn't quite manage (but just imagine how close he was, especially in 2021 and 2010!), but if Pudz had been competing in 2010-2023 or so, he would not have gotten 4. Maybe 2, at most 3. Not that he's bad, but that's the reality of it. Putting Brian's accomplishments into perspective. It must be unbelievably frustrating to be so close to a 5th and not get it. I think he feels, or felt, that he was destined for a 5th and if he couldn't do it, he was failing something he was supposed to be able to do. What he did was incredible, though. Astounding. What a warrior. Like Loz pointed out, the man kept showing up over and over again, and he never did worse than 7th after his first year. He was expected to come top 5 at least every year he was there, even if he fell short twice. After his rookie year, he always made the final and almost always won the group stages. From 2009 to 2023, he was one of the 7th strongest men on the planet, with no interruption, often being top 3 or THE strongest.

    • @simenandersen3262
      @simenandersen3262 Před rokem

      @@TheBcoolGuy Seems like the 5th title is cursed. We have 4 guys having 4 titles now 😅 I think the level is too high. Brian had to face peak Savickas, Hafthor, and Eddie Hall. After that he had to face Tom Stoltman. And out of nowhere comes Mitchell Hooper and wins 4 events in the final. I'm sure Stoltman or Hooper will win 4, but they will also prevent eachother from getting a 5th title

The first year he and Thor appeared at Worlds, the hype was serious!

      @@Rocker3829 not rly a fair comparison... during the period big z was winning IFSA instead of WSM, had he chosen to compete in WSM instead big z would have 5+ WSM wins (probably 6+ realistically) and Mariusz would not have 5.

    • @Maddolis
      @Maddolis Před rokem +4

      @@Rocker3829 How's it not really close? Brian has 4 wins, two silvers and four bronze (+5 other non-podium final appearances), Zydrunas as 4 wins, 6 silvers (+2 others)...
      I could see an argument for Brian's competition being tougher late career than Z's early but measuring each as a product of their respective era(s) I don't see how it's decisive even only taking Worlds into account, and for my money 4.6.0 is more impressive than 4.2.4.
      Not sure I agree with Jedi that Z would have 5 or 6, much more likely another 2 silvers but the IFSA split definitely affected his WSM medal total.

  • @PhillipCalvin627
    @PhillipCalvin627 Před rokem +2

    You already knew seeing him in 2008 he was something special. In a different group he would have thrived but that's just how it goes sometimes. 2009 looked great and the fact that he was a threat at all his first time through to the 5x WSM and Z who was at the time a 3x 2nd place finisher, 2x IFSA winner, and 6x Arnold winner. That last one alone tells you how incredible Z was at the time.
    I do have to say if he had won 2010 on the current Last Event Rule I would have thought Z would have been robbed considering he did technically have the better overall competition, even if it was by 1 event. Likewise with 2014 which, like Liz, is one of my all time favorite years... I'm not sure it would have been if he won off of the last event as well. But it does tell you how ridiculously consistent and how incredibly strong Brian is. He'd have 6 titles under his belt if those two things would have happened. I'm actually pretty happy they didn't. In 2010 it showed how one slip up can cost you the title, and in 2014 honestly watching Hafthor beat Brian and Z just pretty much coast though the Final and then to have only won off of half a point is probably the reasons that is one of my favorite years. It may have very well been undone by the Atlas Stones.
    His winning years were incredible. 2011 he got a title he absolutely deserved, and likewise in 2013 where he looked untouchable. 2015 and 2016 no question, Brian was the Worlds Strongest Man even with some serious contenders nipping at his heels.
    I never thought I'd be annoyed with talk of stones on a career overview of Brian Shaw but lets be real. Double points for an event is bullshit, as is the stone off, and IMO so is Atlas Stone winner being the tie breaker. I'm probably also a little shitty still having absolutely known when Brian didn't win his group that a Stone Off was going to greatly reduce his chances of a podium finish. After the results of 2023, I don't think he would have made the podium anyway, but maybe he would have at least been 4th or 5th which is still a lot better than such a great competitor and hero of the sport to go out on a 7th place finish. Alongside of Terry Hollands going out on a Stone Off in 2020, Oleksii Novikov missing out on 2019 on a Stone Off, and even watching Robert Oberst unnecessarily getting injured on a stone off after already not placing in the Top 2 of his heat.. I think I'm officially a Stone hater in WSM and I even lift natural stones for fun myself.

    Undoubtedly the greatest of all time at WSM. He didn't just win 4 times, but was close several other times, and lasted so long.

      Strictly at WSM Pudzianowski is the GOAT: 5 titles (one year missed due to prison sentence) last two years he competed was 1st and 2nd so finished on top instead of dragging his career overly long. Also the highest rate of won events.

      @@ti8864 at just WSM Brian has done more, just by a little. Z is imo the GOAT not just counting WSM though.

      @@spikeyspike79 he didn't have the longevity Brian did, and was winning when half the best guys went to IFSA. He stopped competing when his greatest threat came back to WSM. Don't get me wrong, 5 wins is amazing, but Brian and Z have just done more in general when you compare all their WSM careers.

      @@Micheldied What longevity? Brian last title was in 2016. he simply dragged it for too long, slowly but gradually decaying. Mariusz left in his prime after winning 5 times. He got some of his titles before the split and the last one afterwards with Big Z and the rest back. In the final year only came second after an equal battle with Big Z. He didn't force anyone to run to another federation and stayed with WSM like others could have done.

    If he didn't have to do a stone off, he could have podium. The stone off tired him out and he's older so recovery going to take longer. But he did amazing he should be ashamed of he's performance still one of the top 10 strongest men, the absolute beast of a career. What a legend. 🔥🔥🔥 well done big B

    Brian is a great ambassador for the sport. His videos of messing around with Eddie Hall are comedy gold. Those got me really interested in WSM.
    Love the sport for the insane feats of strenght but also the camaraderie despite the fierce competition.

    Thank you. It will be different not seeing him next year in a world strongest man event. Much less a final.
