  • Anyone can pull a speed control out of the box, install it in a rig and go out for a crawl. But don't you want to get the best out of that fancy new electronic box? Afterall you just spent money on it. Why not get the most out of your ESC. In this video John Holmes goes over how to program your electronic speed control for those who want the best low speed control from their RC Rock Crawler. John shows you how to set it up on his Traxxas TRX-4.

    This was maybe THE best video on explaining this. I had to try to figure these things out for myself since the Castle B-link totally f***ed up my setup, I couldn't get the b-link to program the mamba x the way I set up in the app.
    So therefore I had to buy a castle link, and this video helped me getting the ground settings pretty good.
    Thanks, John! :)

Still, so much more to learn, which you never stop doing, Am I right? Fantastic Video!!

  • @CarminesRCTipsandTricks

    John, I am among many who appreciate the time and dedication that you put into this Hobby! I'm hoping you can help me with an issue, that's not one of your products...
    I've got a Hobbywing WL10BL120 ESC and 2200kv Sensorless Brushless Motor in my Wraith, with 11/56 32 Pitch Gears. I've got only one Battery choice, a 40C, 4000 mAh 2S Lipo. The ESC is CHEAP, I know. But I'm hoping for adequate! It came with an equally Cheap Programming Card, with limited adjustment. At least I've got a good Futaba Radio.
    The question is, I can adjust Punch, but have no idea where it should be! This is my first Brushless Setup, AND first Lipo Battery, after 37 years in the Hobby. 😵😱 I'm behind the curve!! Thanks to this Video, I finally have some idea what Punch IS, but still don't know which direction to go to get the smoothest start for what I'm working with. Oh, and can you give me an idea of what the Timing should be, from the ESC?
    Can you please help?
    I've already got my second system picked out. IF I can ever get enough money at one time. It will be a Sidewinder 4, and a GOOD Brushless Motor from you! I'll probably stay in the 2000-2400kv range, but haven't figured out - Sensorless or Sensored. Frankly, for my needs, I'm OK with the Sensorless Motor I have now, knowing that a higher quality, better made Motor, with Castle's latest version of the Sidewinder, should be nearly perfect, at least within my horrible income! 😫
    Thank you, Carmine 💥 ⛽

      Hey, I can help you a little. Im sure John missed your response. He is usually extremely prompt in answering all questions...

    • @bigchungus-oj8zz
      @bigchungus-oj8zz Před 5 lety +1

      So, first off regarding punch, there are 2 areas addressed while programming esc; 1. Initial punch. You want that set high. If there is a # or percent to pick, pick 100%. This is not the place to adjust for wheelspeed. Reverse should be set to high as well. 100%. Next is the exponential or throttle curve; This is where to control wheel speed and a controlled feel. JOHN said to set the puch control to 30%. This helps give you lots of torque at a low consistant speed. If you grab full trigger, you are still going to get to the wheel speed, the 30% punch will be over-ruled by holding the floodgates open to allow the battery to ramp up the speed quick enough to jump from rock to rock or blast over a tree root.
      Next is timing. Set timing to minimum. Timing adjustments are best left for racing and really dictated by the motor/esc your working with. Rock Crawlers, unless U4 racing, shouldn't mess with cranking up the timing. Finally, you mentioned that you have a Wraith(love mine) with spur/pinion of 56 and 11..which gives you a 5.09 ratio. Without knowing the diff ratios, tranny, tire height, i dont know your final drive ratio. But, assuming you're running a Status Quo Wraith, 5.09 is perfectly fine. Instead of leaning towards a Castle SW4 ESC with a brushed motor..personally I'd wait and save for a Castle Mamba X with a Brushless Holmes Hobby Motor. Or, a Holmes Hobby Trailmaster BLE Esc with a Holmes Hobby Brushless motor; the Puller Pro or the Trailmaster Pro Brushless 540 or 550 at 3300KV. The sweet spot is FOREVER! especially over brushed, it lasts much longer, so its a better investment and You WONT IMMEDIATELY WANT MORE!! You will be satisfied like THANKSGIVING FULL! You will LOVE YOUR WRAITH, and chics will want you! I feel you on the $$, i went from grossing about $25K/mth to SSDI, maxed the system at just over $24K/YEAR!! In the meantime you're probably having a great time with an Axial AE2 esc and 35T Axial Crawler motor. I hope this helps...i have 47 to 49 RC Vehicles. I'm talking about currently operational, running fully set to go, not diecasts or partial builds im "working on". Just so you know I'm not a Noob(we were all noobs at one time, no insult to anyone intended)..

    @KTMcaptain Před 4 lety +3

    10:15 that’s not at all how internal combustion engine timing works.
    The flame propagation is fairly constant but the piston speed is dynamic. Without timing, the pressure from the combustion process will be trying to force a piston down that’s already moved away from it. So the fuel mixture is ignited before the piston crests top dead center in order to unleash more pressure onto it. The faster an engine operates the faster the piston will move away from the combustion pressure.
    This actually maximizes torque and efficiency. Too much timing and you get knock events that will damage the engine. Too little timing and the engine heats up because you’re dropping efficiency.
    Typically engines run the proper timing to maximize efficiency under low loads when a knock event won’t hurt the engine, but retards timing down to a safer advance in order to safely operate under higher pressures.
    Diesel engines operate much the same except for the fuel ignites upon injection so engine timing is based off fuel timing not spark. They also must maintain proper alignment with the injector spray pattern and piston bowl shape.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  Před 4 lety

      yeah, more of a basic conceptual similarity than anything else. I figured many people would understand at least the timing advance/ rpm relationship. Get outside of the golden zone and efficiency suffers. Can't really go too low on a brushless motor with sensorless technology, which is a key difference to ICE.

    Hey John, would I be able to get similar results with your Trailmaster Pro BL and the SW4? What would be the highest KV possible with similiar results. I'm running the HW1080 with your Trailmaster Sport 550 21T, I love the control on it, its pretty quick too but I want to go brushless and donate this setup tk my secondary rig. Any suggestions? Bday coming up, gotta put in my request!
    Its for my TRX-4 Defender with stock drivetrain, 3S traxxas lipo. I've ridded the roof rack and spare wheel w/ accs. Not sure if that makes a difference.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  Před 6 lety +1

      The TrailMaster Pro won't be able to start up quite as smoothly since it is two pole. Anything above 2200kv is going to have more trouble being smooth sensorless at low speed, no matter how many poles, which is about the same speed as the TrailMaster Sport 21t 550. If you want more wheelspeed than that, you will probably have to go sensored to keep the startup and low end torque as good as brushed.

    Is the sound coming out from the ESC or motor?

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  Před 6 lety +2

      the motor makes the noise. The ESC is what causes it to happen.

      They can take higher timing advance, but that isn't a good idea for a crawler.

      Every now and then a racing motor will also be smooth on the bottom end, out of pure luck. It is not very typical though.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  Před 5 lety

      over 3500kv tends to be a poor choice due to ESC amp swamping.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies  Před 6 lety +3

      3.2 is a pretty good cutoff. It's 3.2v per cell. so a 3 cell pack will cut off about 9.6v .
