      Jeez, when this game came out I was only 2 years old, but I played the heck out of its demo to the best of my ability as an illiterate little kid. I think it's awesome that you enjoyed the game so much as an adult, it really just emphasizes how video games aren't meant for any one age demographic, and how they can bridge the gap between younger and older generations. I see older folks and think "We live in such different worlds," but knowing we have this little bit of overlap really makes me realize our worlds aren't as different as they might seem.

    Great review! :) Threads of Fate is a game that I feel is sadly overlooked, compared to the rest of Square's impressive RPG library. I felt like this was a very fun game and that the lighthearted story matched with the tone, in particular with Mint's story as you said. I did enjoy playing through Mint's side of the game more than Rue's, but Rue's part wasn't bad. Mint's character was just too much fun! :P Great video!

    • @HighLevelReviews
      @HighLevelReviews  Před 8 lety +6

      +RPGtourguide I really appreciate your comments. They makes creating these reviews worth it. Rue's certainly wasn't bad but ended up feeling a bit less poignant than it could have been. Mint's story just left me in tears. I love the childish and mischievous humor. It's unfortunate that a lot of lesser known RPGs seem to never be mentioned by a lot of people discussing games from this era. It has so much to offer.

    Came here because I saw the "Threads of Fate" logo in a minimme video reviewing graphically impressive games on PS1 (though this didn't end up being the game that was reviewed)
    Unfortunately not quite the gameplay I think I would enjoy, graphically and narratively, it certainly seems worth watching. At least the Mint story. (Her sister seems so mean! :( forcing her to eat nothing but pumpkins!)
    Incidentally, your thumbnails are aesthetically satisfying and appealing as a source of information. The simple white background, single character and title provides enough information without being confusing or overwhelming. Great job!
    It might be cool to have a border, so that recommended videos (on the right) are nicely distinguished from each other, rather than seamlessly melding with the youtube background.

    Yet another relic from Square’s past that like Brave Fencer Musashi, Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, Thousand Arms and so many others, never saw the light of day here in Europe. This looks like a game I would have loved but in this era Square treated us like we murdered their unborn child or something.

    First time I had played this, I really liked Rue and not so much thought about Mint. Revisiting this game made me realize just how fun a character Mint is and I preferred her more than Rue, though I tend to finish her side of the story first before Rue (you already know why). But guess who's the character that got more re-plays? World domination!
    And yes, I hate that Mel's stage, good thing those minigames just need to be completed once. Well, at least the "big balls of fun" was the easiest among them. And, I'm never good with platforms. The game is also too short; I would've want to explore the world more.
    Neat review!

    Great review! Threads of Fate is a really fun, enjoyable game. Mint is one of the best, most entertaining characters I've ever seen in an rpg. Her interactions with the towns people and her rival are good comedy. She overshadows Rue who has the personality of wall paper paste.

    • @thehevandragon
      @thehevandragon Před 2 lety +2

      Honestly it fits, given how flat out insufferable Mint is.
      She gets a more entertaining story, while he gets a better ending and a character that isn’t super dynamic but relatively simple and is actually bearable as a person.

  • @innocynttwilight
    @innocynttwilight Před 5 lety +1

    One thing i have seen overlooked in reviews is the one game breaking progression flaw during the end game areas with Rue. This being due to how picking up transformations could lock the player out of progressing to next area with the element gates and with back tracking out of the question effectively lock that save as incomplete.
    Otherwise, this is definitely one game to easily looked over and worth a play through.

    Ok I know this video is about a year old but this game was my childhood. I would beat rue’s story several times mostly because I liked his ability to transform into other enemies. I vaguely remember mints story mostly because I didn’t mind her magic ability but her story was funny. The music in this game was amazing especially for the fact that it was for the first PlayStation. There were some parts in the game like fancy Mel’s platforming levels that i hated especially because it was a bit finicky. The other problem would have to be how text heavy the game was...but that’s mostly because I was a 3 year old and didn’t like to read. Still I love this game and will never forget it. I am actually considering getting a PlayStation 4 to get this game off the PlayStation network.

  • @hfric
    @hfric Před 7 lety +3

    Just found this game and played it for 1h ... 30 min of both characters and ... your right ... its a streamlined RPG that had so many cuts... it became a Platformer instead... with a good story and cutscenes that just made me want to see more ...simply put, it was like watching a good anime ...
    Rue story had a more serious tone ... and his transform abilities where a nice addition ... when you played him, the game was designed to be more a challenge for your brain with good puzzels ...
    Mint story , on the other had was full on Kawaii comedy... with good pacing ... and her magic abilities made her easy to play with (it felt sometimes like she had a gun in her hand , lulz)
    The only killing factor for this game is its length... you can finish the whole game in 6h ... you need 3h per each character, ouch ... overall i can say , if you like anime get it ... its a one sitting / 2 sittings game

    • @MerkhVision

      That short length is actually appealing for me. I seldom can play games for too long. 40hrs is about the max I can play any RPG, no matter how much I love it. But this games short breezy length along with everything else about it makes me very interesting in trying it out!

    You don't visit ALL the same locations with both characters--the Ghost Temple is exclusive to Rue, and Gamul Forest is exclusive to Mint. That said, I do wish there were a little more variation between the characters' settings. Also, it makes sense that they referred to the relic generically since more than one relic exists (Maya's Book of Cosmos is another, for instance), and Rue and Mint don't even learn Valen's relic is called the Dewprism until they get to the Tower of Maya rather late in the game. When they set out, they were just looking for "any old" relic.

    • @HighLevelReviews
      @HighLevelReviews  Před 7 lety +1

      You are right, I shouldn't have said all. My apologies.
      As for the relic, my point wasn't that it didn't make sense to be called that in the game-world or that it wasn't satisfactorily explained - just that it wasn't necessarily inventive or challenging and felt lazy/uninspired. Thanks for your comments!

    I have to disagree. I LOVED Brave Fencer Musashi from start to finish, and I thought I would get more of the same with Threads of Fate. But no. The dungeon design is coma-inducingly boring, the bosses don't telegraph their moves slowly enough, fights become a contest of who can spam knockdown blows the fastest, grinding takes so long for such little payoff that I don't feel like bothering, and the platforming is only slightly better than Bubsy 3D.
    And those are just the MAJOR flaws. Up to the point I finally rage-quit at the Ghost Temple, I was constantly scratching my head at the truly horrible design choices: Why have two doors leading into the same shop? Why no icons or signs to remind you which shop does what? Why have the different destinations in a menu instead of organically linked to the town hub? Why does the main menu cursor start out on "Continue" but has the typical colors of text reversed so that it looks like "New Game" is selected? Why can't I attack and then immediately jump? Why does this one teeter-totter in Mel's minigames work completely unlike every teeter-totter you've encountered to that point, with nothing to signal it? Why have water splashing as the cue in the underground tunnel if you can't tell what direction it's coming from? Why does Rue only retain the last 5 or so monsters he killed when it would be so much cooler to let you keep the entire collection? Why does water look like blue carpet with not even dynamic textures? Why is there no consistent pattern of obstacles when you're running from the giant spiky ball?
    Sorry, but this was one of Square's few stinkers during an otherwise flawless run through the 90's.
