As a Hongkonger, we usually put peanut butter inside the bread only and have it at tea time but this really looks yummy! Also, I’m so impressed that he used that brand of condensed milk, which is a famous and local brand in Hong Kong.
I got seriously chubby during my years of study in Hong Kong. I was genuinely happy back then - it's a busy city, food heaven. Years later, right now, sitting in Norway, I'm forking the 'healthy' salmon and veggies while watching your video getting all nostalgic :) Thank you for your video to make it seem quite easy to reproduce.
When I read the comments I am always amazed by the number of people who do not understand what "style" or "my interpretation" means. Donal isn't trying to make an "authentic" or "exact" reproduction of the food he enjoys on his travels. He is creating something new inspired by techniques & flavors he's experienced.
You are right and would like to add. Just because he added some jam, ice cream and condensed milk (which apparently they don't in HK), people are screaming that it isn't HK style. I observed this, 1. HK french toast is super thick. 2. HK french toast has stuffing. So, in my opinion, this is still HK style. He wasn't trying to do a copy-paste of HK food.
Eric Lewis ikr its like u can't here or maybe u can't tell its not exact
Well said. It’s his take on it. It’s not an authentic recipe, however, Donal is putting his stamp on things. TBH, sometimes I like his interpretations better than the originals. Well done Donal. X👍🏻
I understand that he is trying to put his own 'spin' on HK french toast, but I feel that a defining characteristic of HK style french toast is that it is deep fried, instead of just pan fried (as he said, HK food is "suuper indulgent") and I think that's what triggering people (or at the very least, myself) more than anything else - because to me, HK style french toast isn't HK style french toast if it hasn't been deep fried and developed crispy flecks of egg batter stuck to the sides. His recipe is definitely indulgent, and it looks very delicious, but I think he needs to up the fat content a little bit more to make it "HK style" rather than just "indulgent"
Exactly. I am from hong kong and i dont even understand why people are being so hateful over this!
I am from Hong Kong. Love your version especially with the icecream on top. Never thought of that before - good idea indeed. What not?! Will try definitely.
I keep saying people say French toast is never had for breakfast - maybe you don't lol, but I grew up in Hong Kong and I loved having it as a breakfast treat.
Oh my goodness that looks heavenly delicious 😍😍😍
Omg...I love anything with PB&J...I spread it between warm pancakes and it is heaven!! Super for the kids on a chilly Sunday morning.
Just to be clear, we never have French toast for breakfast here in HK. It's for afternoon tea only. Also, we deep fried the French toast and not fried it. And we eat it with golden syrup and butter. This recipe is definitely inspired by HK style French toast and not a remake. Looks yummy though
My god, that looks ridiculously good. I'm not sure I'm going to make it (I'd feel so guilty to eat an entire one by myself), but I imagine this is beyond delicious. I'm *loving* the Travel series format, Donal! Keep them coming! ❤️
OMG! This looks amazing. I'm definitely going to make it
I think I will make this next weekend! Thanks, Donal!

Greetings from Hong Kong!!!!
I would not share that! LOL I'd eat every delicious bite myself! Great recipe, Donal!! :-)
I could care less if it's "authentic" or not, I'm going to make this and eat it and enjoy it.
Omg im so sad you didnt try their char siew bao (bbq pork bun) its so good....
Love your vids
We use condensed milk for fun here in Brazil lol. It's our sugar substitute.
My eyes loved it not so much my hips 😂 great recipe Donal
You could live off this for a week, then you would die. One of the best parts of any good trip is the food. Sometimes it is bad but that just makes the good that much better when you find it. I spent several months in the UK and still recall some of the meals I really enjoyed over a decade ago. Lake District hospitality for one clue.
Looooove it😘😘😘😘😘😘in morocco we looove this kind of foooood....yummmmm
Hello from HK
Donal, I cannot unsee the way you just whipped those eggs!!! 😬
I love pineapple bun and hk-style french toast!
But cafe match box is really expensive as a local-style restaurant and i think i would only go there because of the decoration.
Welcome to Hong Kong! Hope you enjoyed your stay in the "food paradise". If you're looking for more authentic and tastier "cha-chang tan"(as a local from Hong Kong, the restaurant you tried is tourist-oriented and only has the outlook of Hong Kong traditional food, without the authentic taste), you should definitely go to Happy Valley and try "Cheung Hing Restaurant". Anyway, good to see HK food getting some love!
Just read some other comments before me, and yes, you should try Egg Tart. It is truly a Hong Kong classic and it is not difficult to make.
He’s favourite saying in every show - Look .. at .. that .
Lovely recipe...btw i like your hair colour. 👍😊
great
WOW!!FIVE SPICE! the top secret of hong kong style french toast LOL.
But, my teacher taught me that dont let the toast soak too much batter, it should be fried immediately after dipping the batter to keep the bread inside not too soft and wet.
next long weekend breakfast for me.........aiming to full indulgence.
5:18 I know what are you thinking camera man... Lol
please upload a chocolate pudding vidiova.
I'm big fan of your foods and desarts
I like that you even used a hong kong style condensed milk 😂😂
I watch because I can’t eat. working on the summer bod 😂 it looks sooo good though 😭
I've had pineapple buns but never with a chunk of butter. Is the butter different from what we have in the west?
Donal, come to Indonesia please..
Your so cute. Love your videos
Recipe/Video for a brioche please
Okinomiyaki recipe please
The direct translation of the dish in Cantonese is "western more" XD , so I would've thought people around the world would know what it is and how to make it, I thought wrong
👍🏻
What brand of shirt is he wearing in the video here? (The black one)
As a Hong Kong people, I am surprised you chose French toast instead of egg tart. This is definitely a giant French toast ever I seen coz we usually just use sandwich bread and put peanut butter only. Also most HK people prefer serve it with syrup more than condensed milk.
Looks yummy but HK never add jam to our french toast
Quarantine day 17........ my thighs dont stand a chance 😭
This is a great series! I'm glad you explore more than just the typical western tourists' destinations and get to more areas (guessing from the map in the intro clip). Also maybe next time you go to central asia too, we're a big big continent! And of course you can do no wrong when it comes to baking :)
- “It might not be a breakfast for one”
- Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson enters the chat
u need to come to Indonesia to try food call Martabak Manis & Martabak Telor ...😂
Calorific = delicious
I am just sitting here wondering what else I could possibly stuff inside that loaf. LOL
sliced berries & nutella.
Hazelnut spread.
5:18 interesting technique 🤔
~thecitywhereigrewupin~
accent?
You should have cut off the crust of the brioche bread before making the french toast.
Is that a spot on your shirt (at end) ?
I gained weight just watching the video. May need an intervention after this. I did alter it a bit by making the pocket a little bigger and piped in a pbj mixture before soaking. Also used cinnamon instead of 5 Spice and drizzled with cream cheese glaze. Not for the faint of heart or everday but........
I'm doing keto. This definitely isn't keto friendly. Decadent is the word I would use to describe it.
I was on keto until I made PB &J french toast... Back to Keto tomorrow !!!
Hey! This recipe you adapted from a recipe that's been adapted is inauthentic! How dare you!?
Noice
Insulin resistance central.
We don't put jam inside the french toast in HK
we put peanut butter
yes, just peanut butter :)
I'd say we either put jam or peanut butter, not both together, and never ice-cream
Helloooo...!!!??? Donal is making his ‘HK-inspired’ French Toast. He isn’t trying to copy+paste the exact recipe. This is just his interpretation. Don’t get your panties in a bunch just because one or two ingredients aren’t in the ‘original’ version
Come on. Peanut butter AND jam try it and you'll love it
