    As a Hongkonger, we usually put peanut butter inside the bread only and have it at tea time but this really looks yummy! Also, I’m so impressed that he used that brand of condensed milk, which is a famous and local brand in Hong Kong.

    I got seriously chubby during my years of study in Hong Kong. I was genuinely happy back then - it's a busy city, food heaven. Years later, right now, sitting in Norway, I'm forking the 'healthy' salmon and veggies while watching your video getting all nostalgic :) Thank you for your video to make it seem quite easy to reproduce.

    When I read the comments I am always amazed by the number of people who do not understand what "style" or "my interpretation" means. Donal isn't trying to make an "authentic" or "exact" reproduction of the food he enjoys on his travels. He is creating something new inspired by techniques & flavors he's experienced.

    • @vince7079
      @vince7079 Před 6 lety +4

      You are right and would like to add. Just because he added some jam, ice cream and condensed milk (which apparently they don't in HK), people are screaming that it isn't HK style. I observed this, 1. HK french toast is super thick. 2. HK french toast has stuffing. So, in my opinion, this is still HK style. He wasn't trying to do a copy-paste of HK food.

      Well said. It’s his take on it. It’s not an authentic recipe, however, Donal is putting his stamp on things. TBH, sometimes I like his interpretations better than the originals. Well done Donal. X👍🏻

      I understand that he is trying to put his own 'spin' on HK french toast, but I feel that a defining characteristic of HK style french toast is that it is deep fried, instead of just pan fried (as he said, HK food is "suuper indulgent") and I think that's what triggering people (or at the very least, myself) more than anything else - because to me, HK style french toast isn't HK style french toast if it hasn't been deep fried and developed crispy flecks of egg batter stuck to the sides.His recipe is definitely indulgent, and it looks very delicious, but I think he needs to up the fat content a little bit more to make it "HK style" rather than just "indulgent"

    Just to be clear, we never have French toast for breakfast here in HK. It's for afternoon tea only. Also, we deep fried the French toast and not fried it. And we eat it with golden syrup and butter. This recipe is definitely inspired by HK style French toast and not a remake. Looks yummy though

    You could live off this for a week, then you would die. One of the best parts of any good trip is the food. Sometimes it is bad but that just makes the good that much better when you find it. I spent several months in the UK and still recall some of the meals I really enjoyed over a decade ago. Lake District hospitality for one clue.

    Welcome to Hong Kong! Hope you enjoyed your stay in the "food paradise". If you're looking for more authentic and tastier "cha-chang tan"(as a local from Hong Kong, the restaurant you tried is tourist-oriented and only has the outlook of Hong Kong traditional food, without the authentic taste), you should definitely go to Happy Valley and try "Cheung Hing Restaurant". Anyway, good to see HK food getting some love!
