Meet Copper the talking dog who uses sound buttons to chat with owner | SWNS

  • This genius dog has learned how to 'SPEAK' using a sound board and can now ask to go walkies - and even tell its owners 'I love you'. Copper, a one-year-old red fox Labrador, has learned to press buttons with pre-recorded words to talk to her owner, Tia Herrell, 50. Now the intelligent pooch can press one of 40 buttons available to communicate her needs. She can ask to be let outside to do her business, and even knows, and communicates, where in the house Tia's daughter Savannah Herrell, 11, is located.
    Speech-language pathologist Tia made Copper's first sound board herself out of wood, recordable buttons and heavy-duty Velcro in February 2020. Mother-of-one Tia, from Stevenson Ranch, California, USA, said: "I think it's so amazing I can speak to my dog and she can speak back.

      Yup, my dogs feel sorry for me cause they don’t need language they read minds. My little dog mimics my facial expressions to see how Im feeling. First time I noticed it was when I had a sinus infection & my eyes were kinda squinted. We clearly don’t deserve dogs.

    • @bruce2357
      @bruce2357 Před 2 lety +18

      What there is see is that the dog is trained to push buttons and people are believing that somehow the dog is speaking, it's not.
      @Gail Everett

    • @NothingByHalves
      @NothingByHalves Před 2 lety +16

      They can learn to push them in order and associate the sound - no different than any other dog training where they link a word with an outcome. I did see one video many months ago where the dog pressed "why Mom poop" and the woman had a whole conversation with the dog about why she pooped. Well... as long as they are both happy I guess...

    • @NothingByHalves
      @NothingByHalves Před 2 lety +15

      @Gail Everett I think the scientists will agree with Bruce to be honest.
      My dog once asked me for a cup of tea - not by pressing any buttons, but by dashing into the living room as though she was desperate to go outside, then standing staring at the kettle. When I asked, rather baffled, "do you want a cup of tea?" she danced around and licked her lips. She'd learned the phrase "cupoftea" because those are the words I repeatedly used when I was making one for her (no sugars, more warm milk than anything else). If there were five buttons that said "I want cup of tea" and she learned to press them in order (and only then got her reward) then I could have trained her to do that too. But why put a dog through that when one button would do?
      It's a fun thing to do for training and a great way to engage with a dog but a far better way is if the human just paid more time and attention getting to know their dog - they are speaking all the time.

    • @NothingByHalves
      @NothingByHalves Před 2 lety +3

      @Gail Everett my dog is no more, unfortunately, but she was the dearest thing in my life and still is to this day. I used to have a cup of tea first thing in the morning and make one for her using the same tea bag and then add a load of cold milk. I was stunned when she stood at the open back door and wouldn't go out. I thought she was desperate for a wee. But then she burned a hole in the kettle with her eyes and looked back at me and back at the kettle. She was so happy with herself for getting her request across.
      So in this instance, a single button would have done...but I doubt they have one that says "tea" 🤣
      I can see after your explanation how the buttons would be useful for a dog. What was bugging me was the "human like sentences" - not from people like you who clearly know how to coach, but from those who think they are having conversations - verbally - with their dogs when they are clearly pressing random buttons and getting very confused. Some of the examples I've seen have been really poor.
      I love that your daughter's dog can ask to have her ears scratched and then ask on behalf of another dog. That's really beautiful to hear 😊💫

    • @NothingByHalves
      @NothingByHalves Před 2 lety +5

      @Gail Everett Yes, my dog - the lovely Sally (or Scally-wag as I used to call her) - has been gone for twice as long as she was with me. There just wasn't the knowledge back then for how to train them so it was all guesswork back then.
      Raising a glass to our gone but never forgotten best friends.
      P.s. do you think the mat could be programmed to train men? Or are they a lost cause? 🤣 xx

Why don't you just KNOW what I am thinking?" -- and then she doesn't even LOOK at the button, she just steps on the right one for the conversation. Trusting that this isn't edited afterward to make her look more conversant. I have buttons for our pups- one says "OUTSIDE" and the other is "WATER" - the terrier uses the outside button and the beagle will let me know if her water bowl is low by using that button.

      There is no doubt that dogs can learn simple “press a button and expect/know the result”. Pavlovian conditioning. Just if you always say the word “walk” when you’re taking the dog for a walk, they’ll learn it. But deeper, abstract concepts or sentences, there’s no evidence of that complex language skills like that.

    I’m not sure how I feel about all these talk buttons. It’s cool but also makes me uneasy. I like the natural communication of actions, routine, body language. I think I would try to teach them to tell me if they feel sick or hurt but I don’t think I’d do all the other stuff.

      Why does it make you feel uneasy? It’s just different form of training. Dogs and other pets already recognized words and such.
      The “other stuff” helps model the communication method. Having them communicate when they feel sick or hurt is absolutely part of the end goal, but there needs to be practice in between, and hopefully your pet doesn’t get frequently sick so you have to practice with other activities first. That way, when something does happen, they know the method and it’s easier to teach them concepts like hurt, sick, etc.

    I have long thought that if a dog could talk, he or she would just constantly tell people to give them treats or toys. We already know that's what dogs want most of the time, like a small child.
