Macadamia farming headache in Mt. Kenya

When The Returns Of Coffee And Tea Farming For Many Central Kenya Farmers Failed To Meet Their Expectations, Some Of Them Tried Alternative Cash Crop Farming To Supplement Their Dwindling Incomes. One Of Alternatives Was Macadamia Farming And It Proved To Be A Great Choice As The Returns Were Good And Most Farmers Were Happy, Sadly Things Changed Post The Covid 19 Pandemic And The Macadamia Farmers Are Crying Foul As Most Are Not Breaking Even And Some Of Businesses That Depended On The Trade Have Shut Down.

Even Malawi is planning to plant a lot of Tea, What will Kenya be left with? Avocado farms are exploding in growth in Colombia,Chile,Brazil,Mexico. We cant compete. We have a FTA agreement with Europe and we couldn't even meet 40% of the previous quotas.

The only person who knows about Macadamia is Mwangi wa Iria. Brokers wa Kahawa na Macadamia wameletwa juzi na Gachagua. We were selling Mcadamia at KShs 200 at the farm gate and there were no letters from the Government to prove anything. Soon, Gachagua will acquire the Mwea Rice Mills and all other Private Mills will be closed. Even the rice fields will be taken away from the farmers and impoverishment of Mt. Kenya People will be complete. Bure Kabisa.
