This interviewer is just digging & digging trying to get a shocking answer, the big scoop to build a narrative & defame somebody he probably never knew...bad press...leave Johnny alone.

I'm not defending anybody but being just a few years younger than the Ramones, I can tell you growing up in the 60s and 70s as a white kid you were very much surrounded by prejudiced thinking and language towards most minorities. Particularly in a lower middle class setting probably. But it was pretty much all just talk, and certainly as the times wore on began to fade (as they are still fading). I'm sure in the black community there was a lot of salty racial stereotyping. I think it's all sad and wrong, but in these days of painting with the broadest brush possible it may be helpful to add some context and reality.
Let's not forget that they all grew up while leaded gasoline was still a gigantic and widespread thing, and they were in NYC of all places, which had some of the worst air pollution in the country. All that leaded gas exhaust was an anti-brain food, so it had to mess with them in some way. Might be part of why Joey's OCD was so bad, but that's just poor speculation on my part.
Marky waited till johnny was goid and dead before he started saying this shit. Zero integrity, and I live Marky Ramone. You did yourself no favors with this stuff, Mark.
They spoke crap about each other back in the days too Joey And Johnny hated each other from 1981 until joeys death in 2001 and marky and johnny hated each other The only members in the ramones that didnt have anything against Joey was Tommy and CJ the rest of the members picked on Joey
I'm no sherlock holmes, but just looking at markys body language and the way he talks like it really feels like he doesnt even believe in his own words like just bounces off what joey said Interviewer "Was Johnny a racist" " *stall* talks about sardines", Interviewer again asks the same question " err you know like joey said he was a facist... so you know it all goes together..." Yeah mate you nailed it
You're nearly there. He doesn't want to slander a man he loved; aka he doesn't want to tell the truth because today it isn't "kosher". He's defending a mate, though struggling to do it. Johnny was was a full time racist and proud of it
Marky basically says no but doesn't answer to sell his book. So not technically throwing Johnny under the bus but I completely blame the interviewer for trying so hard to paint Johnny like that.
Johnny used the hard r before and Marky spoke on that as well. He never ended up saying he was he just asserted how irritated it made him since he grew up in a family who preached that color didn't matter.
Johnny had a large collection of Reggae lps, one of his favorite was Marley and he even had a black bass player "Alan" in PIL ... I've seen black punk rockers in the 70s wearing nazi swastikas
Two different Johnnys buddy ... Punk was such a fun feeling wayyyy back when ... A LOT of offensive stuff was said and wore on shirts .... That was kind of part of it
Here's A breakdown... Johnny was a Staunch Conservative with a dark sense of Humor. Joey was a Hardcore Liberal...... And Conservative's LOVE to get Liberals in a Panic. It makes their Day. And i think, especially after the problem with Linda transpired, that Johnny REALLY became a Fascist in Joey's eyes. Joey wrote THE KKK TOOK MY BABY AWAY.... even poor Monte Melnick has said on record..."read the lyrics, listen to the song...". ( Johnny was also reputed to carry a KKK membership card in his wallet, but i think it was just something to freak people out with, though if so... It's a pretty lame way to do so.) What Marky doesn't seem to answer is the direct question... Did Johnny collect Nazi stuff? Johnny doesn't seem the type, as he was more interested in Horror movie posters and baseball cards. I honestly think Racism was MAYBE there, but not something he dwelled on too Seriously. The person who DID collect Nazi stuff WAS Dee Dee. He grew up in Germany and has said on record that that was just something kids did back in the days when you could scour areas of battle and find and trade things. But i don't think that this made Dee Dee a racist. Dee Dee's Major concern was getting through a full day of being Dee Dee. At the end of the day? I think the Fascist card was just something played out between Joey and Johnny for WHATEVER reason only known to them. I think Johnny viewed a Black RAMONES Fan no different than a Latino Fan ...or a Jewish Fan ...or an Asian Fan ...or a White Fan. A RAMONES Fan is a RAMONES Fan. .....unless you were a Commie. ( ...he Hated Commies !!! 😆)
This is probably the closest to the truth. Marky will hem and haw around it, trying to sell his shitty book. Johnny isn't with us anymore, so he can't respond. I cannot fathom Johnny being a racist, but I bet he liked to say and do things to raise eyebrows for fun.
@@gretashapiro4118 comunist is not a race, your comment makes no sense. Johnny would never get along with tom morello, the biggest commie in business along with Roger waters
Right, but as it turns out was not written about Johnny. I can see how you could see the lyrics that way, but otherwise it’s apparently a mistake by monte. Johnny is famously a huge dickhead. I don’t think he was out to get Joeys goat as much as it annoyed him that Joey was into what he was. they relied on each other for their living and I assume the animosity has way more to do with Johnny marrying Linda than anything else. But being prejudiced isn’t really surprising or something that needs defending. He lived unapologetically, and we don’t need to apologize or make excuses for it. He just was what he was.
This video is laughable. I would be hesitant to take anything he's saying with even a grain of salt since it's pretty widely known that Marky and Johnny despised each other.
No you´re not a racist then...but saying ´the war was cool and it´s a punk thing´ is one of the most ignorant things I have read in a while. Huge disrespect for the people who actually experienced WW2, one of the most gruesome periods in our history. I know you don´t mean to be disrespectful, but please be more carefull with your words, not a ´cool´ thing to say.
He treated poor Joey like garbage but in the end Joey got the last laugh Joey was more popular than Johnny ever were and Johnny retired in 1998 while Joey had shows around in new york until 2000 and worked on a solo album plus he was worth around 5-6 million dollars at the time of his death
Why’s he trying to pry and answer out of Marky as to wether or not Johnny was a racist? It’s pretty clear that he doesn’t want to disrespect his dead band mates. I wonder, if Joey and the others never died, would they have made up and played again?
It was like he was trying to sensationalize a tiny snippet from the book. The majority of the book was about the band, life, events that happened through the years, and a small portion was about day to day dealing with each other on tour, things any band goes through. Ask any band, they'll tell you about being cooped up with each other for hours and hours, day after day, just eventually are at each other's throats, until they learn to deal with each other and get through it. It's part of growing up. It's part of anyone's life to learn to deal with different personalities. And yes, tuna fish will stink up a tight space like inside a van, lol. They toured in vans back then.
August 30, 2016 In a world filled with perfect people, everyone would get along. But we dont live in such a world (at the current moment), and people are not perfect and all have prejudices. Its human nature to discriminate in general (ie types of people or things, that one likes or doesnt like). So what if Johnny was a "racist", murder and theft are worse behaviors than racial slurs or "racist" thinking-- yet in todays world many are far more shocked by differing views and opinions, than by theft or murder. I dont agree with everything that Johnny believed, but I actually admire the fact that he was "politically incorrect" (so few are in today's world). And it actually makes me like Johnny even more. DG
Jay Bird both sides are guilty of thinking their feelings matter more than facts. I will say that I have seen it be much more prevalent with the progressive liberals these days.
Stiff Richard I totally don’t believe he’s racist but I call out people like Michael Jackson for being a molester it’s not a really good argument Yknow if someone’s dead and they got dirt they still got dirt

Both Dee Dee and Johnny had their political views on certain matters and you see the uncomfortably of Mark's views but it shouldn't be taken away at any case in terms of their music and legacy. Joey was the left Johnny was the right But those were of different times. Let's not go "sensitive" on this....
I usually hate it when someone says that about not being sensitive about things, but you do have a point in this case. It was what it was. They still made great music and from most of the songs, the left won out lyrically most of the time, even if some songs went the other way too. It gave us the great music we have now, even if Johnny was a Republican. He definitely WAS a Republican. He made no bones about that, said it himself. So, the other stuff often does come with the territory politically.
I think even the idea of doing that would be ridiculous and I'm a liberal to the core. We don't all agree on every single thing. Even people within political parties don't agree.
Nah, fuck you. Big fan of them all, despite their beliefs, because to me, it's about the music. Yet, they were all getting along, a band, I doubt that was his intention at all. Marky told it how it was. This was common knowledge among fans even before the book, and before this interview. Johnny was a racist sack of shit with good music. Leave it there.
I seriously doubt you've fucked anything in your life other than yourself, assuming you even still possess the equipment given what everyone knows about Antifa and those sympathetic to them.
Lots of people collect military memorabilia... Joey was a big lib and Johnny was a conservative.. Marky blocked my Instagram after years of chat that even included personal texts because I slipped up and accidentally called him a rock star ! It was jokes ! Marky is a bit thin skinned. Dee Dee was my favorite Ramone. Period. Douglas Colvin was my punk rock spirit animal. I grew up in the Midwest and I saw the Ramones 27 times before Dee Dee left the band.
Don't believe everything Mark says. He talked shit about everyone. I heard first hand the shit he said about the other guys. After they retired, I met him and asked him to sign my jacket. CJ had already signed it. And Mark told me I shouldn't have CJ on my jacket because he wasn't a Ramone. At another time, me and a friend of mine were talking to him about what all the other Ramones were up to. He said Joey is just getting fat and can't sing any more. He just doesn't have good things to say about anyone. He just wants to build himself up. Even talked shit about Jerry Only and the MIsfits after he played with them. I'm a big Ramones fan but that shit just sucks. By the way, CJ and Richie are cool as shit.
Did he say that Johnny collected nazi memorabilia? I don't think he did. The booked nentioned that he collected autographs and while in Germany he thought the coolest autograph to get there was the Furher's.
I would have to cite the first amendment on this subject. He was entitled to think or believe what he wanted to. I still at 42 cannot fathom how some Americans are fine with free speech and uphold it staunchly. As long as it's their free speech.
@MemphoWrasslin1 how are we supposed to make up for racism? Letting blacks openly discriminate against whites? Is there a meter he have to fill? The answer is to stop. Stop all of it. Two wrongs don't make a right.
The biggest question here is why Marky still insists on wearing a wig, wheras CJ has embraced baldness lol. That being said, at least his is more convincing than the one Gary Numan wears
I knew JC very well...I attended his wedding...he was a good American...and a fair but hard band leader....yes JC was the leader and without him the band wouldn't have been successful...his views on worldly matters were his and his alone...live and let live...douche...
He does in his book talk about that. He talks about it quite a bit, actually. I enjoyed the book. It was well rounded and not the least bit sensationalized, like this snippet of interview in the video here.
The real racist are the interviewer's, that's all they want to talk about, they are the one's who want to keep racism alive and make it the number one topic about anything, it's very annoying.
MemphoWrasslin1 it wasn't that they wanted to give a finger to the establishment that they were sick of that they voted for that dumb ass despite knowing how deplorable he was in the hope that he would at least help them economically. now they know they were conned
@MemphoWrasslin1 oh please. i voted for obama both times and voted for trump both times. i think it's an incredibly small amount of people mad about a black president. he just wasnt a good president no matter how much the media tries to pretend otherwise
@MemphoWrasslin1 for sure there is definitely racism and will always be some, but like you said i think it's exaggerated a lot. people care about the economy and policies. im persian. and i know the iranian community mostly voted obama. we didnt like his iran deal at all or handling of iran. so many of us switched. and then we certainly didnt like the sympathizing over the soleimani killing by dems
he clearly doesn't want to hand over his bandmate in this interview, but why this resistance from the fans and this benefit of the doubt with someone who has always been attached to conservative values?
I think the most interesting thing about The Ramones is that although they inspired so many of The British punk bands in 1976 they themselves wanted what they perceived to be the exposure and success of The Bay City Rollers in 1976 Fact... They used to complain to their management about not getting this...
Joey was right on what he said !! "People drift towards liberalism at a young age, and I always hope they change when they see how the world really is."
Johnny was racist though. He frequently used the n word as a racial slur according to marky, his ex gf and his tour manager, a black and chinese bassist auditioned for the band and johnny made names for them such as “spook ramone” or “LiLi Ramone” which was used to make fun of them.. he also said many more stuff racist things. Stop pulling the “marky is calling him racist for disagreeing with him card” johnny was clearly a racist. I’m still a big fan of the ramones and respect johnny but he indeed was a racist guy.. thank you for those who read this whole paragraph!
i mean he was most respected by me and most for being the awesome guitar player who played super fast, he's gone the second he died no one needs to bring how up how racist he was or not. i like led zeppelin people talk even less about jimmy page being a satanist and liking way younger females, people listen to al green james brown even though people knew they were women beaters etc......
collecting nazi memorabilia doesnt make you a racist, they are part of history and i can understan someone wanting to own some of it but him espousing racist slurs would make him a racist, but hey nobody is perfect right?
He’s trying to be nice here.. but if you came up in that time- you had family older than you that were racists. You had friends who were racists. YOU might even have been racist.

I recently watched a video where Johnny was signing autographs...one after the other after the other, he seemed like a pretty reasonable guy, he didn't have to do that, lots of people who knew him personally liked him. This interviewer is just digging & digging trying to get a shocking answer, the big scoop to build a narrative & defame somebody he probably never knew...bad press...leave Johnny alone.

Give me a break Mike. You idiots who run around calling everyone a fascist kill me.
These days I don't believe people like Mark and Johnny would be able to work together because of today's political climate there would be a lot of infighting verbally and physically words like nazi and snowflake going back and forth and one or the other or both would leave the band

So? What would you expect...."johnny" to say. He doesn't even use his real name. Why would he care about being honest to you?
Lots of famous musicians don't use their "real" names. No need to be a Karen

But I can;t blame him TOO much, his real name is a mouthful! And it's wasn;t part of the band schtick either. But...all good Ramones rock.
Your comment is right on, I was about to post the same thing. It was a different time back then and if you didn’t live johnnys life you can’t judge.
from a sociological perspective you are correct
In NY, black people has a thousand slur names for italian people
@@paulojalaska6896 my grandparents were form NYC they had names for everyone, but had non white friends also
Let's not forget that they all grew up while leaded gasoline was still a gigantic and widespread thing, and they were in NYC of all places, which had some of the worst air pollution in the country.
You did yourself no favors with this stuff, Mark.
good and dead I meant.
They spoke crap about each other back in the days too Joey And Johnny hated each other from 1981 until joeys death in 2001 and marky and johnny hated each other
The only members in the ramones that didnt have anything against Joey was Tommy and CJ the rest of the members picked on Joey
Not to forget Richie who was very fond of Joey at his time in the Ramones, and stayed friends with him till his passing away.
RIP Johnny Ramone
I'm no sherlock holmes, but just looking at markys body language and the way he talks like it really feels like he doesnt even believe in his own words like just bounces off what joey said Interviewer "Was Johnny a racist" " *stall* talks about sardines", Interviewer again asks the same question " err you know like joey said he was a facist... so you know it all goes together..." Yeah mate you nailed it
You're nearly there. He doesn't want to slander a man he loved; aka he doesn't want to tell the truth because today it isn't "kosher". He's defending a mate, though struggling to do it. Johnny was was a full time racist and proud of it
It's in the book that I'm trying to sell so it must be true.

R.I.P Johnny
Marky basically says no but doesn't answer to sell his book. So not technically throwing Johnny under the bus but I completely blame the interviewer for trying so hard to paint Johnny like that.
Johnny used the hard r before and Marky spoke on that as well. He never ended up saying he was he just asserted how irritated it made him since he grew up in a family who preached that color didn't matter.
I mean I Don’t think Marky really wanted to go into that but was really getting cornered by the interviewer.
Marky was always more a buisnesman than anything else.
Johnny had a large collection of Reggae lps, one of his favorite was Marley and he even had a black bass player "Alan" in PIL
... I've seen black punk rockers in the 70s wearing nazi swastikas

+Andrew Ramone hi
+Johnny ramone Marky is your best friend
The KKK took Johnny's respect away
It's a pretty lame way to do so.)
What Marky doesn't seem to answer is the direct question...
Your one of the people in the comments with a decent IQ
If you hate commies then you're a racist
RIP Great Johnny Ramone
Johnny ramone was definitely not a racist, he was a sweetheart
ok john lydon lol
This video is laughable. I would be hesitant to take anything he's saying with even a grain of salt since it's pretty widely known that Marky and Johnny despised each other.

No you´re not a racist then...but saying ´the war was cool and it´s a punk thing´ is one of the most ignorant things I have read in a while. Huge disrespect for the people who actually experienced WW2, one of the most gruesome periods in our history. I know you don´t mean to be disrespectful, but please be more carefull with your words, not a ´cool´ thing to say.
War is not punk rock.
He treated poor Joey like garbage but in the end Joey got the last laugh Joey was more popular than Johnny ever were and Johnny retired in 1998 while Joey had shows around in new york until 2000 and worked on a solo album plus he was worth around 5-6 million dollars at the time of his death
Pretty sure John didn't want to do music at that point. He was very done. But yeah, both great men but Joey had a pure and beautiful soul.

He certainly has reservations on pinning the tail on the donkey.

In a world filled with perfect people, everyone would get along.

He would flip if he heard anybody say that, I am sure. He was a Republican, and did not hide it or deny it. Joey was a liberal Democrat. Not Johnny.
Both Dee Dee and Johnny had their political views on certain matters and you see the uncomfortably of Mark's views but it shouldn't be taken away at any case in terms of their music and legacy.
Joey was the left
Johnny was the right
But those were of different times.
So, the other stuff often does come with the territory politically.

it wasn't that they wanted to give a finger to the establishment that they were sick of that they voted for that dumb ass despite knowing how deplorable he was in the hope that he would at least help them economically. now they know they were conned
And he is, he's gotten more accomplished in less than a year and a half in office than Obozo in office for 8 years.
Eh who knows, Trump's politics would probably be a bit much for Johnny, he was a hardcore old school Republican.
I think the most interesting thing about The Ramones
