I bought the same ESR Trifold Smart case (though right now I’m using a “heavier” one), and it let me charge the pencil even if this was covered by a pencil cover. That’s because when the iPad case is like the Trifold (with the pencil’s side uncovered) but the pencil won’t charge, it always depends from the pencil’s cover: some may look good, but in truth they hinder the charging process; in that case you need to buy a new one - looking carefully at the description (usually the description specifies if the cover allows the pencil to charge when covered, if it says nothing it means the cover will block the pencil from charging when it’s on...and this usually gets confirmed when reading the reviews). 🙂
