  • April 18, 1990 - Bertucci's Restaurant, Cambridge, MA, US
''The interview was conducted by Bob Gulla, who was a Nirvana fan since Love Buzz/Big Cheese came out. He wrote for a fanzine in Boston called “Boston Rock”. He was happy to have gotten the chance to interview the Band, although it was an assignment for the fanzine. The first piece of writing he had published was actually his review for Bleach in the same fanzine “Boston Rock”. The equipment used was an analog tape recorder. Here’s a direct quote regarding his thoughts on the band and the interview:
“We had dinner together in Central Square in Cambridge at a Bertucci's restaurant. Kurt had a calzone and said it was the best thing he'd ever eaten. He had never had one before. So I rolled the tape while we were eating, so the interview was maybe about an hour total. They were in great spirits. We talked mainly about the new material. The surprising thing was that Kurt's attitude about the new album was such that he thought he'd lose his entire audience. Thought it was too commercial. Kurt did much of the talking. He seemed relaxed, and a little tired. He talked a lot about having no money. (I paid for dinner.) Chris also talked quite a bit, mainly about his family's heritage and how difficult it was to be on the road, Chad didn't talk much at all, but was not disengaged.”
Here’s another direct quote, I asked about the tape to see if perhaps he had a full copy of it or if he’d ever thought about releasing it.
“The tape was stolen from me after the CDNow interview. They put it up and never returned it to me. I made some money off of the interview after Kurt's death, and I felt a little guilty. I only did it because I was struggling as a writer and needed cash. I believe the full interview is out there somewhere. I know it's been transcribed. But I haven't found all of the audio in one place.”
I made sure Bob got a copy, he was elated.'' - JL

This is fascinating. Their predictions of the future were so freaky because of how things turned out... Rock n Roll will die, etc. It was also awkward hearing Chad talking because he wasn't long for the band at this point. It is weird to hear Kurt saying they want to be a bit bigger but don't care about being in all the high schools etc. A year later they are the biggest band in the world and headlining festivals.

Rock n roll didn't die. Music movements died. There's plenty of rock n roll in the underground scene, although there's not much bands who play really raw rock n roll, and the ones who do sound too digital and overall fake and crappy. My favorite current bands are really the indie dreamy pop bands, they're really the bands that are the good ones in the indie scene, and they are really great. The thing now is that there's a lot of good music, but there's no movement and real cohesion and it's all kind of scattered all over the place. That's the real problem, the lack of movement, the lack of promoted scenes, not the lack of good music. But even in the 80s, people were pretty nihilistic about music and either thought rock n roll was dead or was shit, and when Nirvana exploded with the whole alternative movement and the Seattle scene, people were genuinely surprised, and i'm sure it will happen again, probably in the next few years. Nirvana came to pound over produced digital music, and came with a down to earth, raw sound, and it took on for a couple of years, and that's exactly the state of music now, essentially voice based digital crap, and i'm sure that there's going to be a counter movement that's going to take off with down to earth, rawer music to pound that shit. It wouldn't actually be that surprising if you think about it.

@@spoonlustproductions4100 Jules, i really want to believe this, but i dont think it'll happen. this is the era of fake social media, no one cares if something is raw, real, down to earth... this generation is way too alienated by fake social media and massive publicity, the huge majority of young people dont care about being truthfull, they do care about how many likes, how popular, how many people will look at them... its even hard to say that if you dont lived before internet generation, cause the huge majority of kids today dont even realize how alienated they are. look at youtube streamers, look what is success today, look at the audience, if this generation have a beatles or a nirvana, they will dont even care, being truthfull and being popular in social medias are incompatible worlds. Actually, theres plenty really good bands, really truthfull, they have niche success, and its that. Maybe the next generation will realize how fucked is to live this narcisistc fake world of social media, maybe theyll rebel against it and put out their feelings against it, thats how punk birth. But this generation? sry, added the new fascim spread around the world, capitalism eating everything, fake social happy, all that are defended by this alienated generation, this is a lost generation that will only serve as parameter to in the future people realize how fucking damaged it is, them bring back truthfull, sincere values again into society.

@@user-lx4nr1nb9i Not the teenagers I know, hence the importance of perception. It really seems that the smartphone slash social media trend is slowly going to an end, not that it's going to disappear but it's relevance in today's world is fading. Smartphones and social media have been the huge sensations of this decade, but if you ponder on the question, they weren't really here before the begining of this decade and like all trends, probably won't be here after this decade, once again in terms of relevance. People, and in particular teenagers are sick of this age of over digitalized commercial pop music, and desperately crave something else, that's why there are so much comments like this one. But when rock and roll comes back into the mainstream, in whatever form, it won't be an essentially retro past dwelling thing, because that will never work. Kurt, Chad and Krist actually do say this in this very interview "people keep dwelling on the past because they are afraid to look forward" while mocking Led Zeppelin rip off bands. That's why those wannabe grunge assholes that you often see on the internet aren't worth shit. But a genuine, organic movement can and will eventually form, because that's how the cycle that is music works. I also totally agree with you on the rise of fascism and capitalism around the world, the intense consumerism that came in a new form with the internet, once again very similar to the 80s, something that the band talks about in this interview. It's bleak, but not all the way. We seem to have very similar opinions concerning the state of this shattered world. I'm very sick of all this shit too, but without something to hate, we have nothing to love and life would be boring.

@@spoonlustproductions4100 Thank you for pouring some hope inside me, cause tbh i dont have much about society. I really want to believe that smartphone and social media things are going down, like people realizing all this fake situation human society is but i honestly dont know about it. Maybe this new generation coming, like this little 10y gap, maybe they'll realize how fucked this is and i really hope for it. I tottally agree that the "truthfull music" of this time will come from this situation, thats why i point punk. I tottally agree that music/art is related to its own time, and i dont expect any nirvana or beattles to rise, like greta van fleet, i dont think this wanna be thing is good for anyone, for music in general, its actually another society alienation sympton. Like, blues, funk, soul, punk, kraut, prog.. every music style is directly linked to its own time, that make people feel their own time togheter, and that make people out of alienation of their bubbles... and thats the problem to me, majority society in this time dont really care even if you show the bubble to them, they just dont care. They already have all they need to share with the ones they love or the ones in their circle, if its crap, if its money gargabe, if its sexism, if its against woman or against minority, if its on trend, they dont care... they'll will dance to it and laugh and share, while all the good music is there, but is buried by this massive alienation being shared 24h day. Like, not so long ago, we had time to think alone, time to be alone, to be able to connect them... this is lost by the futilization of human relations of present time. Im glad that you have people by your side that isnt like that, and you are not like that, so yep, theres hope for a change i guess. Sry for my illiterate english and thank you for the good conversation

HAHAHA....it wouldn't require a press pass to interview me. I've been interviewed about 8 or 9 times and nobody ever required a press pass to do it. Most of them were radio interviews though. A couple of zines that interviewed me went under before the interviews were printed....those would be full of facts that remain unknown.
