      Artists shouldn't be compared, but I'd go for The Beatles as the greatest of all time, then maybe The Stones, then tied for 3rd would be Led Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd, U2, maybe Queen and a few others.

      I was serving in the military and couldn’t get leave to go to The Wall concert in 1977/78. But I got to see each of their solo tours several times each & Pink Floyd post Roger Waters for the MLOR and TDB Tour (front row seats at Giant Stadium) and most recently Roger Waters The Wall and This is Not A Drill Tour. They were equally amazing. Ran into Roger Waters near my home town and gave him directions and shook hands. True story.

    I was born in the 90s, but was lucky enough to discover a cassette with Pink Floyd on it at age 8, and they were indeed the reason why I decided to be a musician at the same age. Seeing them on the TV in 2005 was one of the clearest memories I have of my teen years, I was in a bar and when they announced "... and now ladies and gentlemen...Pink Floyd" everyone stoped speaking istantly, you could see the emotion of people in the air. It's in that moment I realised that music never gets old, expecially when after almost 25 years of listening to them each single time I get new feelings and inspiration from their songs.
    Thanks Roger, Syd, David, Rick and Nick for having influenced so deeply my life and many other people who tirelessly still listen and enjoy your music.

    I think what drew people in to pink floyd was the music then the lyrics as great as they are were secondary. David's silky voice. Richard,Nick and David deserve where they are. Roger never should left. But he did. David's guitar player crushes everyone else. Just my opinion.

      Actually Roger never left. He disbanded the band he believed he was the only custodian of (and still believes it today). The boys were able to use the pink floyd name after a lawsuit and only when rick got out of rehab. Anyway I love em all equally, (Syd included) despite the evident recent senile dementia problems of "some" of them. XD

    Pink floyd was just pure genius. Dont get me wrong i totally understand the importance of syd barrat and the fact pink floyd became what they did largely influenced by syd but the fun really started when david joined..thats when things really got going IMO..all those perfectly matched guitar pieces for each song and amazing melodies david created what a visionary he just ooozes soul in every lick! David and roger's relationship working together may have been a rocky road at times but from a music point they were the perfect collaboration. These guys were just on another level you cant compare their music with anything else...

    • @mikearchibald744
      @mikearchibald744 Před rokem +4

      Your probably showing your age or location. As Pete Townshend says, they were something to see. Bowie, Yes, Gabriel, all those british giants talked at one time or another at going to see SYD. At that point Roger and Nick could hardly play, there was the light show but as anybody talks about, it was Syd they went to see. And watch documentaries at how all these guys who later couldn't stand one another but all have a reverence and open wound for....a guy. Do you EVER remember meeting another BOY at school that you gave a halfway shit about? They were pals, friends, fun, but the way these people talk about Syd then its clear that there was something magical about Syd.
      And of course they became something different without him, and its amazing they even stayed together. The guys in Genesis talk about how they almost packed it in simply because the guitarist who was only a QUARTER of the writing team left. Thats the magical thing about Pink Floyd, its like Monty Python. Its amazing it existed, its amazing it went on the way it did, its amazing that they are even remembered. After Roger left they only did two albums. And Roger only really did three and was done by 1992. Everything about Floyd is just crazy, which is what makes them Floyd. As Ezrin said, we really don't know 'which ones Pink' because they were just an aggregate. Like The Band they were all independant musicians who somehow managed to not just put out music, but great music. Thats astonishing in a way, particularly from middle class brits, who as we've seen with other bands, usually just defer to the guy in charge.

    • @bobstringa5433
      @bobstringa5433 Před 3 měsíci +1

      Well David, that's perfectly understandable. Damn right he took offense, since (and at the same time every respect for Dave, Nick and Rick) he, Roger, wrote and created pretty much all of PF's work since Roger Barrett's departure. AND put out Amused to Death which imho is up there with the very best of PF's work. So yeah, kudos to him that he politely mentioned that he felt a little more than just a passenger. A great bassist or rhythm guitarist? No, not so much. But my god, all the great ideas he had, both musically and lyrically.... genius.

    PROPS: I’m a Stones girl buttt, Led Zeppelin (Plant & Page) plus Floyd (David & Roger) have always made me weak in the knees in a far different way than Jagger & Keith ever could!!
    I remember very vividly buying Darkside, Wish & the Wall the second each album came out and being totally blown away. To me, Floyd was the go to music when you wanted to chill and sink into being a stoner, Zeppelin was the must have when you wanted to go hard all night with your dude and the Stones were my fav to get happy and dance. Van Halen was my driving music (later replaced with U2) and Arrowsmith, Eagles or a little Guns & Roses were our everyday jam for just hanging out while having a little background noise.
    I still play all of these to this day and love them just as much as I did when I was in my teens & early 20s….all of it is the soundtrack of my life BB (before babies)!!!!
    Through my 30s & 40s I put away my rocker chick side in order to raise my family (like a lot of us did) but in my 50s & 60s, I’m back and digging through my over 400 original albums and pulling out all my old stuff and listening to it at full blast while I’m cleaning house or grilling steaks and loving every second of it just the way we used to - it all still sounds great!!

    I think it's sad when band's breakup and wake up 20 years later just to reunite together and realize that they should have never broke up. I sit here looking at different bands that made the same mistake. I was in a rock band that was going to be bigger than a lot of bands but we did one show and my band went on a Stone trip and ended up in jail. As the singer I thought we broke up. I didn't know what happened to them. Until one of the family members told me they were in prison for trying to rob a bank on acid. And that's why the people in the world today does not know my hard rock band. I go to karaoke bars and sing and the people always clap and wonder who I am. And only the people that hear me sing know who I am. Take care God bless everyone on this Earth.🤔🥂☺

    As listening Pink Floyd over 30 years.. Backbone of the concept was first Syd, I think, those songs are brilliant. But it was kind of pop music still. All the credit to great Syd Barrett with his pretty face. True rebel. But What make Floyd as it is still today, where it shall remembered, is Roger Waters. He had the vision, fracture, ambition, which made him push and push, through the albums of the 70's. All of them in the band were so talented, but I think Roger was the driving force to put these other geniuses to work. David Gilmour is almost just important, Unique guitar/vocal skills he had, he brought the pop and gentleness, I believe melodics as well. Together they made this incredible band that stays to remembered for centuries to come.

    What makes Pink Floyd.... "Pink Floyd"... is the bands unique signature theme tunes of music and their astonishing outlook and truly honest lyrics that everyone if they are totally at ease with themselves can relate to, surprisingly lots of people can write lyrics/ songs but not on a scale as Pink Floyd do, they don't hold back on anything at all, like marmite love them hate them you simply can't deny them or ignore their influence to music, their dna is like a new found blood type group that will stand the test of time for Millenniums of the future and longer, they are truly biblical and spiritual.

    Sid was a great loss. He was more visionary than the other members of the band. I love post Barrett floyd, but one wonders what they would have done if Sid had not become ill. Sid should never have taken LSD or any hallucinogens. While many people have with no long term side effects. People with mental problem ie. bipolar or schizophrenic should never experiment with drugs.
