Love how he starts to look less and less sane throughout the “quick 40 minute to 8 hour explanation”
Signature BDG antic
Like he's... Unraveling, some might say?
He do be coming unhinged, or rather Unraveled
Depends on how many phases they make it to
I think that perfectly sums up the entire experience of watching a BDG video
He absolutely nails the “guy who really likes this board game doing a crap job of explaining the rules” impression
yep
I fully believe he has been that guy before
This hurts on an emotional level knowing that guy in real life
@@bumblehoney7206 It's me. That guy is me.
as someone who worked at a board game/hobby store for 8 years: yes. it's a spot on impression.
The fact that he kept doubling back on his words just absolutely sells it for me, that’s always what I do cause I suck at explaining lol

@@EEEEEEEE Fr fr
@@EEEEEEEE well I can't argue with that
Brian forgot to mention the best combo in the game.
If you get a really good dice roll in phase 1, you can get the Chance Card that allows you to let everyone else push the boulder for you while still getting a passive +2 VP per turn like normal.
But if you wait to play it until phase 3, then you can really screw people over by stacking Chance Cards to get your passive +2 VP *and* make everyone have to push the boulder for you for the rest of the game.
This strat only requires a 112-turn setup and 20 Chance Cards in hand, so I'd say it's definitely worth it.
Omg I did that once, the game was stacked against me and I pulled that, everyone cried and I ruined family game night, my brothers still won't talk to me

One has to imagine Sisyphus' Boulder players happy
If you say "One must imagine Sysiphus happy" you get to roll twice
No 😡
Any French philosophy post Rousseau Is essentially a magazine… you rube
Only if you land on the Camus space *AND* you also have the number of luck tokens equal to the dice roll that landed you there
I forgot that these shorts just repeat, so it just kept going and going and I thought by myself, that is a really good Sisyphus-like explanation.
LMAOOO
For those who don’t know. Sisyphus is a Greek legend that a king had outsmarted the gods too many times so when they punished him they made him push a boulder up a hill utilizes it reached the top, then it would roll back down and he had to do that for the rest of eternity.
As always, there are many different interpretations of the myth. What you've outlined seems like an interpretation that Ovid put forth more than anything and ignores the fact that Sisyphus was also punished for being a terrible person in general. Some of Sisyphus's more notable crimes include murdering his guests in defiance of guest right, seducing his niece and having children with her as part of a plot to overthrow and murder his own brother, and trapping Thanatos to cheat death. Ultimately, Sisyphus was sentenced for his great hubris.
@@stevenqu3 so sisyphus was a dick, got it
Didn’t he kill his kids and serve them to the gods or something
@@stevenqu3 Seems like you decided to use the most extensive and correctively inaccurate myth since it was made almost ten years after the original.
@@flyboy3510 You have a source for that, bud? Greek myths are noted for not having definitive creation dates because of how old they are and how extensive the Greek oral tradition was vs the writing tradition, so it sounds like you made that up on the spot.
"Everyone thinks the pushing is where the real victory points are, but actually the best way to get points is to imagine that you're happy while pushing it."
E
I thought at first that this should have been a prompt for SungWon given his love of board games and talking about them, but I should have known that BDG would absolutely nail the prompt where he has to explain nonsense that's incomprehensible to anyone but himself. That's kind of his whole MO and he knocked it out of the park
so victory points exist, conceptually, but there is no way to win them and thus no way to ever win or finish the game
The opportunity to give this to Sungwon went all over! HAHAHAH
im sure dude would come up with a whole complex system of bolder rolling on the spot
Pretty sure Sam gave this to Brian because he had this series on Polygon called "Unraveled", where he'd take a deep dive into the miscellaneous trivia of a specific property. It almost always ended with BDG's descent into seeming madness as he kept trying to make sense of the byzantine lore of the franchises he's tackling.
Give it a watch, and you'll see why he got this prompt.
The thing is, if you gave it to SungWon he'd actually explain the game WELL, and that entirely misses the comedy in explaining a board game.
@@romxxii Well, true though.
@@EinDose Sungwon might improvise and make fun of his board game reviews.
The Camus expansion really makes it seem like the boulder itself is meaning enough
It's not just pushing the boulder... except, yeah, it's just pushing the boulder, really.
God bless Sam for giving us this short dopamine hit of Unraveled.
"Then in the second phase, you make a Haunt roll."
I love Betrayal at House on the Hill! And whoever revealed the boulder in the crypt is now the ancient God's emissary, ensuring the boulder's descent! xD
But can I roll the boulder into the Mystic Elevator to get it to the top floor quicker?
@@bray2964 You can, but *spoilers for Sisyphus’ Boulder: The Game* taking the boulder in the mystic elevator causes the spirit of Sisyphus to possess you, causing you to need to run all the other players over with the boulder
Okay I was thinking that he said haunt roll not hot roll I’m glad it actually was a reference to Betrayal and not just me making that up. That’s such a smart joke on BDG’s part
Now I want a reskinned edition of chutes and ladders
The whole last row is snakes
"Wait wait I don't understand...can you explain the rules to Sisyphus's Boulder from the beginning?"
"Make a haunt roll" IM DYING, now I'm imagining BETRAYAL: SISYPHUS EDITION
I would’ve liked to hear Sungwon’s take on this too since he’s so into board games- love hearing people razz on things they love lol
Brian David Gilbert perfectly captured person who's into board games but is very bad at explaining them, as a person who myself is into board games and is sometimes bad at explaining them
Nobody:
Norm: “I bet the board is spelled B-O-R-E-D.”
damn, he's bored
Oh GOD don't create portals between universes like that without considering the consequences!
It's my favorite Conan Interview

As a guy who regularly frequents a game shop, this is too accurate
It's not just a Boulder, it's a rock
Yeah, I love playing as the Pioneer ‘cause of you played your cards right, you could ride those babies for miles.
It's as if Sisyphus, himself is explaining the game. Clearly insane and manic for the opportunity to explain his afterlife to SOMEONE.
We must imagine Sisyphus happy
@Antonio Jacopo Gerevini Tough luck, better push the boulder faster next time.
Game idea, very much tilted against the player, and a tedious play: Each pusher round, you move the boulder up 1d6 spots, and boulder round, you move the boulder down 1d12 spots (1d6 is basic dice, and 1d12 is boulder-like. You start at spot 20, and you aim for spot 50.
5 terrain cards are ordered for the 10s spaces, so each 00..09, 10..19, 20..29, etc segment has either a +1, +2, -1, -2 or +0 modifier to the roll when starting there.
Chance cards get picked up and used immediately, every time you pass a 10-place (either up or down), and are either -2, -4, -10 spots, or +2, +4 spots. If you get pushed to spot 0, you start over at spot 10, or give up. Multiple people means multiple lanes and boulders, and you can use the chance cards to push a foe’s boulder down.
I’m considering a Patreon if people seem interested?

Bonus points if you can imagine Sisyphus happy
As a fellow ADHDer this is what I hear when people try to teach me how to play a game instead of showing me.
Bouldy: "..."
Yesss
How wise.
Yo, I love that game.
This actually kinda reminds me of this other board game where you have to fill a kind of vase with water, but there are holes in there, so you gotta fill in the water quicker. The goal is to completely fill the vase thingy, but I'm actually not that great at the game, so I never managed to do it.
Brian David Gilbert is absolute perfection in human form and this only solidifies that point further
It could be fun ,like you have to get the boulder to the top with good rolls to help against the the bad rolls, then their could be character powers or chance cards that can help you or sabotage the other players, the board might be a spiral or just personal tracks for every character, maybe even some round event card like add to your roll, move a step back, or even roll against another player whoever wins moves forward then the loser moves back, their could be alot of effects and characters based on the greek gods, mainly hades and the system of the underworld but still fun perhaps with a cartoony arts style similar to disney's hercules.
Except the game is "Sisyphus' Boulder". You can't win. That's the whole point.
@@en4833 a game that will last forever, like monopoly
"One must imagine Sisyphus happy."
This has the same vibes as Ben Wyatt explaining the Cones of Dunshire for the first time.
One must imagine sisyphus is happy
Watching this as a short on loop feels so meta.
Victory points are awarded on the basis of how happy you are while you’re playing the game.
This would actually kind of make a killer Mario Party map!
It may sound repetitive and grindy, but after a few weeks it's becomes a meditative exercises. Excellent mindfulness training.
After a few years it's like there is no other purpose in life and you'll find inner peace.
I think SungWon was slightly bummed that he didn’t get this prompt lol
Perfect! I can now play Sisyphus' boulder with my friends and family and what jolly good ol' time we'll have
Thanks Brian!
“Ok and then for the fourth phase you put the dice down, sit for a second, and imagine yourself in this situation, but happy”
"And the farther you push the boulder, the more victory points you earn. But here's the really cool thing, right? Once you reach 50 points, your points get reset back to 0, and you gotta start again. So there's, like, a nice dynamic where the lead is always changing and you can't get too comfy. It's great."
I love this game! I like to play by Camus rules though, where after two, maybe four decades you learn to appreciate the act of pushing the boulder up the hill
It's not a fun game, not a game that makes you happy, but one where we must imagine ourselves happy.
“Just about everything in this world is easier said than done, with the exception of "systematically assisting Sisyphus's stealthy, cyst-susceptible sister," which is easier done than said.”
The most ingenious way I can think of a Sisyphus board game is just a slick ramp up, then make the game board's squares more than 6 so that, when the piece goes up, it just slides back down.
The struggle itself towards the explanation of the game is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Brian David Gilbert happy.
was almost expecting each subsequent phase to roll at disadvantage
i love this man...the brine...
You know, explaining a board game can often feel like your pushing Sisyphus’s Boulder.
“The cool thing about this game is that it always keeps you on your toes. When you think you’re about to win, you actually get to start over”
“Explaning” almost had me there.
I would've started over.
One must imagine "Me and the Birds" playing behind this explanation...
You never win, you just get a little better each time
How did I not notice sam calling Brian Brennan at the end lmao
One would imagine Game Changers happy
Watching this on loop adds to the experience
Missed opportunity to say "You know what I am not explaining this well, let me start over from the beginning".
Oh god you’re right
Sisyphus' boulder is a great name for a board game
Bonus points if the struggle toward the heights itself is enough to fill your heart
"No wait, that's wrong. Let me start over..."
Brian trying his hardest again! Bless his heart
Brian's smile at the end
I love how the entire explanation is just shoots and ladders logic
watching how much Sam genuinely loves this show makes it
It's just chutes and ladders, but the last 12 spaces of the board are ALL chutes back to the beginning.
Holy heck that explanation was like an acid trip 😂😂😂
One must imagine sisyphus winning game night
These shorts are such a good marketing strategy that they convinced me to buy a dropout subscription
I’m just sitting there “so..I’m more of a kinesthetic learner….can we….could we just play?….no?…he’s still going”
One must imagine monopoly man happy
I find that the best way to learn a board game is explain the goal of the game and the basic parts. Then explain as you play
Or to just do a mock round of game play
Really feeling that Brian was drawing deeply from being on Polygon Overboard for this and every time Clint or someone had to explain the game.
Brian David Gilbert is an _intergalactic treasure._
One must imagine Sisyphus playing a board game
The boulder gets all the victory points
As a board game lover this is absolutely hilarious

Surprised at the end he didn't say. "you know qhat? Let me start over-"
My friend explaining destiny 2 raid mechanics to me:
It feels just like something he would make one of those videos about after like 6 months of isolation with the game
Brennan would have KILLED in this bit, but this was pretty funny.
Listening to how he tells it I have an idea of the kinds of games he might play
The hardest part is to imagine Sisyphus happy.
I love how these people basically know every single board game and movie ever lol.
"Let's just do a few practice rounds you'll catch on"
That last shot of Brian's face is just beautiful.
how fast and far you can roll the bolder in a set time limit
that game rocks hard.
"This prison, to hold me?"
Is this where they got the idea for the time loop episode
This actually made me think of a Sisyphus bored game.
-you push a button that makes a little Sisyphus go up with a boulder (everyone gets their own Sisyphus)
-you roll a die to determine how many times you press the Sisyphus button
-as Sisyphus moves up it gets steeper and harder to control
-who ever gets the highest without letting their boulder roll down wins
This is what I sound like explaining anything
Sisyphus's boulder:
The objective of the game is to roll a dice and try to get Sisyphus to the goal of balancing the boulder on top of the mountain so he doesn't have to do it once more again.
it uses these random dice from another board game I found under my couch and for some reason, they are red and white and clear instead of black, white opaque .
Here, there are these chance cards to help Sisyphus balance or roll the boulder on top but those are optional if you want a harder game
if you balance the boulder on top and Sisyphus no longer has to keep pushing it, you automatically win the game.
