      Probably reduced situational awareness due to looking for where he’s supposed to go than at the road. And if he’s not doing a lot of driving tasks automatically yet, that increased driver task load really makes the probability of an accident go way up. (Yeah, I’m analyzing it like an aviation incident but I was fortunate enough to have a dad who was a certified flight instructor to teach me how to drive!)

    #15 4:56 While it's laudable to stop to help people after an accident (especially if you have dashcam footage of it), it's recommended to stop *past* the accident and walk back to help. Don't stop directly before it. The thinking is that there's a high probability other traffic could crash into unexpectedly stopped cars. If you stop just before the accident, that will be your undamaged car involved in another accident. If you stop past an accident, it will be the already-damaged / possibly-totaled car involved in the new accident.

      The driver obviously fixated on traffic approaching from the right (since he was turning left), and forgot about traffic coming from the left. An unfamiliar route absolutely contributes to that. Your mind gets overloaded by all the new sensory input it's trying to process, making it easier to forget to do something (double-check to the left).
      There have been airliner accidents attributed to this (sensory overload). And it's resulted in cockpit alarms being programmed so that minor alarms are automatically silenced if a really important alarm ("Terrain, terrain. Pull up. *whoop* *whoop* Pull up.") needs to sound. That way the crew hears only the important alarm, instead of having it drowned out in a sea of other alarms.

Because why take you time when you have to constantly beat the other person.

    3:20: Pulling out in front of traffic forces them to guess; and the outcome depends on whether the vehicle that failed to yield sees their own error at the last minute and halts. That's why the vehicle with the right-of-way guessed right, they were hoping the SUV would notice them and stop.
    Another guess would be to go left, behind the vehicle. But that's a lot more risky when there's oncoming traffic.
    The last guess would be to do nothing. But mathematically, doing nothing is never the best choice... because you cannot expect to change the outcome of an imminent collision, by not changing your behavior.
    Ultimately, the left-turner is fully at fault for failure to yield, regardless of which evasive maneuvers the victim proceeding through-traffic takes.

    • @solandri69
      @solandri69 Před 5 měsíci +3

      Doing nothing (continuing straight in this case) also carries the risk that police / your insurance will cite you for not trying to avoid the accident. So it's better to do *something* so you can claim you tried to avoid the collision. Even if it turns out you would've avoided hitting if you'd continued straight, and your evasion actually resulted in the collision. At least that way the person violating right of way is 100% responsible.
