Wow what a run Colorado had in 89-90 I was living in Denver at the time and remember this game well. Buffs were never the same after coach McCartney.
It was an incredible game for Colorado. I actually got tickets from a NU alum. Right after the this season I got season tickets which I still have to this day.
I'm from Alabama, but I remember this game and Colorado's 1989 and 1990 teams - what a run for a team struck by tragedy, losing Sal Aunese. Of course, Bama and Colorado squared off in 1991 in the Blockbuster Bowl. Also, I got to hear Coach McCartney preach at a Promise Keepers meeting in Birmingham in 1997 - a great man. Would love to see Colorado return to the football elite.
***** Pete, thank you! I probably watch too much football, and I will admit that I did when I was growing up. My father was the athletic director for the B'ham city schools and also grew up with Bobby Bowden and is still a good friend of his today, so I pulled for both Bama and FSU growing up. Colorado had some exciting teams during that era - hard to forget Darian Hagan, Bienemy (sp?) and the I-Bone attack. Hope you are well!
What a great fan of the game! This made my day. I've been a buffs fan since birth and was too young to remember this game but I do hope we can get back to that level of play. I believe they can do it in time. Go Buffs and good luck to bama in the meantime. Thanks for being a good guy sir
+ajb868686 You are probably busy, but I think that you can find several of their games from 1989-90 on CZcams. You may remember Bama and Colorado played in the 1991 Blockbuster Bowl, which was a great game. One of my favorite was a Colorado-Tennessee game that ended in a 31-31 tie at the beginning of the 1990 season. Thanks for you kind words and I'm sure you are as well. I just love good college football and for me, the good ole days are probably the 1988-1994 seasons, which I followed religiously while in elementary, middle school and high school. Take care!
Sorry, I don't get the same warm/fuzzies about those C.U. teams. Sure, Sal was the focus point, with Grandpa McCartney's sealed locker and all, but especially in 1990 , without Darian Hagan's great-great talent, 5 downs at Mizzou and a phantom Flag against Notre Dame, C.U. couldn't claim their one and only half championship. Plus, Gdowski almost beat em in 1989.
Incidentally, we now know that Darian Hagan would've been a Cornhusker, but he was Crip, and couldn't wear Red back in Compton. Go figure.
@@jamesb7651 you're an idiot. Lmao. Go figure.
Darian Hagan was the best option quarterback I ever saw. The 1994 Colorado football team was the best of the McCartney era.
must not of watched very much Sooner football then
You must not have watched many OU or NU games. They each had about 9 QBs each better at the option than Hagan.
Must not have watched tommie Frazier
James Montagna You never saw Tommie Frazier?
He was great, but Tommie Frazier, Jemelle Holliway,& even Dee Dowis were damn good. Kordell Stewart couldve been a phenominal duel threat, but they kind of didnt let him run much. I remember this game though, as a 13yr old, finally slaying the Nebraska dragon to win the Big 8. And next yr was even better, in horrible weather in Lincoln. After we cussed Bienemys 4 fumbles, he redeemed himself.
And '94 had unbelievable talent. As much offensive talent, as any team ever. The Miami teams of the early 00s, had the most NFL talent-on both sides. But nobody remembers CU's '94 offense. Cuz they didnt even win their conference. Unfortunately, we had to play in Lincoln, vs a team that would turn into 1 of the best ever, the next year. '94 Nebraska was great, but I still think we couldve taken them. Kordell always choked vs Nebraska. And '95 Nebraska, was the best team I ever saw-pre BCS,& playoff. Still 1 of the best ever, but a couple teams since were right with them. A couple of the Alabama teams, USC that was 1 play from a 3peat, maybe Texas who beat them, Deshawns Clemson team,& LSU last year. But definitely the Miami team that got screwed out of a repeat vs Ohio St.
Colorado dedicated the season to their quarterback Sal Aunese, who died September 23, 1989. They went 11-0 during the regular season and won the Big Eight conference.
and five downs.
That 5th down was a year later (1990).
Is it Colorado’s fault that the refs screwed up? If the same happened to Nebraska, I’m sure Husker fans would find a way to justify.
@@jondubb35 Actually they admitted they knew it was already 4th down, but Mccartney didn't know what play to run so he had him spike it since it still showed 3rd down. This was in the 30 for 30. Their own players admitted it. If the refs would have had it right, Colorado would have been screwed and wouldn't have been able to get a good play called in time which would have been their 2nd loss along with a tie. Not a NC team. Nebraska didn't even have a loss in any of their 5 NC's so they don't have to worry about justifying anything.
Always one hater or things, and can't even get the date right!
Teared up there when that letter was read. Amazing times.
I remember this game. As a Husker fan living in CO, it was upsetting to watch NU lose. However, well-played game, and the CU story in 89 was really something. Nebraska was actually pretty good in 1989 and could've easily won but for Jeff Campbell's returns, they were maybe even as good as CU. The next year, the Buffs were much, much better. I actually think Colorado's resurgence played as much a part as anything for Nebraska's recommitment to recruiting in the early 1990s.
We
...wow what good time for college football. I was only 18 the fall of 1989. Good memories.
Great stuff
Though Nebraska's main rival is Oklahoma, Nebraska also have a really good rivalry with Colorado in the Big 8 and the Big XII North Division. The two teams had a great rivalry in the Big 8 and Big XII, esp. in the 80s when the Buffaloes starting to get really good.
You are gifted very good video....
How is that Richard Bell Reception not on every College Football Highlight Film from the 90s?!?
If ONLY you could upload the whole game? AND, of course the 2001...62-36 CU win which I have on video...will be uploading it here soon. R.I.P Sal AND the Big Eight...

Glad to see this series being renewed for 2018/2019. I am predicting a clean sweep by Nebraska for the series. GBR!
oh sorry
lol. haha
Buffs 1 and 0
This prediction has aged worse than Joan Rivers in the last 2 years.
Sweep but for the buffs lol
It's gonna happen again ! 2018 NCAA Champs Colorado
Osborn all butt hurt in losing and did not vote for Colorado in the coaches poll after CU beat Notre Dame in the Orange bowl.
Notre Dame won the Orange Bowl against Colorado after this game, didn’t they?
It was the next year when Colorado won.
NU QB is no good.
There you have it folks. The only highlight in the history of Colorado Buffalo football. Outside of this one game the Colorado Buffaloes have simply stunk it up.
