On February 7th, 2015, I travelled to a small island in the Northwest corner of Washington State. Orcas Island, the largest of the San Juan Islands, is a beautiful, serene land mass with rolling hills, rugged mountains and lush old growth forest. On this day, the clouds opened up in true Washington State fashion and dumped rain throughout the 30+ mile course that winds its way throughout Moran State Park and up to the top of Mt Constitution (the island's highest point). Needless to say, it was an incredibly sloppy & rewarding day for all the athletes that toed the starting line.
Many thanks to Rainshadow Running (James, Kerri, Matt, Gretchen & the incredible volunteers) for allowing me to tag along and follow the hundreds of athletes that took on the arduous day. This was the 10th anniversary of the Orcas Island 50k and here's to 100 more years!
Reading the stats of the race on paper does not do this course justice. Just to give you an idea of why this is considered one of the tougher 50ks in the Northwest, here are some of the 2015 stats:
Nearly 9000' of elevation gain (Across 3 major climbs)
241 finishers / 34 DNF / 44 DNS
At least 10 stitches
2 puncture wounds (both legs)
1 broken limb
Number of mud-free runners: Zero.
MUSIC: Ginger Runner - Powerline (available on all major online music retailers)

Train Hard. Race Harder. Party Hardest. - Sport
TGR, I first saw this video at the beginning of this year and was captivated. I saw there was a lottery and patiently waited for the window to open. 7/23 I put my name in the hat and expected nothing to happen and I'm thrilled that I was picked and I will be one of two people from Texas to run in the 2018 event. I watch this every day for inspiration and I'm thankful you documented the event the way you did.
Your production and editing gets better every time. I feel like I just watched a video done by a full team with a big budget. This is really amazing considering it's you, a DSLR, a GoPro, and a Mac. One thing you could add are some shots from above. Get yourself a drone.
I am currently training to run the oldest road race in North America on the 29th of march. This just pumped me up for today's and tomorrow's run! Thanks Ginger!
who even has the nerve to dislike any of his videos ... its astonishing ... lol .. all your vids are top notch my man keep it up
I always look forward to these mini visual masterpieces! Keep up the great work Ethan!
Thanks Alex!
TheGingerRunner and, man, four years later they're still great. Good quality 🙌🏻👣
Your videos have provides me with tons of motivation. Thanks to you i'm able to finish my first FM with smile on my face while hearing ginger grinds :)
Now I just want to go run! Great film ginger, looks like a great race and beautiful place.
This has to be my favorite race video of yours to date. Absolutely gorgeous.
I like this video so much... the man who welcome every finisher is incredible. Trail like a family!
Ethan, I know it was tough not racing this year but I think you really changed everybody at that race and inspired them to keep pushing and finish strong. I am 15, and you have definitely inspired me to do something like this for about a year and a half now, and I am now already training for my first 50k which will be in 2016. Thanks for getting me interested;)
Great movie! Lived in Seattle for 15 years but before I became an ultra runner. I've just added this race to my bucket list...
@TheGingerRunner and @MileLongLegs this is my fourth or fifth time watching this film. With your behemoth films like WDGTD, ADO, and AtE it's hard to remember that you have dozens of shorter films that have JUST as much if not the same amount of passion and quality. Thought of watching this film again since this morning I had a climb that was legit at like, a gnarly 40-45 degree incline and went on for like 500 or so feet. Oh and also because my playlist just happened to finish OhHiOjai and started playing Powerline.
What a way to start off my morning...Absolutely loved it...
Wonderful film! Thanks for all your time, effort, and love of trail running! I've got to add this one to my bucket list!
Thanks again for an awesome video! I got to watch this moments before a big race, and it's going to help me push through it! Thanks Ginger Runner for these amazing videos!
Beautiful film! Orcas Island looks like a true gem of a race in the PNW. Also, wonderful music. I felt it was a perfect complement to the visuals. I look forward to adding it to my long run soundtrack tomorrow. Now only if I was running on Orcas Island while listening to it...
Thanks Jonathan! And go kick tomorrow's run's ass!
You never disappoint, Ethan! What a beautiful area!
Awesome movie. Thanks for making and sharing it. I ran my first marathon last weekend (Napa Valley) and your movies and reviews have been a source of motivation
Lovely movie. I dunno how I missed this one!!
Another amazing and well put together film Ethan, they keep getting better and better! Your doing a great job, keep it up
Your films are always fabulous, but this one in particular has blown me away! You should absolutely offer (and charge handsomely!) to do some consulting for those of us who lack your natural abilities in filming these kinds of events.
AMAZING!!!! I've been to orcas island but didn't know they had a race like this. Definitely going to be adding this to my short list of courses to run.
Always look forward to these videos! Thanks Ethan keep it up
Always look forward to your movies. Definately get better everytime. Congrats on your Gorges films acceptance
Loved, loved, loved this! You are uber talented (as all true Gingers are!) Thanks for making this.
This was pure pleasure and such inspiration watching, man! You are getting so good at this. Keep it up! 👍💪
Another great film by Ethan! Thank you!
Beautiful video, Ethan. Also such a great track to go along with it; I'm sure you derived inspiration from a trying day out there for the runners to write it.
BEAUTIFUL! Just BEAUTIFUL!

Congrats Ethan, once more! .. another great work!
Keep up the great work Ethan, thanks for everything you do. Awesome.
Cinematographic master piece. Motivating and fun to watch.
And oh man, those climbs were KILLER !
So cool, can't get enough of these awesome videos!
GR great clip and music. You made me want to jump up off this couch put on my runners and into the the trails. Keep up the great work!
Awesome film Ethan! Very inspirational, we can't wait to make a video for our Shangri-La Marathon & Ultra race this April. You should come check it out, it's an epic mountain race with 1000 meter climb in the first 5k leading to breathtaking sights of the Meili Snow Mountain in Shangri-La.
This reminds me of the nature in the north of Sweden, beatiful 🥰
Great Job Ginger! Once again you fail to disappoint!
Thank you, John :)
I enjoyed this one so much more than I thought I would. I thought I would miss the GR commentary throughout (and I did a little) but as a stand alone video you captured the race, atmosphere and community involved really well. As usual, you have left me with the strong desire to go hit up some trails!
I don't think I have seen a Ginger video without THE Ginger in it.
Strange without seeing you in it!
Your best yet Ginger......awesome!!!!!!!!
Gorgeous film, as always.
Always Amazing. Always Inspirational. Thanks for sharing!
Fantastic!! Another great vid Ethan. Great music.
@TheGingerRunner, this is so funny, just found your channel and I used to live on this island, where it seems like no one has been! Great channel, keep up the great vids!
You captured some great shots. Hope the guy that took a header over the log was ok. I've enjoyed watching all your videos. We all appreciate everything you do for the running community and the time and effort that goes into making these videos. Thank you!!
Love your work man. I noticed how you time the claps with your music towards the end, that had to be fun to edit. I'm glad I subscribe to your channel! Keep them coming Ginger!
Way cool! Love the new touches!
Spent 16 minutes hellachillin' with the Ginger, MLL, and his fam on Orcas Island. And all for the low, low price of 99cents! Sure, I had to skip a dose of caffeine, but hanging with Ethan (and friends) is a cleaner, better buzz. So I ask, I encourage fellow members of the Ginger Runner Nation to skip that mocha latte fufu or at least downsize, buy the "Behind the Scenes" and help support the Ginger in his endeavors and the community that his work serves!!!
Really beautiful little film, I loved it!
So beautiful!
The music, the filming ahhhh so beautiful! Loved watching every min of it! :D
Great job as always Ethan, your film has a cool vibe and flow to it!
As an lotr fan, all I can think of with all those running in the woods is "Elvessss!"
Will run my first half-marathon in a few days and your videos inspire me to keep going! :)
You do such a great job with your films. I use them to motivate me to get out the door this winter in Cambridge Massachusetts. Thank you.
Great video! Power Line looked revolting!! 👍👍
Waiting for the behind the scenes to become available in the UK, 'I'd buy that for a dollarrrrrr' ...
Excellent as always!
Nicely filmed and edited. I really enjoyed watching that.
Awesome!! Great work Ethan!
Best yet, nice work Ethan
Amazing! Great race, man! And beautiful song.

Great filming. Thanks for this.
Thank you, amazing film...
That looks so smooth! Really nice trails, great work!
Ginger Runner, Orcas island film was awesome! Thank you so much for all the films and sights you bring to those of us who cant travel too much, but know where to go when the opportuity comes...and of course, awesoem laces to run!!! What is the best way to help support all the great projects you do?
-A Phenomenally appreciative fan...
Love this course!!
Wow. Very nice. Great mixture of capturing excitement of the racers and the atmosphere of the race and it's setting.
Just awesome!
Really enjoyed this.
I noticed one of the runners was wearing the 'buzz lightyear' hydration pack lol
You were right.
It does look a bit silly.
-Great video btw! Well edited with lovely music, as always. :)
What absolutely beautiful trails! And is that the race director high fiving everyone at the finish line? Seriously, made my eyes well up. Hope they keep putting on the race for many years to come, because I HAVE to go one day.
First time commenter, but loved this like every one of your films. A slightly different feel to it, hope you got something out of it despite not being able to run yourself :)
Beautiful job!!!
Your videos get better and better man.
Amazing! Thank you!
Great film! Keep up the great work!

Thanks Ethan. Great video and lovely, muddy race for the bucket list :)
Great great movie very inspiring as always. U gave given me the push to attempt my 2nd 50k in 4 weeks time.
Incredible. It looked difficult and fun at the same time.
That's exactly what I was hoping to convey :)
Great video as always! Loved the irony that someone you focused on had that orange mud quiver deal from last weeks review. 😉
I've only watched videos up to 4k, man this is some next level stuff, 50k
Looks like a Gr wrap at 7:03, nice!
Beautiful.
