  • “It’s important I have a stock check of where we are and what we could do about it. Because the enemy is very clever. The enemy always looks at places that we’re not.”
    Defence secretary Ben Wallace tells #TimesRadio he's working to "ramp up production" of ammunition to continue supplying Ukraine. He also pledges to share what intelligence he can about potentially mysterious objects in UK airspace.

      Wallace was asked if he was interested and the answer was thankfully no. He's far too important to the survival of Ukraine. His latest initiative the UK will be the first country to supply long range weapons to Ukraine, the UK will start training Ukrainian pilots on 'standard NATO jets'., as announced by Sunak. Keeps the ball rolling and embarrassing other countries.Given his abilities and experience, I suspect he has good links with the USCOS Milley et al and may well be prompted in directions the US wants Europe to go.Just saying.

      Britain has spent billions on AJAX & Boxer programs but we still don't have a single working vehicle from either program.
      We don't have enough ammunition to fight a war for longer than two weeks.
      We can't produce anywhere near enough ammunition to fight a war.
      It has a been a full year of fighting in Ukraine and we haven't built anymore production capacity, so we are having to tell Ukraine not to shoot so much.
      Why didn't we invest in ammo production a year ago instead of waiting until we run out to recognise the problem?

    So the idea of training Ukraine on Western operations, strategy tactics and operational level maneuvers, is all fine and okay if Ukraine had the tools to implement such a doctrine. One of the reasons we do not use an ammunition heavy doctrine is precisely because we have certain tools that we are denying Ukraine. This includes long distance reach, on the operational and tactical level like for example the use of ATACMS. And the fact that we wouldn't be limited by borders when we did use these weapon systems. But the biggest system that we are not giving Ukraine and have bent over backwards not to give them, are aircraft. We should have been ramping up training and the appropriate weapon system a year ago. Even if we went with a hodgepodge of different weapon systems like for example using a typhoon, F-16, or the Gripen, we should have just like the ammunition been working on this a year ago. We should have already right after the invasion started started laying foundations for new factory for XYZ aircraft. Another one for anti-air systems both longer range and shorter range, including tactically efficient anti-air. Pushed our industries to create the capacity for long-term ammunition use the scale of which has been shown to us during NATO exercises never mind the real world case of Ukraine... This has been a failure in long-term thinking and is the reason why the Russians specifically Putin think they can outlast us

    • @tonysu8860
      @tonysu8860 Před rokem

      I completely disagree with your assessment.
      Regarding manned aircraft, any additions would suffer the same fate as the existing and past in the Ukraine war as long as ground based air defenses (particularly the S-300 employed by both sides are so dominant. Until something can be done to suppress and destroy the opposing air defense, manned aircraft can't be flown in those areas else would suffer the fate of all those who came before. Better to send Ukraine surface to surface missiles, something like the HIMARS and various artillery that have already been sent to Ukraine or drones like the TB-2 that are somewhat harder to detect, track and destroy than manned aircraft.
      Your other suggestion to send longer range weapons would not have as much effect as you might believe. Already, HIMARS and similar have enough range to destroy targets within about half a day's or a full day's transport to the front (Assuming the HIMARS would launch from near the front). That's already pretty significant in degrading Russian ability to keep their troops supplied and to swap out troops. What effect would there be to have greater range? Well, there might be a few more targets. It might be a bit harder still for Russians to re-supply. But I don't know that the balance of power would change.
      If Ben Wallace wasn't clear, the point he was making is that Russian doctrine is the result of having a big supply of inaccurate artillery. When the Russians want to advance, they pulverize the other sie with massive amounts of artillery fire until there's nothing left to defend, and only then send the troops forward to occupy the totally destroyed ground. This doctrine requires massive amounts of artillery and moves forward only a few inches or meters at a time. West doctrine doesn't pulverize the other side before advancing, it's based on weakening the other side by denying food, ammunition and weapons, then breaking through so you can attack the enemy from behind. This type of fighting relies on high mobility and fighting smart, and less brute force destruction.

He's the best Minister of Defence we've ever had, I appreciate the way he makes regular press updates to the public and the way he speaks frankly, and also his sense of humour. Great all round guy. Pity there's not much Ministers and politicians like him. You can tell he genuinely cares about keeping the British public updated at every step and is passionate about the job he does which is a very important one...
    The UK has been leading the way in Europe and in NATO in general in arming Ukraine, and as a direct consequence of that has faced continued nuclear threats and provocations from Russia which are alarming to the British public, especially when we see Russian nuclear armed battleships sailing close to British territorial waters or nuclear armed Russian war planes flying close to British airspace..and also open debates on Russian State TV advocating a nuclear strike on London by Moscow in response for Britain's efforts at NATO's escalation in arms supply used for an attack on Russian territory, or across the border at Russia itself, which under Russian first-use nuclear doctrine, a nuclear response is fully justified. Russian government officials are openly advocating for and making the case for a nuclear response to the UK.
