Testing Different Types of Salt in Cold Process Soap | How to Add Salt to Cold Process Soap

- I’ve already used pink himalayan salt in soap. My husband, Silent J in J & W Soaps, loves it. However, I kept hearing other soapers who didn’t recommend it. They stated it was too scratchy. I never realized it was too scratchy since I don’t typically rub the bar directly against my skin unless I’m washing my face, and I do have to be careful not to scratch myself with the Himalayan salt soaps. I always lather up in a washcloth in the shower. I decided I needed to test different salts.
Results of this test:
I used the soaps directly on my arms so I could feel the amount of scrubbiness each soap provided.
~*~The Himalayan salt I used is a fine salt, but it is still really coarse-feeling in soap. I wouldn’t recommend using it directly on your skin other than your hands or places that aren’t super-sensitive or prone to get scratched up.
~*~The sea salt was definitely much less coarse-feeling, but it still provided a good amount of scrubbiness. I think this would be more appealing for most people who like salt soaps and want exfoliation as well. My husband still prefers the Himalayan salt, because he likes the abrasiveness of it.
~*~The iodized table salt provided little if any exfoliation. I couldn’t feel the salt at all. I think if someone is looking for a hard, long-lasting bar, but they don’t like the exfoliation or scrubbiness, this would be right up their alley. I also felt like the lather felt a little different on this one. It almost seemed to feel creamier.
~*~All three soaps seem to have a similar longevity with use. Compared to other cold process soaps I make, I feel like these last a little longer. When the soap is almost used up, you have a little soap stone that still lathers well as opposed to a soft center than seems to disintegrate or fall apart. I think salt soaps are the bees knees.

That was a good experiment. I use Himalayan Pink Salt, that too when I get custom order. Other salts not tried yet. Anyway read your results from the description. TFS. Stay safe.🌹

What about non iodized table salt. I ran out of sea salt. Did you notice a difference?
It was one of the smoothest textures. I couldn’t tell a difference on performance or shelf life, just texture.

I just love salt soaps! I've had a couple of great questions asked already.
-These soaps are 80% coconut oil. I think the fact that it's not quite 100% coconut oil along with the added salt in the volume is what keeps these from overheating during oven processing
-I am very mumbly in the end, but I put all my findings in the description.
Through this I learned that I really like sea salt much better than Himalayan salt. Everyone has their own preference. What's your favorite salt soap or other type of soap?

Don't mean 2 b unkind but ur paradigm is shakey. Perhaps if u took any popular salt recipe, sin color/fragrance and substituted out all the diff kinds of salt u might get more accurate findings. Also ur video showed one salt with iodine but u mentioned table salt. There are 2 kinds of "table" salt. One has iodine and the other does not. Your pattern of speech is very pleasant. Easy 2 understand and follow along.🌷
Thank you for your feedback. I did use just one recipe, but I needed to color code them. I've never had the fragrance affect the performance or feel of a soap, and that's why I used different scents too.
I had to go back to the video to see. It shows iodized table salt at the beginning. You are absolutely right though. Not all table salts are iodized.
It's not a definitive or scientific study, but it did help me gain good insight on the textures different salts bring to the soap. I had also previously found conflicting information on using iodized table salt in soap forums and thought I'd try it out. It cured well and worked fine. It was not my favorite, but mostly because it was too fine. I actually haven't used iodized table salt since. 😃
