- In my ongoing effort to procrastinate fishing, ultimates, diadem, and all the other things that people keep trying to convince me to do, I've finally ended up stranded on Endwalker's perhaps most forgettable content - Island Sanctuary! So let's set up our workshop for the next two weeks and maybe get some achievements, I don't know.

gegeruju's story is that he was a 1.0 retainer (retainers in 1.0 were presets with specific names and appearances, though you still got to give them a nickname, and Gegeruju was one) who's employer never came back after the calamity and he made enough money selling the assets to become a very wealthy land owner.
(keep in mind that this isn't *100%* canon. They reused names and models of the 1.0 retainers, some of which have enough dialog to conclusively say that they were definitely not the retainer in question, for example Eijika Tsunjika of the eureka questline. But I want to believe that's why Gegeruju is a rich idiot, he didn't really earn that money)

It's funny that most people don't respect between MSQ and some events, we did more quests for Gegeruju in ARR than pretty much anyone else but Minfilia. His wife spends plenty of her time on eyecandy too, it's all fair for that little pair of weridos.

Of course I check my Island. I had to converted it into a library and research center since Old Sharlayan won't make me an Archon.

My advice as a max level/rank island sanctuary player with everything except the manual gathering achievement-
Focus on leveling/rank, then at max join the discord server that has the bot that tells you what to make

Yes I have checked my island, every day since it dropped. I'm on track to hit 2 million cowries before Dawntrail so when you buy all those rare dyes for your newly granted dye channels, you can thank me for supplying you with your Dragoon Blues, Pearl Whites, Gunmetal Blacks and so on. You're welcome.
I have _four of them_ because I'm addicted to pearl white dye. (Also because health problems keep me out of savage / extreme these days, so had to find something to fill the time.)
Edit: I made a lot of gil off the mount tokens before the market inevitably crashed... Which was probably partially my fault. Sorry.

i kept up with my island every major update so i could get it to max rank each time, and while i haven't been fully filling up the market schedule every week now that i'm done, i do juuuust enough to get the weekly amount of Felicitous Tokens so i can add on to my ever-growing stack of gacha boxes in my inventory (right next to my Grand Company Materiel Containers)
It may not be the optimal way to level up my island, but holy crap do I spend a lot of time just mindlessly running in circles picking flowers, breaking rocks, and felling trees and just having something off to the side (like this video!). It's just so relaxing. The only "chore" is taking care of the animals and the farm, and then I just go picking. Unless it starts to rain, then I go hit up my cabin and plop on some tunes and just chill and watch the rain fall. It's freakin' perfect for me.

i check my island twice a week, and recently had like 500k cowries (after having already gotten all the glams/mounts/misc dyes), and spent the rest on materia to penta my gear lol once it gets into the 'idle' stage, there's really no need to check it daily imo
when needing smth to watch in the bg, i'll usually put on a long vod ranging from nature documentary to 'how do invisible walls work in mario 64' lmao
I'm still sitting on nearly 1mil cowries and 2 spare mounts from the random boxes. Thought about liquidating all those into gil with buying dyes (On my Server 1 sold dye could pay for 5-7 materia, thats why I'm not buying those), but after my gf constantly reminds me, that we get two color glamouring, I'm still holding onto my cowries. Dye prices probably go up, or down because a lot of people have the same idea. Now my island is just a hoarder place like my retainer.. Still havent figured out if cowries cap on 999.999 like those stupid vouchers, which cap at 150 for no reason..

There is already a collectable vendor with the backstory of a vicious capitalist: Rowena. Not only is she portrayed as such in most of her cutscenes, her capitalistic tendencies reflect in gameplay. The custom deliveries pay out big in scripts. Meanwhile, all the regular crafting and gathering collectables are traded in to Rowena for about half of what you'd get from a custom delivery, and only one type of script at once. Not to mention her outrageous prices on Earthbreak Aethersand; 300 purples for 1!? She's cut throat. Only thing is she does have a soft spot for orphans, so I guess she doesn't meet all the criteria.

@@moonelfe No, but all the Custom Deliveries are subsidized by Rowena. That's how they can pay you scripts when Rowena is practically the inventor and sole banker of scripts.

Opal is technically a glass like obsidian and often is found in petrified wood so mining it out of a tree make sense :D

I didn't mind the Island at all as I didn't have any real expectations or desires for it. YoshiP said repeatedly it wasn't going to be Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing so I believed him. *shrug*
I visited my island regularly until I finished it and got all of the rewards I wanted from it, and now it just exists as an outdoor photoset and an easy source for Pearl White and Gunmetal Black dyes (as those are the two colorus I use most).
I didn't know what I wanted and kept my expectations minimal, but still just didn't enjoy what it is. The content just doesn't vibe with me unfortunately
The number of people who convinced themselves it was going to be this super deep Harvest Moon-like side game that would also double as instanced housing and then threw a fit when the content they invented in their minds didn't match with reality continues to astound me.
It was just so much missed potential and baffling design choices, specially in UI bloat. It was stardew with only the boring parts of running in circle and clicking items.
Like when they said you can grow crops: "but not housing crops!!", they could've literally fixed years of complaints about needing estate to cross*reed plants.
Ability to add housing items? Crops? Striking dummy? House itself!? "No not those!!"
They could've literally added small housing plot to be put down and bam, housing fixed.
Or add submarines so people wouldn't hoard literal wards for FC houses for gil

@@SurrealLeaf But that's just, like, your opinion, man. YOU call it boring, but I know a lot of people who think that's the best part of Stardew Valley. I also know a lot of people who really like Island Sanctuary. A lot of people hate crafting, but there are just as many people where that's the only part of XIV they care about.
Same with the housing stuff. Not everybody WANTS instanced housing. Especially in JP, a lot of people like the limited nature of the housing and also like having real neighbourhoods with real people instead of isolated houses in a robot void. And giving everyone unfettered access to submersibles would completely break the feature and instantly make it worthless, which is arguably worse than the current situation. Same with housing crops. Striking dummies can be found outside of literally every major city in the game, there's no need to have your own private dummy. Hell, since you have to go to Aleport before you can teleport to your island, having dummies there would be LESS convenient than going to most of the overworld dummies.
It's fine that you don't like a feature, or a feature's implementation. But you not liking something is not the same as that thing being bad. All your other complaints are still just being mad at Thing A not being Thing B, where Thing B is something you yourself completely invented and the devs never even implied would ever exist, and in many cases have outright said they will not do. Just saying "Island Sanctuary is boring, give me more housing" is no more helpful or constructive than those people who say "Delete crafting and housing and make more raids".
The great thing about island is that you enjoy it how you want. I gathered during my long dps queues so it kept me occupied

If you enjoy documentaries and infotainment, I found a few channels to watch in the background about old Disney parks/ properties, etc. Defunctland is what the channel is. Even goes over old TV shows and their histories. It helped me on long nights when my son was a baby and I would be up at all hours of the night with him.
My island's animals are all named after my old friends who I don't see in game anymore.

My go-to series for long grinds is Drawfee, a hilarious youtube show where four pro artists draw based on ridiculous prompts. It's especially good because, since drawing is a whole process, you don't need to pay specific attention to the video itself. You just listen and glance over every once in a while to see how the drawing is shaping up, so if there's game content that's brain off but requires you to look at what you're doing (eg roulettes) even someone with severe ADHD like me can enjoy it without getting so distracted I bork up mechanics or have to pause the video constantly. Highly recommend!
Seconded! Drawfee are super fun and as another person with ADHD I find them easy to listen to/watch while doing my ffxiv chores!

nothing was better at killing time than when i was leveling crafters and had to gather mats from the diadem for 3 hours straight, just hitting rocks and trees, I understand your desire to hit rocks for extended periods of time, it fulfills that primal desire to do something, but not something especially hard, but still feel like you're doing something productive.
Also, favourite show to rewatch annually is Code Geass

I have never heard any two people refer to the Chex-and-powdered-sugar-and-melted-chocolate snack as the same thing. I have heard puppy chow, monkey munch, toddler crunch, kid crunch, Scooby Snax, and more. Thank you for adding to the bewilderment this single snack has given me, in particular.

Quick and dirty Island Sanctuary -
1. Diversify your animals. (There are special animals that only spawn under certain conditions; get them for vanity or variety Typically their rewards are flipped from the normal version, so even if you neglect and abuse them they drop something you want)
2. I don't follow spread sheets. I make things based on one of 2 criteria - Do I have the materials? Is it something that is actually "Insufficient/Non-existent"? - End Island Sanctuary, I make things I need or just have excess materials to go toward. Oh yeah, similar items get "bonuses" so I guess you get more cowries if you string them together.
3. I use the easily gatherable seeds (Pumpkin/Parsnip/Cabbage/Potato) to make feed for my animals - Apples when I'm lazy.
4. Just check in once a day after reset to make sure the Mammets are doing their job and the crops and animals are good. If you feed/water manually? Water last (Damn rain happens too often while I'm doing things or after)
5. Profit. Make Mistress Tataru proud!

Usually when I'm doing my grinds, I watch the massive backlog of CZcams videos I have in a playlist I assembled of all the people I'm subbed to. Which is what I may or may not be doing right now :P
Eureka with Collin Ferguson is free on Amazon Prime (or was) and I never get tired of watching it. Used to watch it air on TV and it's fuuuuuun.
My go-to for grinds varies, usually it's outside xbox list videos or catching up on drawfee episodes. If it's something I need to keep my eyes on then it's podcasts, SYSK and Behind the Bastards especially.

I played FFXIV since the ARR beta on PS4, on and off, currently stopped at the end of Endwalker. I love your videos, as they give me the Eorzea fix I need to not relapse into the addiction, lol.
The tools tab of lalachievements shows where all animals appear and under what conditions. There are 21 super rare animals to collect.....with 20 pasture space

If you want some advice for island sanctuary.
Your robot slaves can only gather resources you've previous gathered, so try to gather at least 1 of each unique resource on the island.
You've increased the gap between us even more this week, but I've been busy with final exams for the winter semester. I'm at 16390 lalachievement score, so 135 behind you.
I did do a few things this week though: I got a custom deliveries achievement, and I participated in a triple triad tournament and got my 30th win, which is an achievement with a TT card for a reward. I also got 3 minions for my minion collection!
The true value of the island is in dyes and hi cordials. The glams are amazing and its a pretty nice place to escape to with friends or to decorate for gpose. So in the last video where you though gathering was miserable, having good cheap hi-cordials can help make the experience less so.
Finally saw the mad because small series, as someone who started playing during EW it was before my time, so it was a welcome surprise, and very funny
I usually listen to audiobooks. My favorites to randomly re-listen to are the ones by Yahtzee Croshaw, the guy who until recently did Zero Punctuation. They're funny and really easy to just throw on for a grind.
The reason Opals are dropped from trees is cause there's a type of opal that is formed from wood, specifically wood that's been petrified
Highly recommend Biographics and Into the Shadows for small-form docuseries videos with a dark subject matter that's really good to play in the background. They're both on YT and the guy that narrates them has a very soothing voice.
Some of the Grand Company armor has like a small buff that you need a sanction to activate. You can get the same buff by talking to one of the Grand Company people that is infront of that keosk, I think its a lalafell that is near the entrance for the Maelsturm.
If you need a big long show to watch while you grind out menial achievements there's always One Piece :^)
My achievements this week:
- 40 unique Leatherworker leves
- 150 Deliveries to Charlemend
- 50 high-level duties as Warrior
- 410 unique crafts as Carpenter (final crafting log achievement for CRP) and 110 on Weaver
- 460 unique fish caught
- 30 provisioning and 50 supply missions for the Flames
- ShB Sightseeing Log finished
My favorite long video to watch when grinding is "The Complete History of the A Button Challenge", a nearly six hour long video about the effort to beat Mario 64 with as few A presses as possible. It goes deep into all of the computer science stuff used to make it happen, wonderful video, highly recommend.

Island Sanctuary has become my Hi-Cordial printing facility. I stop by once a week specifically to check up on animals/crops/reset the weekly workshop stuff, and then let the automation do all the work. The only thing that really requires effort to min-max with it is if you are going for that last achievement for so many blue crowlies earned in a week from the Workshop. I'm not an achievement hunter, so I just eyeball expected interest, set my crafts, and move on.

@@anteprs7908 I'm not sure if this was aimed at me intentionally or not, but I am actually very casual in general. Nothing I said above would indicate otherwise, as I even stated I don't bother min-maxing anything. I automate the island and spend maybe 5 minutes setting it up the crafts for the week. Hell, I don't even have all the animal slots filled. XD
@@jedimasterpickle3 Yeah, once I was done with all the glam/mounts, I just ended up using the Blue Crowlies to get Cordials to save Collectable turn-ins for crafter scrips for relic mats and the like. I'm not a fan of going out and gathering for collectables.

You are the first person I heard saying that they are excited about the 30k Island Sanctuary Achievement. And I'm weirdly excited to see the result.
"Taledji and/or Aledji".. yes I'd do commissions for both of them. I weirdly was very dedicated to my island.. it's fully maxed out and I tend to it weekly... help! Crafting/Gathering have some amazing glams.. sad no one ever sees them since they're class locked and there aren't enough glam plates lol.
I only remember Island Sanctuary when they add stuff to it and when I glance over and see my brother working on his island sanctuary.
My favorite background noise to watch while grinding is mad because small. I don't do that much grinding.
Also once ate a bowl of chex muddy buddies with milk thinking it was cereal. Fun times.

GC sanction: a few grand company gear items have substat bonuses active only when the buff Sanction is active. It's mostly on level 50 gear and there are much better gear to wear. The only possible use case is some level 44 gear if you really wanna go all out for uh......Dzemale Darkhold and Aurum Vale? (edit: theres also some ilevel 130 weapons if you want to save yourself like 600 poetics on ironworks weapons.)
There is also a mage npc at the GC headquarters who will cast the buff for free and it lasts a full 3 hours, the scroll is literally only if you're too lazy to go back to get another free buff. You don't even need sanction gear on, so if you ever want a funny little icon on your hud for a few hours just go visit your local GC mage.

15:40 Lately I've been watching some CZcams series' about the Yugioh card game, on the Cimooo channel. Quick and easy explanation about what was going on during that time, then 2 bros emulate a matchup from the time. Fun series, good background content

I actually don't like watching videos while grinding because I find that I get distracted by the video and forget to grind. I'm very much a "one thing at a time" person.

I ignored all the advice about "optimal island sanctuary animals to collect" and just collected ones that resembled college football mascots. These mascots are the named after those colleges and universities. So I've got stuff like a squirrel named Wisconsin, a coblin named Ohio State, and a bison named Marshall.
@1:55 Dude I've never used Sanctions, don't personally know anyone who ever has either, but I did see some of them during ARR. Players levelling up alts and such who spent GC seals on the green quality like ilvl 40 GC gear, and they had the little like red buff icon I think from using a Sanction. That's what it buffs. Like this is one of those features that has got to be some ancient archaic 1.0 holdover that remains in the game solely because they've simply forgotten to even bother deleting it.
i also like to watch documentaries while doing boring grinds; my go to are various dinosaur/prehistoric infotainment documentaries when i don't have something else planned to watch during as grind.

Last week i watched the entire first season of doctor who while leveling eureka. Ive seen it so many times, its great background content for grinding.
My go-to background entertainment of choice to re-binge is DBZ Abridged, either directly or going through it with the commentaries.
Wendigoon videos are GREAT for background documentary like goodness.

I appreciate Island Sanctuary. It was something pretty easy that gave me some good mounts, paid for a lot of my materia, and will pay for dyes and more materia going forward.

Hey, someone else that likes digging holes in Minecraft! After a long day at work when I'm too tired for anything else, I have a solo world that I log into where there's just a giant 50x50 hole. I put on something to listen to and just DIG. It's relaxing.
Favorite things to watch while I'm doing this are videos of someone playing classic RPGs I'll never get around to playing myself and DnD streams. Currently watching JoCat's "Heart of Elynthi".
No joke digging in Minecraft is so cathartic. I'm not very technical or that good of a builder but just digging a massive hole feels good.
