  • Why use a capture card when you can wirelessly stream your GoPro Hero 7/8 to your computer using an RTMP server. MonaServer is a FREE open source program that creates a RTMP service that your GoPro can connect to and stream the live video. While there is a little delay for the footage to arrive, a lot of possibilities are here.
If you get an error message saying your rtmp address is incorrect, add “/live” to the end of the address. (Without the quotation marks)
You can also try adding just the “/“ to the end of your rtmp address if you get an invalid address error. (Without the quotation marks)
If you have problems connecting to MonaServer, your firewall (Windows Defender or alternative) may be preventing MonaServer from Accessing Port 1935 on your computer. (See Below for more details)
If VLC Video Source isn't available in OBS, you can try adding Media Source. In the Media Source settings, uncheck the "Local File" box and in the Input section, add your RTMP address there. I haven't really used option, so can't speak further on the other settings. I've heard that using the Media Source Option can help if you are having freezing issues using the VLC option.
    ################################
If you have problem connecting to your computer & use an iPhone, Go to Settings on your iPhone and look for the GoPro App settings, Make sure "Local Network" is turned ON so your phone can look for your computer

Another user, shooflypieordie, posted this and you may find it useful. Basically it says your firewall, (Windows Defender, etc) may prevent MonaServer from accessing Port 1935 on your computer.
    1) MonaServer likely needs to be given permission to communicate over PUBLIC networks rather than just private. If you don't do this your GoPro will be unable to stream to that port if you're on public wifi.
    2) I needed to make sure port 1935 was open and not blocked by windows defender or another antivirus.
    3) Although likely not necessary, I ended up specifying my rtmp server as "rtmp://YOUR_IP_ADDRESS:1935" which seemed to be more stable than leaving the port off the end.

You can add offset delay to the microphone input in the mixer settings on OBS, and if you have another camera feed, you can add a filter called video delay(alsync) and add delay to whatever cam is ahead of the GOpro feed. Basically delay all sources to the slowest/laggiest input source you're bringing in. You can't speed things up, but you can slow them down.

    Heads up,
    1) MonaServer likely needs to be given permission to communicate over PUBLIC networks rather than just private. If you don't do this your GoPro will be unable to stream to that port if you're on public wifi.

Hope this helps anyone who may have (like me) initially blamed their poor GoPro.

@@zZMazeZz you should be able to change application permissions from Windows Firewall settings. You'll see options for setting permissions as public or private for various apps. If you don't see the Mona application, there should be an option to add an application, which will allow you to add MonaServer with public network privileges

I really appreciate how straight forward the tutorial was, no bs. I also really appreciate the tip about making sure the camera doesn't over heat by taking the battery out. I am doing my first cooking stream tomorrow, all my other equipment options have failed me so I picked up a Go Pro upgrade pretty last minute. The over heating thing definitely would've been something I found out the hard way tomorrow if you hadn't told me. Going to set myself up with a cord and my portable power bank instead. 👍🏻

    Pro tip:
if you don't have VLC and want to use it in OBS you can add a Browser Source and add the same rtmp address. Depending on how powerful your computer is, it may help lower resource utilization by not needing to run VLC and OBS at the same time. You can just skip the hand off and go straight into OBS with the browser source. My only issue is trying to figure out the best way to either reduce latency or add an audio render delay so the audio and video match when my band does live streams at shows so I don't have to bring my good camera and worry about someone knocking it over or how long of an HDMI cable I'll need for a certain venue.

This is great! I got it to work for like 15seconds. The gopro "decides" it cant find the server, and then just immediately will "not find the server" on any subsequent attempt. Since it "cant find the server" you are effectively locked out of changing the server and have to factory reset it. Tried for about an hour last night and its been a pain. I might try to remove any other load from my wifi and unplug it from the actual internet and try again. Fairly frustrating. Super clear video though, thank you!

With this, I can livestream my DJ sets with cameras located far away, without having to run a USB-C cable or anything but a small powerbank to keep it going for hours on end. I'm going to be using my phone's hotspot as the WiFi network, so I just had to get the IP address of my laptop on that network instead of just my regular wifi network.

So I add one of my add-ons to your work: once VLC is installed and OBS is configured, the following times you can also not start VLC ... OBS Studio still detects the camera since the RTMP link is now created. Thanks again and regards.

I have question, I got HERO7. Purchased it just for stream my dj set on facebook, youtube etc. I purchased Pro 3.5mm mic adapter to get sound straight from my DJ mixer. All works perfect, even customer service from GoPro said it will not working. But where the problem, maybe you know, after 1h of streaming on any platform (youtube, facebook, twitch) it disconnect and can't connect back to wi-fi about 10min. As reason of disconnecting is poor wi-fi connection what is bull#it, because wi-fi connection is 100%. It's just not allowing to stream longer then 1.3h. My set is never shorter then 2.5h. I found a lot of topics about that, this issue, is popular when we talking about PRO7. So, can you please tell me, if you stream with PRO8, can you do it longer then 1h, it's allow you to do it? Please don't be confuse about my kind on live streaming, even if I am going live on facebook normally, without dj set, it's disconnecting after 1h. Thanks anyway

But when I tryed to connect to Mona Server on my computer my stream health bar was very bad and it didn't work, so I made sure port 1935 was open and when I try to go live now the stream health bar is very good but then a couple of seconds later I get the message "make sure your url is correct and your streaming platform is not down". What step am I missing to get the stream to mona server on my computer via my mobile phone hotspot? I'm guessing it can't talk to my local ip address.

Thank you for sharing this tips!! I will try them! I have a question. If I would like to stream my Gopro while I'm riding my bike, the go pro will run under my network connection right? If we chose this option my telephone data usage will increase , is not it? Thank you !!

  • @grupohastaelfinluchare9418

so tried every step and got it to live stream for a second then kicks me out do you know why?

Thanks. Questions: at 720p, what distance can the wifi on the hero 7 transmit? 100 ft? and, I use livestream studio. Can I not bring that footage into LS studio as a video source that would show up on my wifi? what lag time do you think that would then be? thanks again

Great job - it runs perfect. Thanks a lot for your tutorial and enjoy your beer.
I just struggle with linking to OBS although I have VLC installed. OBS does not offer me the VLC source, I only can select a Media Source, which is expected to be a file.
Unmarking I can at least enter the RTMP IP address, but it is only a small buffer that is filled. Maybe your OBS is a newer version than mine but no newer version available yet.
    OBS Version is 25.0.8 64bit.
Anyway - keep on going making stuff. :-)

i know this is old but just in case anyone else is having this problem like i did, choose media source then uncheck local file, where it says input, thats where you put the rtmp://.1.1.1.1 example

Thanks for the tutorial! Is it possible to use a usb cable to capture video with the go pro, or must a capture card be used if you're not using the wifi method? I've been thinking of getting one myself

i think you can capture video directly from hdmi to usb, using elgato camlink 4k, i think yo can transmit video and recorder at same time. its recomended to use usb 3.0

So would this work if I was to live stream away from my house but set up the stream before hand. I'm looking to livestream myself freediving for treasures and exploring under water. Getting the signal to the internet isn't the issue. Having to have my 3k euro laptop unattended by the water is. My home pc is very capable and I'd prefer to use that. Also would it then mean I could just record the stream in obs for later use.
Also I'm unsure but I think you can change battery's during the stream if you connect a powerbank 1st. I might be wrong on that. Would you be able to confirm please.
If I can get it working would then I in theory be able to stream anywhere (that has internet signal) to my home pc or would there not be any signal

why do you sound like you're underwater? is that part of the lag associated with using this process, another part of what you're doing, or is that your microphone?

  • @steniogalvao

Nice video! it helped a lot! but you dont need the VLC, you can catch directly by the OBS
plus you might need to add the path inside the www folder from MonaServer
    installed a RTMP server (mona)
started to stream the GoPro to the RTMP server on my PC (add the path /live after the port number, is the folder inside www on the monaServer)
catch that on the stream program, OBS in this case, adding as media source, deselect local file, and on the input you can put the same address to the mona server rtmp://your-ip:port-number/live

You do not need VLC to stream to OBS. You can enter the rtmp address directly into OBS using add media source. Then choose non local file and format rtmp

Hi Steve, is there a way to do this using an iPhone instead of a Windows PC and the GoPro appear as a camera feed selection in Zoom running on an iPhone. Basically do a Zoom call on an iPhone but use a GoPro wirelessly as the camera source. Thanks for the video.

Hey this is really useful, however I'm having an issue. When I add a VLC source on OBS there isn't a 'add path/URL' option, which means I can't do the final step. I was wondering if I there a specifc area on OBS I need to be in, or if the new version has changed this. Would love some help as this is exactly what I'm looking for an would love to get this to work, thanks

Hello Steve, I have problem with connecting. Using gopro black 7 and enthernal connection on PC. Turn on Mona server, then on quick app open cam and turn on live rtmp://local/live. Then cam connects my wifi and everything ok. But then I hit start button after 2-5s. Shows unable to connect and app shows url not working or streaming program off. Maybe Any solutions? Thanks.
