So I tried traditional painting instead of digital painting for once...
It was much harder than I thought but also 100% worth it.

Care to critique some art I have please?
Thank you for sharing this course with us, with COVID I am doing so much online learning and a lot of art programs are closing around me
Thank you
Expensive, very, very expensive...There are videos of some good and recognized artists from who IMO you'll learn more and better, videos from César Santos, Casey Baugh, Michael Carson, Joshua LaRock, Daniel Sprick, Charlie Hunter, David Kassan, and of course Richard Schmid...all of them professional and renowned painters. You don't need 1000$ in art material to start painting, 1000$, really? I don't think so...at least the box and the paper blocks in the web don't value 1000$, well, not where I buy my art supplies. Anyway, great video as always and thank you for your work...
looks like the 10% discount already got removed? kind of unfortunate
Dude, haven't you seen Bob Ross? He does gradients all the time, just tap, tap, tap them bristles, boom, a perfect sky.
Bob Ross...a must see painter! 👍🏻🌳🌺🌲
charlottesmom facts a true icom
And the bob ross really ARE simple to draw! Didnt believe it until i tried it. And it IS really just tap tap tap, boom, looks absolutely cool. Now everyone who sees that picture thinks i'm a professional landscape painter 😂😂😂
@@ludmillajustus2045 I did a Bob Ross class at Hobby Lobby when i was a kid. I didn't stick with it long mainly because oil paints are so messy and take so long to dry.
@@joeblankenship377 they take not sooo long to dry when you use a fast drying medium. Sure, if you use linseed oil they take a thousand years to dry. But they are fun 😁😁 i use acrylics, oils ans aquarelle. And all of them have their own bennefits... or all of them are a**holes some time 😂😂🙈🙈
When he said I “needed some help” I thought a skill share add was coming up
Nahahhh lmao
Lol I thought the same thing 😂😂
same
Lmao same
Ur video quality is always so top notch that its so soothing to watch!😫💕
Btw: I use that same chapstick🙊
Lol, I use the same chapstick too😂😂😂😂
HAHAHA I Thought to myself so much whether or not to remove it cuz it looked good in the footage
You people need to stop sharing chapsticks. There’s a plague on.
I’ll see myself out now.
My guy is back and he going traditional now😬🔥
I tried traditional painting yesterday and I couldn't stop reaching out to my keyboard to press ctrl z
this s the Way
I was Tryna draw in my sketchbook and I kept pausing multiple times like “where is the redo button” “where’s my next brush” “oh I forgot to change layers!”
Yess. I’ve been drawing digitally for a few years now but I used to always draw traditional. Recently I’ve been trying to get back in to traditional and no joke, I’ve tried zooming in twice now smh 🤦♀️😂😂
I tried painting traditionalally after a while of digital art and I kept trying to save it.
Oh, you also have Ctrl-Z in traditional painting...we call it "scratch with the palette knife"...😂
My dummy self tried zooming in my canvas while painting traditionally a few weeks ago and for 3 seconds I just couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️😆🤪
I was never good at painting anyways lol
@@binikoul2889 yessss💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Sounds like something I'd do! 🤦🏻♀️
happened to me, it was the first time in a good while I tried to draw something on paper, did the first line and automatically pressed ctrl + z on my keyboard, I never felt so stupid.
@@binikoul2889 Me too I guess, I like them all but somedays I like one more lol😆
Same thing goes for mamamoo 😄💜
I am always instinctively prepping my left hand for Ctrl+Z when I'm drawing with a pencil and make a mistake 😂😂
If you stick to the oil painting, you can be the new Bob Ross. Seriously, your voice is so soothing, I just felt so relax and I wanted to pick up a paint brush.
Omg Evolve! I've been doing Evolve Artist for the past few months and posting my progress on my channel. I think it's so cool to see the program get some more recognition. I think it's a really great course so far and I'm so excited to keep going through it!
Yeah! I was surprised I hadn’t heard of it before.
I've only ever done traditional art so I find it interesting when a digital artist tries traditional. Especially since I've never done digital.

thanks ryo
POG
This almost feels like a man from the future has gona back several decades in his time machine to try the old gadgets he used to use as a kid and you know what?
I'm here for it
I started drawing on the computer when I was about 10 years old. My main tools for several years were just our home computer and a mouse but I always dreamed about one day being able to draw on a screen. I still sketched on paper very often and I eventually learned how to colour those sketches digitally. When the Wacom Cintiq was revealed I was so excited but the price tag made it extremely unaffordable. As time went on, more display tablets were created and the prices became much more affordable. Now, at 29, my dream is reality and there are so many different display tablets to choose from. I now have an iPad and I love that the drawing experience is clean and I can choose any colours to work with! I have little interest in buying and storing paints and all of the other supplies needed for traditional art. In a way, drawing digitally is "traditional" to me because I've been doing it for about 2/3 of my life. I guess the point of this is to say that I absolutely love drawing digitally and I am so happy we're at a time where display tablets are more accessible and people have the option of painting digitally and/or traditionally.
I love oil paints! I use walnut oil these days instead of turpentine, which really cuts down on the harsh chemicals and fumes, and it makes cleanup pretty quick and easy. For me, my digital and traditional work have each built off the other over the years, which has helped me grow in new ways as an artist.
I switched from traditional to digital art a couple weeks ago, and I was actually working with oilpaint before that. It was the cheapest stuff, but traditional is so much fun. Sometimes I actually find myself missing the smell of paint. But in the end nothing beats digital drawing/painting for me since I like to move around and I'm too lazy to clean everything up lol
Haha that's why I ended up focussing on watercolour, it's the easiest to clean up
Much respect to doing traditional. I come from that. Most people sleep on the basics. Practice is always important.
i read "im TIRED of traditional painting" :D
omg i LOVE your channel Barbart!!!
Lmao
I loved this video! Traditional art can definitely be tricky and intimidating, but you definitely made it feel like something worth trying!
Also the voice over was soo soothing to listen to, it made the video even more enjoyable!
Thanks Sasha! It def was a challenge but a peaceful one that demanded a nice voiceover experience ;)
His tone of voice intimidates me but not in a bad way.
"A screaming, burning baby." was not expecting that.
He has such a nice voice.
Really makes you listen
Hey, I'm a traditional artist but I'm learning digital.
The only problem is I keep trying to erase my lines with an eraser. That, and I got paint all over my monitor and tablet. Help. 😉
Wow! Really cool seeing your experience with this. Quality video.
I'm just soo happy😛 I'm a traditional BROKE +artist 😂 and half of my art supplies I've are stolen from my younger siblings and i really wanted you to do traditional art and it happened 😻😻😻you did amazing painting 🤯 like .. man !!!after so many years you painted so incredibly!!!
I always envy someone who can paint oils. The amount of time it takes for them to dry makes layering difficult and colour mixing is difficult. Painting a person's face in oil looka like the ultimate challenge.
I've missed watching you on Twitch, but if its not rude to suggest an oil painter artist on twitch, there's a guy called "ArthurGain" who does some mesmerising oil painting if you ever want to chill and watch a traditional oil painter.
Buy that said, this has been a great video, it's good to hear from you again :) hopefully won't be too long before the streams are back but hopefully you're doing well man. Take care :)
loved this video! it's so fun watching digital artists try traditional art mediums and vice versa.
Early! Awesome video, you are such a perfectionist so talented! :-)
In case you wondering the course*costs 2000*just saying
2000 whut
bruh.
Yehh... not gonna waste that
Not that I ever wanted to lol
"Brushes Have a Mind of There Own"
sounds like a good Movie Title
Or a book for fine arts.
Ah, love you. I don't really do digital (Yet) but have learnt so much from you watching your videos. I paint in oils and acrylic and mixed media, I draw and compose with photoshop. I have mastered so many techniques and seeing you try to expand your repertoire has been very enjoyable. Everything in the end comes down to attitude. Keep up the good work and learn to embrace the fear, there is much it can teach us.
It's so cool to see artists switching from digital to traditional media! They both come with their own challenges :) Just a question, but did this course go over how to work safely with the oils and thinners and such? (ie ventilation, cleanup, disposal of chemicals, etc.)
I wasn’t sure at first but if you’re not cleaning your brushes with a medium like linseed oil or mineral spirits you should be before rinsing them with water. I use just linseed oil to clean mine and I’ve never used soap and water unless I was reshaping my brushes.
Hey Josh! Cool video. I'm a traditional painter (I work on oil primarily, but also acrylic). As with anything, it does take a lot of practice to achieve any level of mastery. If it's something you enjoy, it's always worth it! ☺️ Thank you for sharing your experience.
I honestly don't know how I missed this video! It looks like you had a great start!!! I hope that you keep it up!! I love painting and I always want to do more. I can't wait to really be able to paint with my kids.
Who else loves the smell of oil paints?
and all the toxic chemicals mixed with it lol
That was one of the biggest surprises. I enjoyed the smell after awhile
Me 😅🎨👍
Yess I always feel out of sorts when I head to bed after painting 😆, I paint in my small bedroom too probably not that great for your health tbh
Mine as smell a lot like fish oil, not sure if that was used to make them though
I know some people can be really sensitive to some types of mediums/paint thinners so yeah be careful 😎 ideally don't sleep with them either 😂
Omg seeing joshes set up. Then seeing the sun beam through and seeing the plants. It must have been so comfy and warm i woykd be painting for hours on end
This is by far my favorite video maybe because I’m a traditional artist and I love paints! After seven years of not painting I don’t think you lost your touch in my opinion and it was nice to watch. I never worked on canvas or use oil paint in my life maybe because of the expensive price and what I heard about oil paint, but I’m thinking about buying a few to give it a test drive. Time to get out of my comfort zone which is ink, watercolor, gouache, alcohol-based markers, and acrylic. Thank you for this great video. P.S. Now I see why you never answer my question on “ask me anything “ because it would’ve been a spoiler for this video. I’m happy that you’re stepping out of your comfort zone which inspires many of us to do the same! Also one of my favorite parts of this video is you looking into the camera as it was fading at the end! Great video and Thank you again. 🙌🏽🎨💫✨
Ayyy Josh so awesome to see the painting space evolve into something more analog. Traditional gets messy, but it's really fun and there's something sweet about the movement of the tip of the brush and the transfer of paint onto the canvas. Keep at it!
Glad I found your channel :) It's great that you started painting again after so long. I had the opposite where I've been drawing traditional since I was 4 years old and then started doing digital in college: That took a while to get used to. Now, I find myself balancing with both in various styles since I like each one in different ways.
Dang Josh you're super cool! You just pick up whatever and do an awesome job. Kicking butt and taking names.
I just recently found the channel and this man is crazy inspiring. I’ve been doing digital art for quite a while using my iPad and this inspired me to go back to paper after a bit. It was a great experience to go back to the old way.
I remember that when I was a kid I learn many mediums of traditional art including pencil drawing, acrylic painting, a bit of oil painting, watercolour painting, oil pastel, chalk, charcoal drawing, clay and more. I also learned a lot of techniques and styles along the way. It's alot of fun because despite looking terrible looking at it now, it reminds me of the desire to learn new things. That's how I found out about anime and digital art as well. That stopped for a while when I took art as a subject and stuck onto doing ink illustrations and digital illustrations. Of course I got bored for a while which made me go back to making a mess with acrylic and watercolour paints at some point. Now studying in polytechnic, I learned alot of things about digital media; tools like Photoshop, illustrator, premier Pro, and even after effects, learn alot about design, composition, colour, typography, animating, editing and more. It was great. Mmm what I was trying to say is that it is ok to mess up or fail. Because that'll end up to help you in the future. It's also nice to see the progress from how you start and where you are now. Well I'm still afraid of messing up but I know that through my mistakes, I can do better!!! Ganbare famn
one tip i can give you for painting straight lines traditionally is to make sure you flip the board/canvas so you're painting the lines horizontally. It's hard to explain over text, but place your brush down firmly and lock your wrist in place, then move your arm horizontally in order to create the straight line. I do this with watercolors all the time and for some reason it gives me more control than trying to paint a straight line vertically. THis looks amazing and i hope you keep doing traditional art!
Good on you for setting yourself on this path. Looking forward to more.
I appreciate seeing people attempt traditional painting. It’s unique and slightly more chaotic to do. Painting is soothing and I’m glad you didn’t get to frustrated. I adore painting
Wonderful video! So nice to listen/watch while painting! I do watercolor paintings so it was a cool change that you were talking more about a traditional method today
last vid we see Ross draws traditionally, now we got Ergo,, ok whos next?
Ikr I was like wow what a coincidence lol
Me 😂👍
Bob Ross drawing digitally 😂
Wow! What an inspirational video! Thanks for sharing your journey and your struggles. It is very much appreciated. I was learning oil painting on my own until I found a great artist whom I bought his videos, the classical style. I fell in love with it and I strive for perfection. It is not easy but patience and determination has given me the opportunity to pick up the brush and paints again and go for it! Congratulations on your new challenge and always the best in everything you do. Blessings and be safe! Great job!
really nice seeing you try something new!
i recently picked up my watercolors after not touching them for years, and while i didn't do anything complicated, the stuff that i did do was really peaceful and relaxing. i really resonated with the ritual of having to get everything out and arranging everything where in digital you just open a new doc and sometimes the possibility of being able to do literally anything you want can be too much.
hope you keep messing with oils! ooh, or, maybe you can try watercolors or inks next o;
It’s great that you’re pushing your skill set, especially as a digital artist, and really interesting to hear your comments on your progress!
You seem so frustrated but honestly, I feel like this was the most relatable videos I’ve ever seen and still motivated me to proceed in my art as well! 👍 love your stuff man!
You look stressed 😩 Josh lol 😂 it’s OK nobody gets it the first time in! Oil paint in it self is a learning curve! This is why I tell people all the time that you should start traditional first and then go to digital. that’s what I did 😃💖💖
Hey Josh, I've been doing the Evolve course for a couple months, but going at a slower pace. After a while, it eventually clicks and your technique becomes much more fluid! I've also been posting my video journey on YT as well.
wow the time you put into this really shows! great work !
Yaay!its exciting learning to use a new medium and this experience will surely make you a better digital artist!
Ah yes. Awesome work Josh. Loving this so far.... I literally just bought some gouache yesterday and I'm excited for some more painting.
Glad that someone mentioned that oil paintings ARE hard to handle. Just because it looks easy doesnt mean that it really is.
At least until you worked some time with oils. Then you learn some tricks, try some different mediums, find your own best way to paint and from then it gets way more easier.
This looked so calming to work on! 😍Inspired to get back into traditional art
@ergojosh I’m happy for you and proud of you for finding peace and change and a new hobby! I don’t have an iPad Pro yet and I’m saving to get one ☝🏻 but I have been doing traditional art for all my life I’ve never had experience with digital art but I hope I can nail it down but traditional art isn’t that bad it’s just to make it peace and resting your eyes from blue lights that are kinda dangerous and coming from screens but again glad you’re having fun and enjoy it like you said “if you don’t enjoy doing art or traditional then art isn’t for you” wise :)
So cool to see a digital artist attempt to go back to traditional work. It makes me feel a little less bad about being not o great at digital since I started with traditional painting
You shouldn't feel bad about it at all! Digital demands its own practice.
This was the most calming, soothing while still being educational, video ever! 😭✨❤️
I love this! It's very different from your usual content. :-)
Dope, I love using oils the wet look they provide especially on portraits, awesome work man
Hey Ergo Josh! 😊 You are officially an 'Evolver!' 🥳 This is a great video about the 'Evolve Realistic Art' process! I'm so happy you took the plunge! 😊 I'm currently in Block 4 and I'm loving the program and the community! 🥰 Happy that you're part of the 'Evolve' family! 😁👍🏽🖌🎨🖼
Watching your videos makes me feel soo calm, I used to love traditional and actually I was alittle better than I am with digital. I've stopped drawing and painting because it makes me super anxious but painting is so much fun and It feels super good and relaxing when you don't have the mindset of it being perfect
Perfect art! So beautiful. Watching your work healed my heart. Thank you for sharing. I support you. My friend.
I'm working through the beginning of the Evolve program right now. It was great to see your thoughts on it. I'm glad I'm not the only one that has trouble painting sharp edges. Kevin makes it look easy, but I guess that's what lots of experience does for you!
You should continue with the course! I’d like to see you do more!
I love seeing josh try traditional art this video was so calming
I mix all different kinds of art up and make both digital and traditional art so idk how I manage to remember all the different steps to different mediums
You can’t undo and separate layers but for certain works I find that easier, mostly depends on what I want to depict
i need to see more of this JOSH
pllls do some oil paint asmr
*I BET THAT WILL KICK OUR EARS OFF*
I’m down for you doing some more traditional art videos! Your humility makes this content very relatable. You should attempt a self portrait. That’d be fun🤍
Nice work! 👍🎨
Love these videos Josh, as a fellow black artist who's still in his 1st year of progress you provide so much insight & knowledge & your videos are top quality!
Thank you! Im happy to hear this
Very inspiring video man. Hope we van watch more of your studies
I'd really like something like Evolve for digital art.
Feels hard to find good courses that have enough content and don't cost endlessly.
My first assignment was so messy I thought I would get thrown out. lol I just started it after seeing ads, Nianiani, and Mithril's videos. I didn't get thrown out and apparently it wasn't as bad as I thought. Working on the gradients now.
I love it, oil paints are amazing
I think it is rare to see how a beginner artist (in oil painting) evolves, so I think it would be great if you continue this series and vlog the growth! :)
What's going to happen is, when you go back to messing with digital brushes, you'll find yourself saying, "nonono. That brush is working wrong." That's what happened to me at least. I started art with traditional supplies. I didn't get any computer stuff until way after learning art.
One thing we did in one class was each student was only able to use one color chalk. There were about 30 students in the class. Instructor put a potted plant in the middle of all the easels. You went around the room with 30 seconds for each drawing. She'd get on your case if you weren't drawing all over the drawing the full 30 seconds. At the end those drawings were crazy cool.
Omg. I’m loving for this 😍😍😍
When you said that you painted those at the start, I had to do a double take. I thought they were photos 😭
Yessss this is awesome!! 🥺🥺🥺💞💞
I can relate to this so much! I mean, I love traditional art but painting is just too hard for me. Anyway, great video as always 🤍
This was great to see a artist come from digital and try traditional! I have done 20 years oil and traditional... and got into digital this year but the traditional knowledge transfers well! Tip for Oil: Paint in a super well ventilated room! the solvents cause cancer and got Bob Ross! so be careful and keep progressing!
Oil is a doozy at first but so wonderful and forgiving! So nice to see you enjoying it. I’m know I’m the 1,000th commenter to say this but your voice keeps me calm and relaxed. You gotta utilize it, it’s definitely an untapped skill!
wow such a great result, I really need to learn more about shadows 👀😳🔝
gorgeous!!
I've always done traditional,so I feel you with the shock of how hard it is.I have tried digital several times,I think its harder,ig thats why there's different ways to do art for different ppl.But ye fr those brushes sure do "have a mind of their own" lol
Very cool. I feel like my art journey is like yours but reverse. I started with traditional and now I'm learning digital art and learning to draw people. Tho, I don't think my public school education art classes compares to these classes xD
I'm having exactly the opposite struggle. Been doing traditional art since ever i remember myself. I went to art school for 8 years and got bachelors degree in arts. Oil painting, drawing, charcoil drawings. Now I'm trying to pick up digital painting and I'm struggling so much, everything seems so strange. Also it is a big hit to my ego. Gotta practice and practice again, i guess!
Wow ERGOJOSH in traditional..
This is supercool and amazing 😊
My g did you know your voice is so soothingggggg!!! 😭😭😭😭
You have a very pleasant voice! 💕
Aye way to go evolve! Getting their name out there. I just entered block 4!
Just saying, as a traditional artist who has always felt almost defeated by hour beautiful Josh’s work is, this gave me a new perspective and a lot of hope for myself. My paintings are good, we just use different mediums and they each have their own challenges.
Maaaan your voice is relaxing
I could never go out of my comfort in dawing!
Especially oil paints!
WOW 7 years! Good on ya
My hand is shaky too. At some point, I would like to dive deep into the atelier method of learning. My concern with these courses is that I've done many similar exercises on my own, but cannot skip ahead. I even stopped painting for a few years to go back to basics just to have someone tell me to go back to drawing again. At least I eventually got them to appreciate my art later on.
Any else who's a traditional oil painter get super edgy watching this? Josh the delight of oils and the fact they don't dry quickly is the wonder, jump in you don't need to be so carful, if you go wrong you can paint over it, I'm not sue how the course is taught but using bigger brushes and then finishing with the smaller brushes would have helped (as the other teacher mentioned)- don't be afraid to experiment - I know its a class but it's an art class so I'm sure theres room to wiggle. Anyway good for you trying out a new medium =). Also usually I find your voice and video style really soothing, its only this one- because you can tell how nervous you are to paint- hope some of my tips help
