  • After waiting (and waiting) for a bike in my size, I finally got to ride (albeit slowly) the newly updated Surly Disc Trucker.

    I think the people who scoff at the 3x9 drivetrain just don't get the application that the Trucker was made for. 9 speed is pretty bombproof. Compatible parts are generally plentiful and affordable if you are out on tour and would need to find replacements. The price isn't bad at all for what you get. You get some decent mechanical brakes, tubeless compatible wheels and tires with thru-axles, and a solid, versatile frame with every kind of mount you'd ever need.

    I hopped onto a new 2022 56cm Disc Trucker and it was a perfect fit! I’m 5’9” short legs long torso and ride a 56cm square road bike. I really liked the more upright position provided by the extra stack. The bike felt much more light, nimble and stable than its predecessor. 3X9 is perfect for times when you have a load and encounter hills. I was impressed. Info: 63yr old, retired road racer, riden all sorts of bikes over the last half century.
    I plan to buy one and just take off on it!

    I bought a regular trucker 4-5 years ago because the disc trucker wasn't available in a 64cm. Now that it is, I may make the leap.
    Also thinking about having a local bike builder install S&S couplers so I can take it overseas.

    I bought a 2019 Disc Trucker to be an all-arounder but it turns out I hate bar-end shifters. Traded it for a 2021 Straggler and have been very happy with the 2 rides I took before the snow came and roads got salty.

    • @ThePsychicDerailleur
      @ThePsychicDerailleur  Před 3 lety +1

      I have to be honest. I’ve never quite understood people having such strong feelings about a certain shift lever. I’m glad you got a bike you really liked. The Straggler is a great one. However, it sounds to me like your problem was more with the Trucker than the shifter.

  • @goatster_21
    @goatster_21 Před 3 lety +3

    too often when folks "upgrade" to lighter, snappier, pricier components they do it at the expense of durability. I don't think Surly put the components they did on the new Trucker to save a buck, more so than to keep you on the road for a few decades.

      Also because if your out on the road and something breaks it won't cost so much at whatever bike shop you find to get a replacement part, I think the groupset on that bike makes complete sense for its purpose.

    Swapped forks on my 2012 LHT in August, works a treat. Still oogling the 2020 Disc Trucker, though, but will find comfort with my new ECR. :-) Probably will invest in the Truck Stop bars for a bit of extra height over the Nitto Randos the LHT is sporting now.

  • @roberts.328
    @roberts.328 Před 3 lety +4

    Looks to be very similar to the Trek 520 especially with components, of course there are differences in geometry. The two bikes are now priced almost exactly the same, but the 520 now includes both front and rear rack which can be costly if purchased separately. The new green color is not my favorite, I hope it comes in something like a black or darker color. I really like the new handlebars and fork setup, it gives a lot of options other bikes don’t offer. The thru-axles are also a great feature. I’m looking forward to seeing and riding one when available.

    Hi, I'm wondering, if you have to choose only one bike to commute and touring would you choose Disc trucker or bridge club ?
    And as it's quite difficult to find surly bikes to try where I live (France) can you tell me, I'm 5,6 and 31 inseam, shall I try a m bridge club ?
    Thank for your videos, very nice and interesting !

    • @ThePsychicDerailleur
      @ThePsychicDerailleur  Před 3 lety +2

      My first question from France! Exciting!! Those bikes are two sides of the same coin IMO. At 5’6 you’re probably a 52 Trucker (54 max) which means 26” wheels. That isn’t an issue really and it’s a great riding bike. Bridge Club is going to give you larger wheels, and the ability to run two different wheel sizes (not at the same time obviously). Disc Trucker has a slightly nicer wheel set and thru axles-which is nice. It’s a really tough, and close call. I would say if you’re ok with a 1x get the Bridge Club-700 if you can, but either is good. If you can’t, you won’t be disappointed in the Trucker. I hope that helped.

      @@ThePsychicDerailleur Hi, thanks for your answer ! It's nice to discover your videos and you passion for bikes. It's soooooo lovely to just go and ride. I went to see a friend today and I could feel spring everywhere, bird, flowers, sun...great smile. Just one more question : for me what size should I choose for bridge club (I'm actually 5,7 (170cm) ? I really like this bike but I'd rather go for a 2x and 27,5 wheels as I feel better with smaller wheels (but might just be in my mind...). Not sure I can find this anymore as Surly seems to sell only 700 but that would be my choice. Thank you again and have a nice day !

      @@segolenegueguen5258 Answer coming on Wed but I forgot the bit about wheel size. I too prefer the 27.5 wheel. If all you can find is 700 you have 2 choices. Wait for 27.5, or buy the 700 and buy another wheel set sometime down the road. It’s likely a tough choice, but if you need a bike right now go for it! Need being the key word there.
