Facts
A "blocked" shot is technically called a "shatter", because the shell shatters against the armor.

I use same setup, especially in Leon, t.I think it’s underrated, it’s my favorite battleship, and this video just enhances my point. I go for pen and usually get massive damage hits.
Good explanations tbull! I've been trying to figure how best to work the hms cruisers. Do I want to increase pen value or AP damage. Thus helped quite a bit. As always, thanks for the timely & well thought out info!

@@TheRchrishyatt I was confused about which makes more of an impact on gameplay. Going for more a.p. damage or going for better penetration values. I was confused about how to set up my commanders & what inspirations would work best. I had steered away from the pen values because I figured it would increase the likelihood of overpens. Tbull made a fair amount of sense with his explanations, so I changed it up today. Had a solid day in the Leander so it seems to work well
Do torpedoes next. Dedicate it to Hive Hound and his 3 Kagero reload division who fired 48 fish at a single JB and missed everything.

I love the Lyon I do have JJ at 15. I think it does create over pens at flatter trajectories on cruisers less than 10k. I deleted a full health Edinburgh at 14 KM today 3 cits. I've seen 6 of my 7 shells over pen. Did cit a tirpitz at 12 km today. In a lyon. Thanks for the vids.
AP multiplier doesn't increase over-penetrations. Over-penetrations happen when the shell's fuse doesn't activate. A shell's fuse activation is determined by the caliber of the shell which doesn't change.

GG. Cheers for the AP info. I’m in BBs 100% of the time and there are enough combinations of skippers traits to keep me chewing gum. I am sticking with Cunningham and Madden for most of my secondary builds esp on US BBs, I find the accuracy and traverse speed handy, have tried other combinations but keep coming back to my security blankets. Appreciate you going through different traits it saves me some time. Guess I am a creature of habit or too bloody stubborn to change much, I like to feel the ground when I jump in. Now If you could only answer this conundrum. If Two trains left opposing stations at the same time both travelling at the same speed, could I get a decent burger and change for a cold beer when they meet? Peas love and mmm beer, Johnno Bloke
They will never increase overpens. They reduce shatters. There will never be a time where the 4-5% difference gained by Jaujard stops a shatter, skips over a normal pen, and results in an overpen. I imagine everyone saying they get more overpens with him have a sort of confirmation bias, as we’re not able to test ships properly for control (which would be the only way to prove it without WG saying there’s a bug with it)
Exactly, there is basically no way to test these things in a way that can be replicated
increasing the penetration multiplier won’t cause overpen because the shells has a fuse timer and it’s will explode after traveling a certain amount of time and armor. increasing penetration is always a good thing for any ship that use AP as main weapon of damage.
Honest question, and this is not an exact scenario, just the kind of thing that happens often...FE: If I hit a Pensacola as the Warspite in what looks like a perfect shot from 6km and it does a bunch of 1k damage per hit. Is that over penetration or just crappy RNG? I always assumed it was overpen, because that it seams as though that same shot would citadel from further distance.
Secondly, if this has something to do with the angles of the shells in close combat keeping it from citadeling, where should you aim if you find yourself in a close combat situation with no time to switch to HE?
My biggest confusion is just the regular penetration damage.
I know bounces and shatters give you no damage, i know overpens are 10% damage, and i know cits are "full damage" or the actual damage stat thats displayed on the ship stats page. But then what is the damage formula for a regular penetration?
with the penetration boost perks, I understand it can convert normal bounces and blocks into penetrations/ overpenetrations, but can it convert a penetration into an overpenetration? That would be my only worry with those perks
In general, no. Perhaps extremely infrequently, but that is doubtful
Do you know if the Belfast has the same armor scheme and AP as the Edinburgh? On paper it does and I think going full HE spammer at 9% fire chance is the wrong strat if so. Unfortunately the stats don’t show armor layout or fuse characteristics...
Definitely not the same armor. Not sure about the shells, probably a weaker version
Tbull Thanks for the feedback! I bow tanked a J.B. in the Edinburgh yesterday - it was kinda hilarious because he thought he could sail broadside and delete me at about 5km in one salvo while I was pumping 2.5k into his upper belt ever 7.5 seconds with only 2 of my turrets. Got frustrated and sailed away after I chunked 2/3 of his health.
My 1 year old just shouted “He gone” with you. I’m lmao.

Depends on whether you play at edge of range or brawling as well. No good increasing pen if asking shells to traverse the entire map as they then lose the velocity needed anyway.
what's your opinion on von essons base trait? It's it have a great base trait to build ?
I'm interested in it but haven't had the promotion orders to properly test it yet
Jojo is good when you know you are going to targeting battleships only once you put him on and hes a decent level that pen. multiplier is crazy as hell and you'll almost ALWAYS overpen everything else
Russell not true, overpen happens because of light armor and certain places on ship that has less armor, if you increasing the pen multiple won’t effect that because AP has fuse timer that timer won’t change.
I would like to know why my allies shells just touch the enemies and they blow them up, where as, when I penetrate (about 30 hits), (AP, HE) I just can't seem to blow them up to save my life, even when I penetrate the destroyers, still nothing happen., Just multiple pens! It's also strange that at the time my shells hit the enemy, one of my allies sink them pretty quick, I'm talking less than a second! Thanks, Great info! I subbed your channel.
Search for tbull armor angling in the search, that should give you the info you need. Basically if your flat broadside is being struck by AP then you're going to take massive damage, but if you're at a 45 degree or steeper angle when those shells hit they'll do little to no damage

You should be able to put it on in the loadout screen for the Leander once you finish all the missions associate with the british cruiser line
As a new player I thought AP was to shoot threw thicker armor like in the front of ships and HE was for less armored ie the side of the ships. Game could use a tutorial. I didn't really understand the spotting distances or the ships roles either.

Auto bounce??? Lol. I got citadeled in my jean bart while i was pointing directly at the ship that got the citadel hit. Doesn't happen a lot though.
Probably hit through the deck armor. The scattering of shots means that in most salvos you'll be hitting different surfaces with different armor values and angling, which is why there are a variety of results from the same pull of the trigger
This is complex and it comes down to a combination of the weight restrictions of the WNT, performance characteristics demanded by navies, and fundamental design philosophies. The problem is that on a 35K ton displacement you can only have so much. Deck armor is very heavy in an absolute sense, since it covers so much surface area of the ship. The British extended the armor deck on some of their BBs (KGV, Nelson--Rodney was never upgraded) angling down from the bulkhead closing off the citadel to avoid a shell coming in at a steep angle and striking the magazine below this bulkhead. The US didn't bother and felt the risk was worthwhile to pursue other requirements. The French were similar.

Vanguard, terrible dispersion, squishy armour, shit AP, slow as shit, no recon.
Bismark, takes a little too much dmg from non citidel hits and shit dispersion.
@@TheLiamis Vanguard is an extremely flexible ship and is very good. However if you don't know how to play her correctly she can seem awful
hunters hiding in the back tossing out HE in the hope that 1 in 40 starts a fire and that 1 in 40 fires isnt just extinguished in 3 seconds isnt my idea of playing a BB. It's why I use iowa, jean bart and fuso. Real bbs. The vanguard is just trash plus that over angle to use rear guns.
And yes I have hit 160k+ dmg matches in it but its more work than its worth for no extra reward.
I can do 1/3 the work with any other BB and get the same result/reward.
Same with RN cruiser line.
I can nuke the other team with yorck get 100k+ easy in 32 hits.
Rn cruiser is like 130 hits to superstructure for 19k dmg.
@@TheLiamis Well I dont play the Vanguard like that and even if I did the fact you dont like playing bbs like that is only your opinion and not an argument. I would also like to point out the Vanguard has much higher chance of fire than 1 in 40. 40% means 40 in 100 or 4 in 10 not 1 in 40
It makes no sense I cant cit a scharnhorst class even with a Lyon. Bismarck... yeah you could pump 20 shots into me blind fold me spin me around and have me throw a dart into a dark hallway and still nail the citadel.

Never been able to cit a bisko. Get big damage from it on non citidel hits though.
Hyde + jojo insperation with the angel build for hyde is disgusting and should be banned..I know because regardless of angle I get pens over pens or citadel I hardly get bounce shots
I wasn't playing leveling him up quite get, but with the kriegsmarine being strengthened next week I might have to move him up
