The Diaspora Conversations Conference held on Tuesday, 2nd January 2024, marked a watershed moment in the ongoing dialogue between Ghana and its diaspora community. Themed ‘The Diaspora Canvas,’ the event, hosted in partnership with Ecobank Ghana at their Head Office Auditorium in Accra, drew a diverse crowd of attendees, each eager to explore the multifaceted relationship between the diaspora and the African continent at large.
In its third edition, the conference has grown in stature and significance, becoming a vital platform for direct engagement between diasporans, government bodies, business leaders, and investors. The event's success is a testament to the growing interest in and importance of diaspora relations in Ghana's socio-economic landscape.
One of the highlights of the conference was the collaboration with key government agencies. The National Identification Authority (NIA), for instance, facilitated the issuance of Ghana Cards to attendees, a crucial step in integrating diasporans into the national fabric. The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), and Ghana Lands Commission were also instrumental in providing valuable insights and guidance on navigating the business and regulatory environment in Ghana.
Panel discussions were a central feature of the event, with topics ranging from land procurement and registration to the role of the Ghana Card in business. The first panel, ‘Meet the Regulators,’ featured a lineup of esteemed speakers, including Chief Superintendent Simon Asare from the Ghana Immigration Service, Surv. Jones Ofori-Boadu from the Ghana Lands Commission, Mr. Akwasi Agyeman from the Ghana Tourism Authority, Mr. Emmanuel Nortey Botchway from the Birth and Deaths Registry, Mr. Joseph Poku from the Social Security and National Insurance Trust, and Dora Badu Acheampong from the National Identification Authority.
The conference also provided a platform for successful entrepreneurs to share their experiences and insights. Attendees heard from individuals who have navigated the complexities of the Ghanaian business landscape, offering practical advice and inspiration for those looking to follow in their footsteps.
Networking opportunities abounded, with participants engaging with industry leaders, potential partners, and fellow diasporans. These connections are the foundation for future collaborations and initiatives that will further strengthen the ties between Ghana and its global community.
The event featured three insightful panels, including ‘Doing Business in Ghana,’ with speakers such as Madam Anne Okpala from Tripplesea Technologies, Mr. Anthony Mensah Dzamefe from TimepieceGh and Caveman Watches, and Mr. Salah Kweku Kalmoni from Lakeside Estates. The third panel, ‘Insights from Ghana,’ provided perspectives from the diasporan community, with contributions from Madam Delasie Aning, Mr. Myx Quest, Madam Sandra Beke, Mr. Diallo Sumbry, and Mr. Neil Nii Oku, all of whom shared their experiences of living, doing business, or investing in Ghana.
The conference was made possible through the support of sponsors like Ekumfi Fruits & Juices, Crop Estate, PayAngel, Starbites, and Tripplesea Technologies. Their contributions underscored the collaborative spirit that underpinned the entire event.
The GUBA Diaspora Network (GDN) played a crucial role in organizing the conference. As a membership-based platform, GDN serves individuals of African Diasporan descent and returnees, as well as businesses and corporate organizations interested in connecting, relocating, or investing in Ghana. The network fosters a sense of community, facilitating the exchange of information and skills, promoting cultural awareness, and providing opportunities for business advertising.
In conclusion, the Diaspora Conversations Conference 2024 was a resounding success, fostering meaningful dialogues and strengthening the bonds within the diaspora community. It highlighted the potential for collaboration and investment in Ghana, setting the stage for future growth and development. As we look forward to the next edition, the conference stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity for diasporans and Ghanaians alike, promising a brighter, more interconnected future.

This was a really useful video with explanations straight from the government agencies. It's good to hear the information direct from the authorities in such an open forum. Thank you for putting this together and for sharing.

I enjoyed what i heard from this conference. It is very encouraging, then again, a lot of work is to be done. I felt conflicted by the man from GIPC.
He indicated that the president and a lot of those in government were mostly abroad. Yet, i do not see that reflecting in their policies and acts. It seems like we all want to be like abrokyire. We know what and how it feels to be as such, but for the greed and selfisheness, those so-called diasporeans.seem to lose their sense of bearing once they get power.
Ghanahas the potential in all aspects and that is where the disappointment lies in for some of us....the people in "power"

Big applause to Ms. Prosper Ivy for hitting the right buttons.
Thanks also to the lady who asked the question about the roads in the city. It’s rather unfortunate to see the response she got, and that leads me to think these people in authority are still living with very colonial mentality without an ounce of national development in mind.
The colonizers came, robbed us of our natural resources to build their countries. These people in authority who at least have been exposed to the outside world comes back, but this time, enriching themselves and lecturing us of how much resources the country in blessed with, dressed in suits with jewelry to the teeth. Others talking about 5 star hotel ratings without considering the fact that a 5 star rating comes with better roads. Otherwise, it’s still short of a star.
To the very well spoken Mrs Dora Badu of the NIA, they need to do a better job keeping the office at the very least, clean and do their best and remove the amount of filth and cobwebs in their offices. It’s unhealthy and a health hazard to the staff and visitors. The dilapidated couches in the main office. My goodness, it is embarrassing to the nation. Personally, l have volunteered to at least donate measuring height tapes to the office. Come on people!
One goes closer to the jubilee center and next to the right is the military residence or flats that has not seen a coat of paint in 50 years. The very grounds has zero ashpalt. At the very least, bricks could be an alternative yet states men and women are on daily basis with foreign dignitaries are visiting. Let’s think about national development people! not just individual pockets please.
One arrives at the airport and swarmed with desperate Ghanaians trying to make ends meet. The very baggage conveys are dirty and filthy, yet all it takes is soap and water to clean, such a simple act of house keeping has been ignored by the very tourism board. What image is Ghana sending to the world. The entire city has no considerable functioning traffic lights not to talk about road signs. Pathetic would be an understatement.
I Would implore the organizers of this event to raise some of these very basic necessities to be addressed as a matter of urgency to save the image of the country if they want to attract more diasporas and investors otherwise most people will come, exploit and leave just like the colonizers did.
It’s about time we change the way we think and move forward towards national development rather than pocket of buildings without good roads and infrastructure.
Thank you very much for organizing this event and l hope this critique is taken in good faith. It is only then, we can develop. Otherwise we become a laughing stock when visitors leave and discuss Ghana at the dinner table.

In a country whose ruling government couldn't pay an electricity bill of just $1.2million until the electricity was disconnected while having parliamentary section. Shame!!!!! , owes just $3.5billion foreign debt and couldn't settle and had to go borrrowing $1.5billion to reservice it. Shame!!!. As corrupt as it gets.

We shouldn’t think of real estate only. We should build factories, factories, factories. If you build expensive homes and the average Pearson cannot afford it, then it’s not soo prudent.

But if the land is for sale, shouldn’t land owner register the land for sale? The process he describes sounds exhausting and dated. It’s time to update the system and processes.

Good question, sometimes the landlords or owners don’t have the resources to register the land. That’s the problem

You are right. However, the land system down here is a bit different to deal with as most of the lands are owned by families, not Government..
