When one family found a sick baby raccoon, they refused to let him die. Instead, they dedicated themselves to his care in the hope of releasing the animal back into the wild. But one year after his rescue, they had a huge shock in store.
Kat Wagg is an animal lover. In fact, she believes that she has a special bond with wild creatures and can instinctively understand their needs. So, when she and her family encountered an ailing raccoon one day in 2010, she knew that it needed their help.
The animal in question was in a bad state, as the Wagg family discovered him infested with parasites. And among the parasites were two big botfly larvae that had taken up residence in his ear. That wasn’t the raccoon’s only problem, however.
According to Wagg, the poor animal was suffering from abscesses and some injuries as well. He had also become severely dehydrated. They consequently went to local wildlife officials to see what could be done to help him.

40 years ago we found a blinded starving opossum. We treated his eyes and the wounds healed. But since he couldn't see we couldn't release him. Long story short, he lived with us for two years and slept in our bed. He he learned to use a litter box and liked to be hand fed.
    We still miss him.

Yup-they're lovely until they bite you and you have to get 5 or 10 stitches and possibly a rabies shot, or at least a tetanus shot.
Wake up for Gods sake. They're one of the PRIMARY carriers of rabies, along with skunks and foxes. let wild animals be what they were intended to be, which is wild.

@@edchevalier269 It depends on whether you get them while young and teach them to live with you. The only reason they're the primary carriers of rabies along with skunks and foxes is because little to no research is done for vaccines for these creatures, Ironically if you didn't stereotype them as carriers of rabies more people would have raccoons and as such more research would be done.
Even if they were to bite you and give to a bunch of stitches, what difference is there with any other pet? My dog gave me a massive fucking scar but I didn't complain because I love him and it was worth it to take care of such a beautiful animal. If laws allowed it I'd also have a fox or a raccoon, and take care of them just the same.

My mother and I rehabilitate raccoons for the love of it. They can either be extremely lovey, kind of lovey, independent, or extremely wild. You have to accept and appreciate each personality, as you do a child. I appreciate him taking care of the raccoon while it was a baby, but after they are weaned off the nipple/bottle and have rabies shots (about 6-8) months old they are ready to be released and should be. They are wild animals. If you ever find baby raccoons, please call your local wildlife rescue facility and help as much as possible.

Just be careful. Remember that she said he caused her to get 5 stitches in her hand. Raccoons have LARGE teeth, and they do bite. They also carry rabies, as do foxes. Wild animals are best left alone. I won't say that a very occasional rescue isn't warranted, but for the most part wild animals need to be left to be just that: wild. it is what they are. I've seen tourists here trying to get close to a moose cow with a calf. It's close to insanity. A moose, as well as a deer, will either stomp or gore you respectively. It is their protective nature, and it shouldn't be taken for granted. Wild animals are inherently dangerous, even something as "cute" or as small as a Raccoon.

All we humans can do is try to help. An injured or sick animal needs help just like we do. We must try to help, do the best to comfort, heal and love gods creature. Just like with humans. Sometimes we win. Sometimes we loose. Its the love we share with them that is the most important thing. Giving comfort and love, we receive comfort and love in return. They feel the love. Most important thing..

    • @edchevalier269
      @edchevalier269 Před 6 lety +4

I agree, and they do sense that many of us would not harm them. But they also know humans as predators, and they're right to know that. We are. I raraly ever encourage a wild animal to lose it's fear of humans because at some point they'll meet one who will kill them, sometimes for the sheer pleasure of simply killing. I've worked with guys like that in the past. They make my skin crawl.

While I agree in some cases others not so much. Lions, Tigers, etc.. yeah of course. But some animals have proven they can be domesticated and their quality of life certainly seems good. Neither you or they can accurately make that statement. How do any of you know he DIDN'T have a congenital heart defect? There was no autopsy or necropsy done to determine cause of death. Without that, you're all just pissing into the wind. Not one of you ACTUALLY knows, but here you are stating that you KNOW it was the vaccine. Not one of you actually has a friggin clue, and you're all to ignorant to realize it.

I was in the mountains and was seated 20 feet away from a group of raccoons eating food prepared by the homes owners nightly for the little guys. They were peaceful except when I moved too quickly. It was 40 degrees cold in the woods so I was a bit cold but none of the little guys would come over to warm me up. So I get my animal love from a no kill shelter in Los Angeles. It is amazing how the dogs and cats cuddle with me every time I sit down in the shelters many rooms. Loving animals is a real treat for them as well as me. 😍😺😻😼👣🐶🐶🐩🐿️🐻🦆🦆🐧🐧🐌🐟🐟

Wild animals have personality too if nothing else they respond to regular familiar faces and can become attached as well. How could we assume that wild animals don't have compassion the same as domesticated animals. It could be love or just a level of trust that is unusual and uncharacteristically powerful. Thank you for loving your pets.

I love racoons. I had a flight of stairs and a big landing before I went into my kitchen. They would come up and look in my door and I would give them a treat. They had their water dish there too. After awhile they started to bring up their young. When I gave them a treat they would always grab my had and smell it before taking the food. Later on...they came into my kitchen..at that time about eight of them. They would sit around me while I gave them a peanut butter sandwich. They would get them one at a time and take them to their big water dish. I never petted them ever nor did I corner them. I enjoyed them very much.. sometimes I would sit there in the evening in bare feet but when they started sniffing my toes I wore shoes from then on. What sweet faces! Sorry to hear of your racoon. That is so sad.

Raccoons are kind at that halfway point between being “wild” and a pet. Each one is different, so they need a way to go in and out. I know people that have had them. They are really neat.

I raised two orphaned raccoons. I didn’t have any problem returning them to the Wild because I didn’t try to make them my pets. I provided them with food and shelter until they were old enough to make it on their own. They came back to visit once but when they didn’t get a handout they moved on.

    • @gabbylewis9030

Is it like allergic reactions? Or is it a reaction, from the animal being a carrier of the virus and somehow the vaccine entering the body interacts with the actual virus? Just asking, cuz I read that raccoons aren't only rabies carriers, but they are also distemper carriers as well

Think of the thousands of human babies killed everyday by abortion. Ripped limb from limb by a "surgeon". I don't say that lightly; read their own accounts of how an abortion is performed. More than a few of them have documented this procedure in horrifying detail.
What do you think about that Hailey? If you're unaware of how these procedures are accomplished, then I suggest you google them. There's a very good one that was done in a Congressional hearing, and it's on video. I forget his name, but he detailed the procedure before Congress. it might be worth your while to watch it.
Then again, if you're one of those who believe that animals have higher status than humans, then there's little hope for you.
