I've been using Nikon since 2004. Each system has their pro's and con's, it is really up to what works for each photographer. It could also be that the thought of selling everything to switch systems could be a poor business choice especially if your shooting all year long. Bringing in a new system alongside as a test seems like a much better business choice. That being said, I'm sticking with Nikon until I retire. Currently using a Z9, ZF and D850 for backup.

I have had many hybrid cameras on the past 7 years, probably since 2020 I have not done memory back up for any professional jobs, a few caveats, I don't cheap out on memory cards, I don't pass memory cards from a camera to another without formatting them in the new camera before shooting. It will be better in DR. I shot with a Z6 and D850 but the Z6 III ill replace both. I do not need Z8/9 45mpx. Where I moved to 24 years ago it will take a long time before we see and Z6 III unless I fly back the US to get one that added $2000 it the cost. Everyone thinks I am crazy for still using the Z6 but it is me #1 body over D850 which is likely the best DSLR ever made but the low light performance, weight, image quality and my subjects are people so I do not need the latest AF system because I average 2 missed focus per 500 frames, which is better than my second shooters with later Canon and Sony users who brag about how much better AF they have....but the results betray them, I get the cards and do all the editing...color and AF , plus the Z lenses and low light performance the old Z6 is the better tool. A Z6 with a 85 1.8 or 1.2 just gets better results over a long shooting day, Same with studio work and my ballet and live theater work the files are just better. Some times I use a second editor on a long event like international economic forums with 8 days and 140 countries represented, there is a lot of frames to process, each single shop or video(I use a wireless boom for audio assistant, and a spotter, a girl who knows who everyone is so there is no mixup in names/countries represented. For me, Nikon has never failed me, so there is zero incentive to switch, no brand has the 50 1.2 and Plena or as true colors, consistent menu or low light performance. And never worrying about one failing. I do not hire seconds with Sony too flimsy in build, too little access to parts and no parts are available for cameras out of production.

I agree on the Nikon ergonomics and the way the grip feels. I shot a borrowed Sony A7r3 with a 100-400mm for a sporting event just to try it and the yes the grip with the weight of the lens (while not to heavy) where the zoom ring is required me to hold it closer to the body and made using the Sony more uncomfortable. My Z9 with the heavier 180-600mm I can easily walk around and hold all day without any issues. While it’s heavier, it’s just balanced and easier to hold.

So I have a D750 but I'm not a pro, I don't do weddings or anything. I just like photography, especially when traveling. I looked at the Z6/7 (II) before but I got the impression that it might not be an improvement in every way over my D750. AF-wise, for wildlife, it might be worse. I think the Z6 III speaks to me. It's not just the AF, but also the IBIS (Hudson Henry had a shot at 75mm and 1/2 sec that was sharp), and of course the other benefits like exposure preview and AF all over the frame. Also, the screen flips vertically as well, which I like for low angle portrait orientation shots. I just hope SnapBridge is reliable for geotagging since plugging a dongle into the accessory port would limit the movement of that screen. It's smaller and lighter than my D750 as well, which I appreciate.
I do wonder if it is overkill though. It is also not cheap for me; I bought the D750 used for GBP550. If I buy it, it will be by far the most money I've spent on a body. And then I have to get lenses as well. I know I could adapt my existing ones, but I want to at least get the 14-30, and then changing lenses becomes like juggling with the FTZ. Also I do occasionally do wildlife with a 100-400, for which I often have to crop. The Z6 III doesn't give any more leeway for that.
Another cost-related thing is insurance. Especially if I go traveling, it will be more expensive to insure new mirrorless gear. Besides that 14-30 I'd probably get the 24-120 and 100-400. Meaning it's several thousand pounds of gear. I'd also hate to think that that could make me a target for theft. I don't want to think about that all the time when traveling.
    Any recommendations?

Without any urgency, you might want to wait until the end of the year. Last year, the Z8 was released at $4000 USD, and by November it was on rebate at $3700. Last month, the price went down again to $3500. The Z6III may see some discounts at the end of the year.

There is a good Nikon interview at DP Review which was published yesterday. They acknowledge a lot of interesting things. I hope they don't forget their APS-C (DX) customers which are more like first time camera buyers. Don't leave that field to Canon R7 or Sony A6700 customers.

  • @HR-wd6cw

Since I invested in the Zf and Z8, I won't be getting the Z6 III (which I guess is a good option if you want both of those in a single camera, and as such, the Z6 III would be redundant for me, but I do still prefer to have two camera bodies anyway, one as a backup). So I think for the right person, the Z6 III makes sense. If you already own the Zf and don't need the video features, then you're not really losing out on much. The Z8 is obviously a Z6 III and more (mostly like a Z9 without the extra bulk/weight). For most people though I think if resolution is not a concern, the Zf or Z6 III will do (although since Nikon does claim the Z6 III is 20% faster than the Z6 II, does this mean it's say 10% faster than the Zf or what?)

    • @UnconventionalReasoning
      @UnconventionalReasoning Před 11 dny

With a Z9 or Z8, the choice of a second body between a Zf or z6III seems to be about operational uniformity. Does the photographer want two cameras which feel mostly the same, or is the dramatic difference appealing. It seems like Liam may prefer the Zf because it doesn't feel like his "work" cameras.

  • @UnconventionalReasoning

    The Zf is a stand-in for the FM3A! 😂
The Z6III vertical grip is different than any other, it's the MB-N14, the Z6II/Z7II use the MB-N11 and the Z8 uses the MB-N12.
I always appreciate when CZcams photography influencers emphasize the ergonomic benefit of the grip. Sometimes people think, if their wrist hurts, they want the camera without the grip, but the grip actually helps.
When Liam talked about "medium raw", is that the HE or HE* options? Or does it have a reduced megapixels raw option? Reading the "documentation", it seems that the medium image size only applies to the jpeg files, but it's easy to misinterpret the information. I know some of the DSLRs like the D850 had lower resolution raw files, but I thought Nikon dropped that in favor of the HE/HE*?

Hey Taylor and Liam; Usually I don't use much of the video featuers; How would you rate the ZF compared to the Z6 III in price/value and what's actually the benefit of the Z6III compared to the ZF in terms of the partially stacked sensor ? Basically I would say, the ZF is the perfect camera for me and I really love to carry it arround but still, sometimes I feel curious about comparing features of the newer bodys, but I can't see much of a reason to upgrade (Sorry, not a native speaker...best wishes from germany) thanks for your work

I shoot Nikon whole my life - they do not care to contact ppl who are loyal to the brand… my experience is they do not care for their loyal users at all… contrary to Leica or Sony. I’m really sad about it as i love Nikon.. but hey just don’t care as a company…. :( 25 years in - nobody proved me im wrong :( :(

I sold all my Nikon gear (which included the Z9), bought two A7IVs and eventually built out a full kit. I’m only really jealous of the ecosystem. I miss Nikon’s colors, didn’t like the weight of the faster primes, but love the Z8 being affordable. I wish Sony had an option like that. The A1 being $6500 is ridiculous.😊

The z6iii pretty much offers what a7s3 was offering other than low light, the zf for that style edc, the z9/z8 as the tank workhorse.
Z7 would prob be a hi-mp dream camera considering how z6iii came out , cant wait for z5ii aswell
