Growing a Mango Seed for 98 Days

- This video is compilation of footage from 98 days of mango seed growth. I started with an odd seed that was green around the root tip and used an indoor germination method that I had established with my honey mango growing series prior. I had to improvise around problems that surfaced along the way, and ultimately decided to grow my mango seedling exclusively indoors.
By day 15 couldn’t you just pot it up
his method was 'indoor germination"
Hydroponics?
Yes, he sure could have planted it a long time ago! Prolonging growing a mango this way is the reason why there were problems with mold and such! I have at LEAST two mango trees I started from pits over a year old now and they are doing GREAT! Not sure why Melvin went through all of this procedures for!
johnifly no just no
Mine 111 what part of no do you not understand?
Put my seed in potting soil kept it moist. once it got about a foot tall put it in the ground and it’s 6 feet tall in six months. Your method is absolutely ridiculous!
Make a video like mine of a mango seedling growing 6 feet in 6 months, then we'll believe you.
It’s pretty much planting 101. Put the pumpkin seed in a little cup in about a week or two it will be a little seedling . Transplant it in the ground, about 4 months later you will have big orange pumpkins.
@@TheMelvinWei hes probly right man bananas in the ground do that, bananas in a pot grow insanely slow for me, i think we need bigger pots lol its probly cause roots grow sideways in the ground and get more oxygen, not much we can do but try use wide pots or somethin i guess, sucks cause then ya cant move emmulberry may be the biggest example of this, mine in a pots been the same size for 4 years, onlya bucket sized pot 2
Jack pumpkin seed?
I tend to agree Jack, although this is his method that he wants to do. Makes no sense to me whatsoever!
Hi Melvin. We went to a mango farm in South Florida and bought 24 varieties of mangoes. Organic grown. Ive tried one of them called Duncan. Awesome taste. The farm is called Mango Men Homestead and they ship too except in California. Im saving the pit or seed and will follow your method.
Very interesting to watch! It might not be the easiest method but that doesn't really matter. I like this experimental approach that also keeps the gardener kind of busy and observing. Will start trying it as well!
Uh I just plant mine in soil left it outside watered it everyday and its growing beautifully... sooo idk why make this so complicated
Wendy Chaparro well it really depends on where you live
And if your soil is good or not because some people have bad soil
It's not a tutorial video, so stop complaining.
Polpo Giovanna that’s not complaining
Koete Kage well I tried
Very complicated method
thats what i like about his videos, the attention to detail is satisfying haha
@@veganchiefwarrior6444 Too MUCH detail though is no good! It's just not making sense to me this method that he'd doing!
@@johnifly i love it haha
Totally agree. I germinated my seed and planted it a pot and it is growing so nicely. This is way too complicated for nothing.
Abdo vitamins if a nine year old can do it (that’s me) And a root came then you can try it might die but it’s worth a try yes I cut it by myself too
i just tried the paper towel technique and my seed got really moldy, so now I'm going to try this! wish me luck!
How are your new seeds doing?
beautiful video... thank u for such a long and beautiful video. thank u. HUGE RESPECT FROM INDIA 🇮🇳
DISTILLED WATER? Incubator!!!! Here in Kolkata, we just plug a good quality seed into the soil and return at harvest time.
Fyi, checked your passionfruit videos. if you live in an apartment, try planting that seedling in the lawn at midnight or behind that parking space. Your neighbors will thank you later. ;)
Not everyone can grow mangos outdoors where they live. I use a sand method to grow mine and they're doing great.
K.
In the lawn? That poor thing get mowed
Or as an alternative you could just take the seed and put it into the soil. It's way easier and I also think that thats the one method the other 99.999999999999% of mango trees used.
Not everyone can grow mangos outside. I don't completely agree with his method, I use a different one myself but if it works for him then that's great.
Yeah if you live in a warm climate like I do it can definitely just go in the soil. Especially right now, it’s very humid and the summer is just starting.
@@midwestmangos2452 not outside but inside in a pot with soil
@@leroyrodgers6089 -Hi--Ive tried soil, in Miami, in the summer and the seeds got nothing but moldy....why is that??
I’ve tried 7 times with this method. None worked, I tried the paper towel method and it worked first time so, I don’t think this is the best strategy
Idk if anyone said this but keep your hydrogen peroxide in an opaque bottle as sunlight exposure degrades it and causes it to break down much quicker. I often will just stick a chemical resistant nozzle into the opaque H2O2 bottle directly or you can buy a cheap cleaner (LA's Totally Awesome cleaner at Dollar Tree or 99¢ Only Store for example) and rinse well/repurpose the spray nozzle. Regular nozzles break down too quickly. Walmart sells a spray version for under $2.
Loved the day to day updates!
Oh also something vital I learned to combat a mold problem. Apparently plants in high humid low air flow environments like bags or your bottle need to be "burped." Lol. So I started airing the plant out of its enclosed chamber once a day in the morning for 30 min give or take (sometimes up to an hour) and this essentially solved my prev mold probs.
Who here just lets the seed germinate then pots it???? Why does it have to be so complicated
me. I JUST TOSS IT IN SOIL AND IT GROWS 😂
There are different typos of mangos, had one like you, unfortunatly fungus eat it up. Some mangos (with these big leaves) are red and hanging down, once matured they turn green and stiff. Im currently growing my "green" mango, with straight green leaves from the start. Thanks for the series!
Thanks for watching Gregor! It seems like every mango seed starts off differently, they're sort of the opposite of Joshua trees which start the same but end up all different. It seems like once the leaves are thick and green and stiff they stay in the same position for good unless there's not enough water and they wilt.
I put a mango [edited to mango from papaya] seed in potting soil, worm castings and azomite and placed it outdoors. Beautiful growth . No need for so much plastic.
u got lucky ;)
you're talking about papaya. not mango seeds. the difference in the size means you usually can't use this method to grow papaya seeds.
That veiny texture looks like an iron deficiency, and the unnatural bending of the leaves and it’s slightly misshapen form could be a sign of a slight deficiency in calcium.
As it is supposed to have without the nutrition of the soil
i cant belive thats working so well usually you want the roots to be in the dark to help avoid algae growth n stuff, droopy leaves is overwatering or underwatering, veiny leaf necrosis is overwatering aswel
Yeah I didn't think growing in clear containers with the roots exposed to light would be good for the plant but in the mango's case it seemed to do no harm.
Granted, sunlight would be much more harmful than LED light because it's so hot and would dry out the roots.
Melvin Wei you don’t have a control plant I’m soil, I guarantee 1000% that your mango plant will be much happier and healthier than this mess.
Yes the light on the roots did major harm and the look of the plant shows this by how unhealthy it looks!
Even tho this isnt the best method. I really appreciate how you document everything
Also, plants need a lot more than just red and blue. Google info on the effects of various Spectra of light on plant growth. A wide spectrum white light made for plant growth will do much better than those red/blue lights at keeping the plant healthy. Green and other colors all benefit the plant as well.
And at 16:55 all mangos have slightly droopy leaves, especially when they're young enough to not even be green yet. Those leaves looked perfectly healthy to me at the time.
Your mango looks healthy and has so many roots.
why not 100 days?
@Derpy Old Guy your profile picture speaks for you. lmao
Cos it died
Probably just nitpicking but I would call it the embryo rather than stem cells, especially since none of those cells have fully specialized into the stem yet.
That being said thanks for sharing your process on growing this mango, love seeing how others do it.
I love the comprehensive and scientific observations on this.
i don't spray my seeds down at all, I think that just helps promote the mold. From my attempts at germinating I found the seeds just need to have contact with anything wet or moist and that's all it needs. I think you're better off leaving the seed to dry and hydrating the roots.
I sure don’t see pink purplish root in your video. I am going to try your method.
Awesome montage! Good to see the red and Green led lights did a huge umprovment !!
Melvin, what is the reason the seed become green? Green means it does photosynthesis. How about experimenting that LED light from the start as soon as the seed becomes green? Without LED from the start as soon as the seed become green (sorry that I write the whole thing again, wasting your time?)
I don't know what purpose the seed endosperm has is being green. I assume that it's photosynthesizing.
How to grow a mango the hard way with 189 extra steps, you can do it too!
Hi Melvin
Got a mango up-date? Would like to see you graft a known variety onto it. Scion prep work etc.
I'm gathering up footage every few days for an update
I am confused why he poured out the water at the bottom then immediately put more in
Good. I should've suggested that method to you on the original mango tree series you did a few months ago if your be planning to do it again...?
I'm on about day 14 and mine is a little behind where yours was at that day but it's doing great! thanks for the video. I'm hoping for mine to grow! I need a light for my lemon trees. I'm hoping when I look for one I can find an affordable one. I need one very very soon. I may be able to put my trees outside but winter will be here before we know it
dont just say it is complicated. there is always a reason. he does this to make sure he gets the best growth and others from his plants.
Can you experiment with a pomegranate seed?
Cuttings are best tbh took some from my home in India to grow in the UK and got first fruit last summer, although they were a lot smaller than what they produce over there. They were also quite sour as well but that was expected for first fruit.
I did pomegranate seeds and have found they are much, much easier to grow. They seem to go dormant in the winter, and then will sprout back up bigtime the next spring.
I can take pics and show you if you want
@@Merknilash have u gotten fruit yet?
@@Merknilash the main issue is that growing from seed will typically give you hybrid trees that don't have the same characteristics as the parent tree. The fruit might not even be edible, too bitter, to flesh on the seeds, etc. Cuttings really works best for reliable strong plants when it comes to pomegranates.
Midwest Mangos you’re right - I am just doing it for fun
After watching your vids I grew a bunch of seeds and put them outside as saplings in the spring with nice mild weather
They all died at various stages except one which then died for no reason after getting maybe 2 ft tall
Many thanks... wonderful demo of patience & perseverance...
Thanks John!
Every time u say there’s mold and it need to dry out u start spraying that damn bottle 🤦🏽♀️
If he added peroxide to the water, it would help control mold.
I took a seed and put it in a pot with soil, inside next to a window and after a few weeks it germinated and now it is growing really fast so you don't have to do all of this stuff, bearing in mind I'm in england
I did the same thing, what do we do in the winter?
@@amjidali588 well mine is on a window shelf that gets the most sun and then under that is a radiator so it will not die of frost but Im going to keep checking on it, but if it starts to get unhealthy then move it somewhere else
MashED_PoTatOes I’m thinking it does get cold at night and if it’s by a window especially in winter it could die, I’m thinking of getting a grow box for it :)
@@amjidali588 I don't have one of them unfortunately but I can buy something if the worst comes
Dry the husk, cut open, plant the seed in dirt and keep moist.
I jist planted mine tonight. I dried it for a couple of days and cut it open and removed the seed, I removed the brown papery layer also. I planted it in a pot with soil.
Very thorough! Did you only use the miracle grow/vitamin solution once? Also, do you think a HEPA air filter in your closet would have benefited?
When are you supposed to put the plant in soil?
I wonder if that mold is actually induced by the plant themselves as a way to help with its nutrition, like some fungus help trees in the wild to exchange nutrients between the soil and the plant. I know some fungus in general may just be benign.
Mangoes are VERY SLOW GROWERS so I wouldn't be worried about rushing to put fertilizer on them just yet. The tree is still relying on the cotyledons that made up the seed so fertilizing is not needed right off the bat!
Melvin did you ever figure these guys out?
Couple years ago you were trying to grow these and I was too, watching your vids, and I thing I went through about 7 seedlings that sprouted and 6 of those died, and then the 7th died later on and I never could figure out why or wtf was wrong.
Hi, I think I finally have mango seedlings figured out with my latest series where I grew one in a tube. I'll be releasing a second episode soon. I got a second of leaves to grow!
My mango grew in three days after setting it up so it could touch the surface of my aquarium, it grew so good that the leafs already coming out
It's NORMAL for the mango leaves to droop. Eventually they perk up! I would have had it potted up in planting mix by now! Too much fooling around with the plant. I pot my mangoes up once the root has come out and it knows how to grow from there. ;-)
HI Melvin.... Excellent Video... I have one mango seed with a very nice stem and leaves that has been growing under grow lights. I also have two other mango seeds that i am actually doing the paper towel method. I deeply feel that the mango tree is a very beautiful tree. Have you ever considered Hydroponics,,, anyhow, as soon as i get some roots from my mangos, I am going to experiment it with Hydroponics.... Great Video... thank you for Sharing.
Hi Eddie, thanks for watching my video. Mango seedlings are some of the most beautiful plants I've seen; I never tire of looking at them. I'm afraid of drowning my plants with hydroponics, thus I just did this airponics/towelponics approach. Let me know if your mango seedlings grow with hydroponics, I'm very interested in the results!
Hey Melvin... I just looked at my two mango with paper towel method... and one is dead due to Mold, and the other looks like the stem is growing. I am going to put this seed into a container with water only, until the root is big enough for hydroponics. I am in Zone 6, and I am going to get several mangos before i dont see them anymore at the stores. I have also built a DIY grow light table, since i am also growing 6 citrus trees and 4 are from seed, and its growing. My biggest pain is germinating a cherry seed. Its exhausting, but i am not giving up. Melvin, I learned from your video about your peroxide. Is this straight peroxide or its a mix that you did with the Hydrogen peroxide? And does this eliminate mold from appearing? If so, this is what i can probably use for my Cherry seeds. Again... Thank you for a great video... Thanks for sharing.
I just used the cheapest store bought hydrogen peroxide (3%) that's used to treat wounds and diluted it with distilled water 5 or 6 times down to 0.5-0.6%. It keeps those mold fruiting bodies, the grey wisps, from appearing for the first few days after but if the roots are constantly surrounded by wet matter then they'll rot eventually anyway. I thought that hydrogen peroxide, because it breaks down into pure oxygen, would prevent roots from drowning, but it doesn't seem to work out that way. I've seen videos made by urban farmers who use hydrogen peroxide like I do to germinate little seeds for growing microgreens. I'm sure I could use a more concentrated solution, plant tissue is tougher than animal tissue so maybe 3% sprayed on would be much more effective against mold.
Melvin Wei ... check out MissOrchidGirl on You Tube. We both use 3% HOHO. I am constantly spraying tissue germinated seeds.
You should grow a ocotillo from seed, I myself was planing to grow some from seed
Did it start getting green faster after you sprayed the roots with peroxide? I’m sure they loved that.
I have this sugar water excretion on the leaf as well. Any reason why this happens?
Hey Melvin great to have you backI have a few suggestions to try to grow grapefruit tree or cherry tree thanks God bless love to see more videos in the future
Thanks Ethan, those are interesting suggestions for future series!
Yeah cherry
I stuck a grapefruit seed in the ground here in Pensacola and it grew!
Hi Melvin, please answer this. I grew a mango seedling just that and I repotted it after 2 months, there were like 20 leaves so far. It was grown initially in paper towel, later in a small pot, then to a large pot, so the plant was able to photosythesize from the 3rd week, But while repotting them after 2 months, while digging up carefully, I was surprised to find that the plant was still attached to the embryo?? that seed thing it grows out of but had so many roots that went beyond the embryo downards. Unfortunately while repotting, just the embryo ( the pit or seed came undone from the roots, but the plant has plenty of roots) I dont know if the plant can survive now that the seed came off after 2 months, it was my mistake I should have handled it gently but it was more of an accident. I tried to reattach the seed back to the root system, but the root system was too big it was not possible. I just planted the entire plant with roots and about 25 green leaves on top, MINUS the seed which came undone. Will this plant survive? My question is, how long do mango plants after a month of sprouting with green leaves still rely on the seed even after having a very complex and well develop root system?
"When the tip turns pink..."
It seems like the seed has been treated. Mines are all rottening and mold just come and shit on it... How does that seed maintaining the moisture you spray that much? without getting mold or rottenning... That is amazing.
Mango seeds are really clean because after you peel away the seed coat there's no pulp with sugar to rot...but many mango seeds look bad to me, the ones that are black in large regions should be thrown away I think.
You need to peel of brown paper thing on mango seed it grows mold
I presume when the Mangoes are transported, if they were in the 5~10 C refrigerator for the sake of preservation process, then they won't germinate due to the low temperature exposure? I am experimenting it now. The seed was in 5 hours refrigerator and I didn't use distilled water rather a bit warm tap water. But I had better buy H2O2 and dilute it to use it like you. I don't expect it to be germinated due to exposure. Also, I had to buy the 2 sprays at a dollar shop. ^_^
Appreciated your scientific methodology!
what red and blue light did you bought. Can you please tell the name
Very nice! 💚🌱💚🙌
Wonderful. I love my mango tree it works. Thanks from Portugal
Brown paper you have to peel it off it makes mold
Yeah
This one looks better than the over fertilized potted one lol.
H2O2 should be kept in a not see through container, as it reacts with light and turns into reglar water
Great project
This Is a great deal of work.
Is this how commercial growers raise food?
You might have over fertilized your pervious attempts. I’ve heard that over fertilizing early on can kill a plant. With this plant you didn’t fertilize it and it’s growing very well.
Agreed, the mango seed itself is primarily starch and oil with several other essential nutrients, so keeping the seed attached to the plant will prevent any need to fertilize until the seed is almost completely eaten away by the plant.
36:13 it means your plant's stem gonna be a trunk
do you know if it needs the mango seed to further grow? mine fell off while is was replanting it🥲
If it used most of it and started turning brown then no you don't need it
How about trying with hydro-gel instead of microfiber cloth. Can you make potting after this ~ how long it will survive?
15:30 haha. He is talking about weed. lawls
You should put in soil before it stays gets addicted staying indoor and besides as I see the leaves it’s asking for it to be in soil already
I use this type of lighting for my avacado trees
Put the pits after washing in a plastic jar of water with hydrogen added. Put in the sun. Change water every 3rd day. When it's opening up & awelling uo, bury in soil pot & water. Daily watering ppaced in the sun. Expct to see the sprout in a fortnight.
I am making one but my mom told me to leave it in Cold Water ford for a month and then plant it will it work??
Why do you take so long to put the plant into soil.
That one was never meant to go into soil, I just wanted to see it grow soilless.
Really enjoyed this video. Thank you for sharing :)
Great work!!!
Sahale Snacks sponsorship coming soon? Haha
All this for a mango tree???
Do you have any update on this tree?
will the fruit from this seed have the same tasting fruit of the parent tree? Will it be a clone of the origional tree?
yes. they're are true to seed
@@marcusyong4840 no there not it has different generics and won't be original

How many hours per day did you expose mango shoot to the LED photosynthesis light?
About 16 hours a day.
How often did you give miracle grow? Once a week, twice a week, or once a month?
Only once in the whole series thus far.
This is so cool!

i tried this way at first i seen roots but no shoots why ?
i used to pick the seed and look at it
Did you use the same methods and have around the same temperature indoors? It should germinate and grow a shoot, maybe you got a bad seed, if you try again make sure the mango wasn't refrigerated or frozen beforehand, otherwise I can't imagine why it wouldn't grow.
@@TheMelvinWei yes sir i used the same methods water every day i put it inside a draft but i picked the seed a lot of times maybe this one of the troubles i caused for it other thing is it grow a roots but no shoots so i moved it i actually fill up a compost and start grow it in and the compost dicompost the seed and went failure
