  • For our latest jaunt, Erin and I ditched the kids and jumped the pond for a weeklong river cruise through the rolling countryside and sprawling vineyards of Provence and Burgundy, France.
    Friends and family had been raving about these more intimate, upscale, adults-only cousins of the typical cruise experience, but do they live up to the Lockwood standard? In this episode, you’ll get to experience our stateroom, every nook and cranny of the ship, the local vibes at various ports-of-call, and plenty of Michelin-starred French dishes, French cheeses, French sweets, and of course-French wine.
    This trip was especially luxurious because it combined some incredible Polaris upgrades through our latest status as Platinum United MileagePlus frequent fliers, as well as travel booked through our American Express Business Platinum Card benefits with Amex Travel.
    A big "thank you" to the amazing crew at Amadeus River Cruises for a stellar voyage and to our travel group with Inspirato Pass, who offered this experience through our membership.

    ABOUT US.
    We’re the Lockwoods: a family with 3 kids, 5 careers, and endless passion for adventure. Two years ago, we decided it was time for Phil's ad agency to abandon the in-person, 5-day workweek. So they 86’d the office and work hours, allowing our own family to start traveling almost constantly. We now work, school, and explore in a different place every week-from our own mountain and beach homes to exotic villas, resorts, and yachts around the world. As we experience and support diverse cultures, we hope to inspire more families to design a life of freedom and adventure.
    Because there’s a new American Dream. It’s one that’s void of templated expectations, templated career paths, templated education, templated families, templated homes, and templated lives. Freedom is no longer an American tagline-it’s just the new, global way of life.
    Every day that you spend doing something that doesn’t fulfill you to your core, you’re living your life on pause. You’re deferring genuine family time with no guarantee that there will be a tomorrow or a someday. Some people follow that mentality their entire lives. We’ve chosen to never live that way again.
    We appreciate you following our journey. The more our channel grows, the more time we can spend traveling to more locations, contributing to these cultures, highlighting local businesses, and sharing inspiring stories from these communities. So please consider liking, commenting, and subscribing so that you can stick with us for the long haul.

    Let their experience be a lesson to you - arrive two days earlier than your cruise. not only will this allow you to lose some of that jet lag, but if there are travel issues, you do not have that angst of not making your cruise departure. And to lose the jet lag, get out in the sun and see whatever city/town/village you are in. Walk a lot!

    • @AlwaysBeChanging
      @AlwaysBeChanging  Před rokem

      It was definitely a lesson for us. One I hope others learn from. However, we needed to cut it close because we were leaving our kids with my parents for 11days and didn't want to extend that anymore than necessary. But anytime we do a cruise with our kids we arrive a day before.

    husband speaking - Been there , done that but we missed the start of our cruise because the Air France flight out of Seattle. I could go through the whole
    story but not worth the heart ache of remembering that 2 day trek. One help for us was one other family going on the cruise with us kind of gave us hope. The
    wife could scream at the travel agents louder than us. NO one really told us that for an international trip, go early at least one day. One bit of good luck when we
    got home, our travel agent fought for us and we actually got our first flight fare back. Doesn't help with the stress we felt at the time. We almost said the heck with it
    and would have just gone back home. I didn't see the children this trip probably a good thing.

    if you wanted to stay on the ship and others got off do you have to get off so they can clean

      Assuming you mean clean the room? No, you can stay on the ship. There are several other rooms and activities you can do on board. Plus, you can always request to skip a room cleaning.

    yeah, most people aim to arrive a day before the cruise due to unreliable air travel.

    • @AlwaysBeChanging
      @AlwaysBeChanging  Před 2 lety +2

      Yes, that would’ve been ideal and we would have preferred that under normal circumstances. We chose to risk it because we were leaving our kids with my parents for 10 days and we didn’t want to extend that any longer than necessary. Is still young and we are not used to being so far away for such a long time. Whenever we have done a cruise with our kids we’ve arrived the day before. I’m so glad we made an example for everyone on what not to do 😆 😊

    So all the food on cruise ship was free, including excursions and food during those excursions as part of Inspirato pass ?

    • @AlwaysBeChanging
      @AlwaysBeChanging  Před rokem

      The food on the cruise was included, including drinks and spirits during meals, but when you leave the ship to venture on your own you’re responsible for those meals. They provide meals on the ship even when it’s docked, so you don’t have to spend meals off the boat. There were a few different guided excursion packages to choose from (we chose the smallest one but found we enjoyed doing our own thing) but I can’t remember how much those packages were offered at. I hope that answered your question.

    Guys experts like yourselves why on earth did you arrive the day of your cruise. Someone who cruises often ALWAYS arrive a day before cruising
    No stress
    There will always be delayed , something comes up
    It’s not worth it
    So next time guys arrive a day before 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    • @AlwaysBeChanging
      @AlwaysBeChanging  Před rokem

      We do arrive the day early when we travel with our kids. But since we were leaving the country and leaving our kids for longer than we had before, we didn’t want to extend that. It was stressful but worth it to take the risk. We’re so happy it worked out!

      Of course :) The cruise line is Amadeus. We booked through our travel club, Inspirato. It cost us less than $2500 for two people through their monthly Pass membership. If you want to learn more about that you can visit followabc.com/pass. We book 95% of our travels in our episodes through them. Let me know if you have more questions.

      I disagree. Dramas are good things for those who hadn’t thought to do things like fly in a day or two early. You may have already known this, but there are many first-time river cruise travelers who will benefit from these stories. And nothing is stopping you from fast-forwarding through that.

    Having assigned tablemates can be not good. Random seating acquaintances works better. I would not do this cruise because of assigned seating. All these cruises are otherwise similar no matter the ship company.

    • @AlwaysBeChanging
      @AlwaysBeChanging  Před 2 lety

      We had a fantastic time and since we get along with almost anybody, we were thrilled with our table mates. That said, it wouldn't have been any big deal to request a change. We made enough friends from other tables that we ended up table hopping a bit anyway. It was a great experience.
