Pretty awesome invention. If your enemies only shoot regular sized arrows, they won't be able to shoot yours back at you, and will be scratching their heads trying to figure out how you launched such a tiny arrow in the first place.

Pyeonjeon is a long-range sniper arrow. It is an arrow that, similar to a bullet, is rather weak when fired from an intermediate distance, and becomes more powerful the farther it flies.
So, the Joseon army used to carry jangjeon (normal arrow) separately and use arrows suitable for the situation.
Won Gyun, Admiral of the Joseon Navy, once said, "Shoot a pyeonjeon at long range, shoot a jangjeon at medium range, and use a sword or club in close combat."

    • @user-mg1zb5rq1h
      @user-mg1zb5rq1h Před 7 měsíci +6

PyunJun arrow is used with TongAh.
PyunJun arrow length ( 30cm = 1 feet ) is half of normal arrow.
PyunJun arrow weight is 20% lighter than normal arrow weigh.
But because PyunJun arrow speed is much faster than normal traditional bow arrow, PyunJun arrow penetration power is much higher than normal traditional arrow and PyunJun arrow has much more linear trajectory and much more long range capabilities, that means it was also used as a sniper arrow.
PyunJun arrow speed is 70~90 meter/second which is comparable to modern compound bow arrow.
When launched, TongAh still remains at the site, therefore the enemy misunderstands that arrow was not launched.
Because of small size and faster speed, the enemy's eye cannot easily capture the flying PyunJun arrow.
According to Korean history documents, the enemy armies trembled with extreme fear for Korean PyunJun arrow.

A patient teacher who gives a lot of options in how to shoot and starting out. I haven't been able to start thumb draw like he suggests unfortunately. But have spent time practicing drawing with my thumb for several weeks just drawing and holding the bow before I ever shot an arrow with it to build up tendon strength and am taking it easy to begin.

It's like an arrow specialized for combat in a national all-out war, and it's generally a pain in the ass to use.
The advantages are longer range, the enemy can't reload, and most importantly, increased productivity.
Since we're going to be firing sequentially from the ramparts, we'll have plenty of time to reload.
Even arrows shot by the enemy that are in bad shape can be reused with a little tinkering. You don't even need arrowheads, just sharpen them in front of you and roast them over a fire. The freedom of arrow length is a huge productivity booster.
Surprisingly, it's not common for trees to grow as straight as the original arrow length.
However, palm-length ones are quite common in whole tree systems. You can even shoot chopsticks.
In an all-out war, everything is always in short supply. If you have the materials and time to make a decent arrow, something like a chopstick would be many times more productive. And if you get hit by bare flesh, the chopstick is going to get wounded and die anyway.

Pyeonjeon, a traditional Korean bow, is an arrow made to prevent it from being recyclable in combat against enemies. And because the arrows were small in combat, it was very difficult to tell whether you shot them or not, so there were many advantages in combat.

Once it was a top secret. Compared to the regular arrows, these baby arrows are deadlier than regular ones at a long range. Its penetration power shows at longer range, longer distance. The longer it flies it has more penetration than regular ones. Should test at a longer distance from the target.

The advantage of this arrow is that it can fly further because it is light, and furthermore, from the enemy's point of view, it was inevitable because the flying arrow was not visible. Tong-ah seems to be a brand name and is called 'Pyeonjeon' or 'Ah-ki-sal.' 'Pyeonjeon' means a small arrow, and 'Ah-ki-sal' means a baby arrow. Because this is a killing arrow used in actual warfare, it's not retrievable, and so it's probably been manufactured in a way that makes it mass-produced rather than durable.

these traditional korean arrows have much much wider nocks without a “clicking” point. so you gotta be extra attentive to keep the arrow nocked. or install thicker knocking point.

    • @notapplicable531
      @notapplicable531 Před rokem +1

The wider spacing between tines of the nock has to do with the fact that the material used for hornbow strings, until recently, was a natural fibre and not as strong as the HMPE or other polyester materials. I have several strings made of this natural fibre and, in order to have a string capable of handling the poundages of hormbows, they require over 100 strands. The strands are very thin, but you still require the large number of them. A string made of say BCY Spectra 652 only uses 30 to 36 strands and is about 3/4 as thick. The difference is made up using two servings, one made of regular serving material and the other made of a single strand of string material.

  • @notapplicable531

I wouldn't worry about the damaged pyeon jeon. From what I can see, a bit of one nock tine is missing as is a part of the side of the nock's body. The sinew wrap is also gone. All three are repairable or still useable.
First the nock tine. As long as the tine has at least half of its width and all of its length, there should be no problem nocking the pyeon jeon. I had a bamboo arrow in the same condition and used it with no negative affects. Just file or sand off any rough edges or surfaces.
For any missing wood in the tine's body, make up a mixture of fine sawdust and wood glue and fill in the missing area. Sand off any excess to shape.
Replacing the sinew could be a small problem if it has been lacquered. Remove the existing /remaining sinew and replace/wrap the nock with more sinew or, if you don't have sinew, string material. Lacquering the wrap is an option, one that I would recommend.
On another note. If you have bamboo arrows, or wooden ones for that matter, and they get damaged in the front half, it is fairly easy to make them into pyeon jeons. Remove the point, cut the back half to the length desired and put the point on. I have a dozen made in this manner sitting on my desk at this moment and all are quite usable.
    Best and enjoy.

It was for war and was a secret weapon.
I did not want to reveal the secret of this bow to the enemy.
If you do not have a launcher called Tong-a, even if the enemy acquires an arrow, it cannot be reused.
It has a much longer range than normal arrows, and it is said that it was difficult to see them flying due to its small size.
Enemies from a distance see that Tong-a remains after shooting an arrow, and they mock that they do not know how to shoot a bow properly, and they are said to have been hit by baby arrows.

I was also going to make a sarcastic comment, that now you have shown us a great many disadvantages to using this baby arrow system (not the least of which, being that you can shoot yourself in the arm), but never a single advantage. But now I have read the comments, and I understand better.

About 20 years ago, the Korean government discarded the McCune-Reischauer system of Romanizing Korean words. That system, frankly, made a mess of pronouncing Korean words. but I won't dwell on that too much. One thing the government implemented was the use of "eo" to represent the sound of a "U" as in umbrella and not as in neon. Now the Korean spelling for this arrow is 편 전 . ㅓ would be Romanized as eo; ㅕ would be yeo. What you get is the spelling pyeon jeon. While pyun jeon is not incorrect, for the sake of consistancy, using eo in the first word would be preferable. Pyun could be confused and pronounced py-oon.
