The majority of actors who worked with Elvis, many of them famous actors themselves, said that Elvis had natural talent. The problem wasn't with Elvis, the problem was with some critics not being able to get over the fact that it was Elvis Presley so they judged him more harshly; and, several of the scripts weren't up to Elvis's abilities as they were essentially 'musical comedies where boy meets girl.' That being said, Elvis played serious roles in several of his movies & all of his movies were a fun watch for the majority of his audiences.

I personally think that Elvis was great at acting. He definitely was a natural, and many of his co-stars have said how impressed they were with his acting.
Elvis hated the films he did. Apparently his favorite film was King Creole (also my favorite). It was a somewhat dramatic role and Elvis did drama so well. He wasn't given the opportunity to showcase his acting skills because of the films he was forced to do. There is actually a clip where Elvis is talking about his film career and he explains how he had no say in the films he acted in.
People need to see past the mediocre films he HAD to do, and should really look at his acting on its own.
For someone who had no acting classes, he was still pretty good. With the right role, he would have lit up the screens even more than he already did.
I will link the interview if you want to check it out.

Elvis was a natural at singing AND acting having had no formal training in either. His films are entertaining and include comedies and westerns, but he was never allowed to grow as an actor with good scripts so got pigeonholed and eventually became disillusioned with Hollywood. Mind you if he had succeeded we would never have got the 68 comeback TV special!

I am 73 years old and when I was a teen in the 60's, I got to see a few of Elvis's movies. At that time we teens loved them because we got to see Elvis. The movies were like that back then. I even loved Doris Day movies. We teens then especially liked Viva Las Vegas. But I always liked clean cut movies, no thrillers for me. I would like to see the one you're watching.

You should watch Flaming Star, a movie in which he plays a half white/half Native American character. It is an important movie on racism and one with very few songs in it. Elvis had a more meaty role in this one. Some movie quotes from his character (Pacer)
Pacer Burton: All Ma and me ever got from Whites is mean looks and don't get uppish with us.
Roslyn Pierce: Oh, that's not true.
Pacer Burton: You were the worst. You made me feel it the worst. When I was little I liked you a lot. You were the only girl I ever liked a whole lot. But ever since you've been old enough to know, you never looked at me once without saying something in the back of your head. "He's Kiowa. Clint's all right, but watch out for Pacer."

Elvis was a great actor so natural had no acting training he could do serious roles his first was Love Me tender he wasn’t the lead in that one but it was a good start and showed how he could be a serious actor my favorite movie he stared in was King Creole it was his last movie before he was drafted. He also stared in Loving You & Jail House Rock before he was drafted. Loved all of them like Follow that Dream really showed his comedic side he was hilarious in that movie. I really enjoyed them all & I own all of them and still watch them much better than most of the trash that’s out there now! And it did help that he was drop dead gorgeous & the looks he could portray in those movie musical’s was priceless.

This scene in G.I. Blues was so funny. Elvis was so good with comedy, but it's because he was naturally funny. But I really love him in a dramatic role. I really wish he was given the opportunity to choose his own roles, he would have been even more incredible. I have seen all 31 of his films, and King Creole is by far my favorite.

@@carolhayar3037 Just watched it now. I can definitely see Tom Parker refusing to let Elvis star in Thunder Road simply because he couldn't get an album out of it. It makes me so mad 😡 because that Parker's only ambition in life was making money out of Elvis. If he truly cared for Elvis, he would have let him choose his own roles instead of getting him tied up in those bulls**t musical roles he hated so much. Elvis clearly didn't put money first, as I'm sure everyone knows with how much he would give to others. He valued family, friends and happiness more than anything else, and we all know he wanted to separate his film career from his music career, so why the hell did Parker do everything in his power to make sure those two careers went together??? Money!!! 🤬
With West Side Story, Parker's reasoning that it wasn't good for the image of the King Of Rock 'n Roll is so pathetic..again, putting Elvis the Entertainer and Elvis the Actor as one person, one thing....instead of separating the two as Elvis wanted.
It makes me sick to my stomach hearing how many roles Parker turned down, and didn't even consult Elvis with regards to Midnight Cowboy.
Parker, in my opinion, was the worst thing that ever happened to Elvis. He held Elvis back so much...in films and in touring the world.
The Charlie and the Chocolate Factory one made me giggle.
OMG!! Elvis would have been brilliant in The Godfather. Elvis would have played a gangster so well....and the fact that he could have acted alongside Marlon Brando. 👀
I'm glad he mentioned King Creole, because it's my favorite Elvis film and I think he was brilliant in it. He had so much potential as an actor if just given the right roles. 💔

Elvis did 10-12 movies that I just love, love, love. The rest I just felt sorry for him that they stuck to the same formula and seemed to get cheaper and cheaper budgets and churned out 3 movies a year. He gave some amazing dramatic performances and could have been one of the greats if given better roles.

Jane H commenting … I saw this movie when it first came out at the picture theatre in my town here in New Zealand, but I can’t remember it, so I’m definitely going to go search for it & watch it again. Elvis said he never watched his own movies because he didn’t really enjoy acting in them. He wanted to be a serious actor, & obviously, he could have been a good one. It was Colonel Parker, his manager, that said he had to sing & dance in his movies, because that is what his fans would want to see. He had 9 years doing something he didn’t particularly enjoy doing, before his contract was up. But I actually think he was a pretty good actor, even in these relatively lightweight movies. I think he could have been a great actor in more serious movies, with the right training.

I would recomend watching GI Blues it's actually a pretty good Movie. KING CREOLE Was considered to be his best Movie but Jailhouse Rock, Flaming Star, GI Blues, Wild In The Country, Viva Las Vegas, Kid Galahad, Fun In Acapulco, Loving You, Love me Tender, Charro, & Change of Habit were some of his best but I enjoy Most of his Movies which were generally Light Hearted Musical Comedies. Only a handful or so were kind of MEH !
This was the first Movie Elvis made right after returning from his almost two year long deployment in Germany in the Army.
Actually Elvis was a really naturally Good Actor, When they gave him a good script. Unfortunatly for Elvis, the studio's were more interested in a quick buck and gradually slipped into giving Elvis uninspired scripts that were cheap to make with mediocre songs but still made money 💰 because Elvis was in them. Elvis once said it got so bad that he became physically ill over what these Movies would do to his career. He wanted to be taken seriously as an Actor but his Manager and the Studios never thought about what Elvis wanted. That's the way it was back then.

Elvis always reminded me of Cary Grant when it came to acting. I think if he had been given the right scripts he would have excelled but unfortunately, as in his singing career, he was contracted too long to the same routine when his manager found it made money. Great for Parker but it adversely affected Elvis.

King Creole is the best film he did, but G.I. There is a very interesting video called "Movies That Elvis Presley Almost Acted In" at czcams.com/video/DYykWVFeVGY/video.html -- it explains a LOT about what happened w-regards to some film possibilities & why he was never in some of the roles. There are also conflicting stories on why Elvis didn’t do "A Star Is Born": Linda Thompson said one thing, Sonny West said something different - you'll have to watch the video to know what each of them said. To me, conflicting stories only proves that information about Elvis has to be taken w-a grain of salt, even when it came from those people who were in his life for many yrs., whether
it was some of "the guys," girlfriends, house staff, etc.
I grew up seeing all his movies on the big screen when they came out in the theater, I liked a couple but not most.
