Converting the Bachmann "Connie" Consolidation DCC using the Soundtraxx Tsunami2 TSU-4400

  • A look at how we converted out 3 Bachmann outside frame consolidations or "Connie" to sound and DCC control using the Soundtraxx Tsunami2 TSU-4400.
This required totally removing all the factory wiring and starting fresh with a new wiring layout following Soundtraxx's wiring plan and wire color scheme. As I had never attempted to do such a thing it was a challenge and at times confusing. But Don, who has lots of experience with electronics as well as a track record rewiring large-scale locomotives using Soundtraxx systems went first on his Connie installing the Tsunami2 TSU-4400.
If you have been following the series, this is part ten on our series on rebuilding three of these GREAT Bachmann 1:20.3 scale locomotives. So far we tore down all three locomotives and installed new drive gears as the factory ones ALWAYS fail. We have repaired two of the tender wheel trucks as this is another common failure point on these locomotives, changes the couplers to AMS couplers as well as started adding extra details to the cab interior.
The conversion to Tsunami2 TSU-4400 proved difficult and confusing, but we hope to show our process of trial and many errors will help!

Hi. Oh it’s so confusing. I need to try the newer Bachmann with the plug in board options. But the idea of tearing out all the complicated Bachmann wiring and starting over….. and not go mad in the process.

Great explanation. Color coding is very important, especially when you have several wires pop up somewhere from the locomotive, if you need to redo something later, it will be very useful.
I would do one thing different: use special high temperature 3M double side tape. It was a MRH article about it some years ago, and as decoder can become hot, normal double side tape will deteriorate. It costs more than the normal, but the decoder is a lot more expansive!

Whew! As somebody who does a pretty reagular amount of DCC/Sound Omaha is in HO, I can completely sympathize on the the tediousness and time it takes very well done!! Completely agree with you, taking the time to color code and keep you wiring is incredibly helpful on the install and if you ever have to troubleshoot. I'm sure others have mentioned this, but any lighting function like the Firebox or Ashpan light can be set to turn on at random automatically instead of having to use a function button on your throttle. Probably have it in one of thier how-to videos. Also, don't know if you do your programming through the throttle but I'd recommend taking a look at JMRI - Java Model Railroad Interface. The Dakota programming tool on their makes everything so much easier since it's a literally menu tabs and you just click boxes the program the decoder the way you want it.

Yup! Don gave me a shopping list. Track one off the non existent turntable will be the programming track. And I have a thing deal to hook to the locobus to give me a USB connection. Now.. I have an old laptop but may get a basic pad and also connect it to the stereo for more music options. (I still play CDs.). No matter then load said software. Didn’t know I could make the flickering come on at random!! Cool!!

The Connie is coming along and looking really good. Getting through the wiring set up is the hardest part and you have done a great job. Wireing projects can some times overwhelm most people. Just take your time and draw the wire layout so you can understand it yourself. It doesn't matter about other people as long as you can grasp and under stand it for you. Before you know it they will be done and you will be looking back and enjoying them. Thanks for sharing this upgrade journey. I am at that point of wanting to change from dc to dcc. That is looking good. Soundtraxx are easy to change how each "light" can flicker as per the videos and tutorials on their CZcams channel. See the Hyperlight Effect in the full handbook - there is a flicker for ash pan and another for fire box, as they are LED need to add 128 on to the value. Smart firebox flicker is a good option.
