Cement Scenery on a Garden Railroad. - The Bridge Over the River Why? Part Two
Making quality scenery from mortar mix for our garden railroad. Tricks to make it look fantastic! While our outdoor railroad is built on benchwork to avoid keeling on the ground, this can be done on the ground.
On my old ground-level railroad I had a huge canyon six feet deep with a waterfall and a 25-foot-long trestle with all morter cliffs built by Steve Strebel. So, onto building fantastic-looking model railroad scenery on our large-scale outdoor model railroad.

There is one thing about using OO scale locomotives on HO track. Some locomotives, especially the larger ones like Pacifics will only run on Code 100 track. They will derail on smaller code switches. Ask me how I know! My smaller OO locos, like 0-4-0 and 0-6-0, are more forgiving, and I haven't had trouble with rolling stock. At least some, maybe all, of the newest OO locomotives are designed to run on Code 70 and Code 100 switches and track. At least that is what the manufacturers told me. I am about to order a couple, so fingers crossed. Love your videos!

I want to use small batches too but didn't know about mixing it first. (Aren't those 80 pound bags of mortar so fun to move around?) I'm going to put it in a trash can and mix it up first then use what I want and not get caught with a lot of mortar mix setting up before I'm ready to use it. Thanks again! Dale, Do you know what "kitty litter" (aka oil dry) is? You may not believe this, but it is the sludge from the waste water treatment plant, dried out and ground Way back in the 1950's the treatment plant, in my home town, would give away the stuff, A guy there would come with a dump truck and get a load, go home and bag the stuff up and sell it. He made quite a lot of money. Finally, the city figured out what he was doing and started charging for the stuff. That's the story I heard, any way, but that IS what "Kitty Litter" is made of. The rail road is looking better all the time. I am looking forward to seeing that bridge completed. ;-)

Dale: Thanks so much for this detailed information, but you did not touch on standard gauge and narrow gauge with the same scale, with each having a different gauge. Since 1987, I model G scale at 22.5 to 1, both SG and NG, much of it running on dual gauge track. Hyce did a video of my layout recently and you can see the size difference between NG and SG sitting side by side. Of course my NG is 1 and 3/4" gauge, meter gauge depicting 3 feet between the rails and the SG is 2.5" depicting 4' 8 1/2" between the rails. I refer my SG as Gauge 3 equipment. I think you should have some F standard gauge on your layout so that folks can see the difference between NG and SG trains of the same scale. Most folks are so use to looking at HO models, that when they see my G scale NG equipment, they think it is so big, until I bring out the UP Big Boy, at almost 6 feet long and sit it next to a NG Rio Grande C16! It is a real eye opening experience for them! Thanks so much for all you do for the model railroad hobby! Barry Bogs MMR
