- "O Little Town of Bethlehem" is a Christmas carol. Based on an 1868 text written by Phillips Brooks, the carol is popular on both sides of the Atlantic, but to different tunes: in the United States, to "St. Louis" by Brooks' collaborator, Lewis Redner; and in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Ireland to "Forest Green", a tune collected by Ralph Vaughan Williams and first published in the 1906 English Hymnal.
The text was written by Phillips Brooks (1835-1893), an Episcopal priest, then rector of Church of the Holy Trinity, Philadelphia, and later of Trinity Church, Boston. He was inspired by visiting the village of Bethlehem in the Sanjak of Jerusalem in 1865. Three years later, he wrote the poem for his church, and his organist Lewis Redner (1831-1908) added the music.

Absolutely stunning and lovely, Primož. Your presentations of this amazing choir are always a beautiful experience, over and over for years. Thank you, once again.
Is Ernestina singing as an honored guest with the choir, or is she now a permanent member? Last I knew, she was living in Belgium, which is quite a journey to Ljubljana. 🙄
In wish for you, Vesna and Jakob a blessed and happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year, my friend. "Mele Kalikimaka" from chilly and rainy Hawai'i. 💖🙄🌧🌴🌈
Dear Conrad. She sang as part of recording session. Thank you for your comment. 2024 will be amazing production year. Full of beautiful music. I wish you Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
There is another tune, in addition to St Louis and Forest Green. It is by Walford Davies. I used to hear this often in my childhood in the 40’s and 50’s, but rarely now and I prefer to either of the other two.
Yes Tim, Harry's tune was used as an alternative to Forest Green occasionally at our school assemblies in the 1950s and 1960s. We never used St Louis and I think that St Louis is distinctly second rate and underwhelming. Forest Green was preferred by everyone at school who paid attention to these things and by popular demand was the only tune used at church. "The hopes and fears of all the year Are met in thee tonight", in my view, NEEDS Ralph's beautiful tune. I am biased because I regard Ralph as our greatest composer of the last 200 years, .... Oh! ..... and many years ago, when visiting nearby Leith Hill, I also visited Forest Green, I don't know now but at the time and in Ralph's experience, a quite lovely little place. Although "Summer Street" in E.M. Forster's "A Room with a View" is generally recognised as based upon the nearby Holmbury St. Mary, Forest Green brings the fictional almost idyllic (as E.M. Forster describes, Pretty cottages etc "only married by two ugly little villas") Summer Street to mind.
@@terryhoath1983 I was born in Dorking and schooled at Dorking Grammar, so that is all a well known area to me. As a small child, the large man standing next to me at the Leith Hill Musical Festival was pointed out as RVW, though at that age the name meant nothing to me. I agree about him being a great composer, though I feel Elgar is more or less equal, while very different.
@@timweather3847 What a coincidence ! You may not have understood at the time but you were touched by grace.
