- Shadow of Mordor released 10 years ago this year and Shadow of War 7 years ago. This video will review and provide a retrospective on these games by delving into the impact they had, their lore accuracy and how I can play and enjoy them considering the huge amount of inaccuracies in both games. Further this video discusses these games in contrast to other popular fantasy adaptations such as the lord of the rings movies by Peter Jackson, the Rings of Power, the Witcher series (on netflix) and the witcher games.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War is a 2017 action-adventure video game developed by Monolith Productions and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Shadow of War is the sequel to 2014's Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, both of which are based on J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium. The game is set in between the events of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings film trilogies, from which the game also takes inspiration. The player continues the story of Talion, the Gondorian Ranger who bonded with the wraith of the Elf Lord Celebrimbor, as they forge a new Ring of Power to amass an army to fight against Sauron. The game builds upon the "nemesis system" introduced in Shadow of Mordor, allowing Talion to gain followers from several races of Middle-earth and command them in warfare.
Shadow of War expanded on the scope of Shadow of Mordor by introducing new game mechanics and extending the nemesis system, which procedurally generates orc characters for players to fight and recruit. Compared to its predecessor, the game features more light-hearted moments, and the five regions were designed to be bigger and more colorful. Locations in the game were inspired by the landscapes of eastern Washington, Alaska, and Iceland. Troy Baker returned to provide the voice of Talion, while simultaneously serving as the game's motion capture director. Other cast members include Alastair Duncan as Celebrimbor, Laura Bailey, and Pollyanna McIntosh.
Announced in March 2017, the game was released worldwide for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One on October 10, 2017. Shadow of War had a generally favorable reception from critics, albeit more mixed than its predecessor. Reviewers praised the gameplay and improved nemesis system, while criticizing the game's microtransactions (which was removed in a post-game update in July 2018) and story, including changes to characters seen in Tolkien's books. Many critics noted that the game's increased scope caused it to feel bloated. The game was the best-selling video game in the United States in its month of release. Monolith supported the game post-launch with free updates and two story expansions.

The best thing about this video, is that as of an hour ago I'm revisiting these games because I never really played them. So far, so good
Enjoy them! They're a blast to go through, I really enjoyed just going around and seeing how many orcs I could take down at once!
You seem very knowledgeable on the Witcher franchise!!
Maybe consider making a channel dedicated on it
(Love your videos 😊😊)
That would be an idea :) thanks Gregory
One of the best games on PS4
The first time I played it was on my Xbox One. My brother on PS4. Really fun set of games there
Way better on PC, played it at native 4K at 120fps and above constantly.
Man the Nemesis System is so frickin cool, I have some very cool memories. Never finished Shadow of War though. I dont really know why? I guess the story did not really catch me or I was grossed out by collectibles. 😂 Maybe I should give it another try
I'd give it another try! It had issues but I found it to be a fun game overall. Flying the drakes and fighting a balrog was interesting for sure
I have played shadow of war and it was a really cool game, but there was a weird disconnect between the lore and the game. Just a little odd-ness, but a really cool game. I want to get back into it.
It's a strange little gem. I'm glad you enjoyed it !
Both games are epic!!! I love the nemesis system they actually created!!! Plus shadow of war and shadow of mordor don't have anything and aren't trying to have anything to do with proper lotr history
That's what I like about it. It's not adapting the story of lotr it's not claiming to be accurate, it's just having fun
I love your videos George. 💪 Im listening to LOTR atm. Also enjoyed the first game. I need to try the second game.
Greetings from Germany. 💙
Thanks Chridtoph! Enjoy your reading!
Did you maybe play or heard of the game Risen 1 ? Really would love a video about it. 😜
That could be a fun video!
I always thought the story was interesting enough even though obviously not very faithful to the source material. But I always mainly enjoyed these games for the gameplay and just sort of the immersion of being a really strong person in the world of lord of the rings. Even if that world is like not very accurate.
It's fun for what it is. A very inaccurate game with interesting mechanics and fun gameplay (at least for me)
Yes the lore is a travesty in these games but they are A LOT of fun! Actual gameplay fun! From beginning to the end. No travelling around and selling stuff you don't need. Just be aware that it is a fan fiction outside of the canon lore.
exactly, enjoy it for what it is!
The first one sure but the second one no they ruined Celebrimbor.
Do you mean when he turned on Talion?
I really like(d) Shadow of war even with all the fucked up lore. For me the biggest difference between SoW and the Witcher series is, SoW is still a great game while The Witcher is just overall awful.
The Witcher games are great but the series is definitely not my cup of tea. The casting (largely) and 'adaptation' of the source material left a lot to be desired.
No… they freaking aren’t. Shadow of Mordor was the most empty, repetitive, basic, and cheaply made garbage I bought the entire console generation. It’s horrid trash. Only LOTR fanboys could get any amount of enjoyment out of this piss poor joke of a game. WB should be ashamed
