Tarun, another superb, detailed review, sir. I am building my analog two-channel system from scratch, and appreciate your ideas on pairing of gear. Please keep up these great A-B comparisons. Your channel is appreciated by audiophiles of all stripes and levels!

Thank you Tarun for another informative review. As always, your comparisons and system matching comments make your reviews so very useful.
I believe you said in one of your first YT videos that reviews without comparisons were merely advertising. That is when I became a subscriber.

I've now watched a few reviews of yours, Tarun, and it's obviously time to subscribe. The reviews are just so pleasant to watch. Clear, no BS. Sure Josh Valour has fancier photography (still love his reviews too), but I really like the presentation here and full practical explanations. Cheers!

Great review as always! I have a node 2i, it still sounds good and I like that it’s not in my face visually and just does it’s thing - the functionality is great… I see the node x as a potential upgrade in the future. For me I don’t see the benefit of the fancy screens on other streamers, I use my phone to control the streamer sitting down enjoying the music so colour screens seem like an unnecessary add on. I’d rather that expense be reinvested in a better sounding streamer 👌 this is what I think Bluesound focuses on

I had a Node 2021 and really didn't like it at all. I thought it was bettered by the ifi Zen blue Bluetooth receiver and then much bettered by the Zen one signature. I thought the blusound had no life to the sound but I suppose for many this is the whole point of a good DAC: adding nothing not taking anything away from the sound of your system

You're are not only the best in terms of explaining sound quality, but also the most enlightening for understanding a products technical specs and best use cases for setting up similar gear. I need to get some usb cords because I assumed the transport use of a streamer would be the same regardless of digital output used and the high-end dac would always handle clocking. I mistakenly thought usb was mainly only for use with a computer source. Thank you for explaining syncronous transmission because I've been using the optical input on my tube dac from my iFi Neo Stream all these years and usb may be a better choice. Of course will be product dependent. I think my dac uses xmos chip for usb but don't know if that's good or bad but certainly worth trying.

Thank you David. Much appreciated. Some modern DACs do reclock optical and coax inputs but asynchronous is generally going to have lower jitter due to the handshake of information 😊👍

I've had the DMP-A6 for just over two weeks now. I agree with your assessment on resolution - it's very detailed. This resolution really separates the instruments. It is easy to hear individual vocalists in a group. I found the "apodizing" filter best for my system and agree that the different filters are subtle. I recommend waiting a good 30 seconds after switching filters to hear the difference, probably due to memory buffer. I am very happy with the sound of this DAC.
Features that sold me: The touchscreen is very nice. The display options are great. Built in Quobuz, Tidal and Amazon Music apps. I love the way streaming rates and technical info is displayed. The internal SSD was a big factor for me as well. The fact that I've gotten 2 firmware updates in as many weeks is promising. Eversolo seems to care about this product and is supporting it.

Thanks Tarun for a well balanced review.
I recently bought the Eversolo DMP-A6 and I just love it.
No headphone socket? If I want to listen through headphones, which I rarely do, too unnatural for me, then I just plug into the socket on my amp.
No HDMI ARC? Still, no real bother to me. I'm happy with this unit as is.
The ease with which I setup and started enjoying my music, via Tidal and external hard drive, simply amazed me.
The Eversolo app was quick to install and use on both my iPhone and my Lenovo android tablet.
Choosing my external hard drive source was seamless as was the choosing of albums and individual tracks.
I also had no difficulty using the WiFi with the A6.
This is my first hifi streamer component and I'm very satisfied with the A6.
For the price, and mostly positive reviews, the Eversolo, in my opinion (we always have to qualify our comments with this, right?), was the logical choice.

Another excellent review, Tarun! 😊Thank you for going into detail differentiating what many would find use case differences. Also partnering! That seems most left out when others cover streamer “shootouts”.
As per your question: sound signature/quality/scalability is most important to me. User friendliness second, but best be glitch free. Really leaning toward Volumio’s Rivo as dedicated streamer, and it can really jump up in sound quality with an upgrade lps 🙏🏼👍🏼

I have an earlier version of the Node and love controlling it from my iPad. I love the meters look and I don’t want to have to spend the money to get a Mac since I have excellent amps. So both have their benefits. The cost difference may be the final data point. Thanks.

I got a standard node about 5 months ago, the app is great but the dac is a fair bit less detailed than the one in my Audiolab 6000a so I recently treated myself to a Chord Mojo2 and I'm absolutely delighted with the setup, it sounds fantastic.
You mentioned the need for an adaptor for the optical input on the Node, but they do supply one with the unit.

Thanks for this comparison. I have the Node X and use it only for headphone listening. A friend of mine has the regular Node 2 and tested the headphone outputs on a pretty good headphone (Dan Clark, don’t know the exact model) and found the X was clearly better. The Eversolo with the touch screen really would benefit from a good headphone stage because then you’re close to the device anyway. In my main system I have a NAD M33 and hardly ever use the screen, it’s mainly ROON.

I purchased an Eversolo DMP A6, I do not use the internal DAC, instead, I connect it to my Hugo TT2/m-scaler via the USB, which sounds absolutely stunning! I have a Michi X3 and B&W 804 D4s for the front end.

    • @elthamlad468
      @elthamlad468 Před 6 měsíci +1

I am curious about the Michi X3, how would you rate it's internal DAC, which I believe is AKM 4499, same DAC used in the new DMP-A8? Some reviewers say it's equal to a £1500 DAC others a £400 DAC. Big difference!

    • @jamiermathlin
      @jamiermathlin Před 6 měsíci

@@elthamlad468 I use Chord DACs, currently the Hugo TT2 and M-Scaler combo, which is on a different level to the in-built DACs that we see in modern hi-end amplifiers, but to answer your question , to compare the AKM 4499 and the Sabre ESS 9038PRO, (I had a Topping D90LE) both at the top of their respective trees, I would say that the AKM4499 is more forward in the mid range, with some degree of warmth, lacking a little detail at the top end, whereas the ESS9038PRO is more detailed, but lacks the warmth, with a slightly wider sound stage. For £1500 I would suggest the Chord Qutest, it sits some where between these two DACs, but has a much wider sound stage, 2 to 3x the depth and it is more revealing. I hope this helps 😀. PS. the Michi is a Peach, it is so revealing, muscular and the depth is something to behold, it is for me, perfect !!

I've got the node 2i with an external LPS, feeding the digital signal to a Gustard R26 DAC, using Qobuz. The app is easy and works well. The sound is great. I keep the node and the DAC in my cabinet, hidden from sight and control it via an iPad on the couch. The only component I see is my Rogue Audio Chronus mag3 tube amp - no need for bright touch screens ruining the "feel" of the glowing tubes.

Loving the DMP-A6 with my Exposure 3510 pre/power and Mission 770 speakers. The brightness you describe was noted when I bought it but seems to have mellowed now... or perhaps ears have : ) ... I’ve had the A6 master edition with upgraded vinshine LPS inside, I absolutely love it, amazed at how much detail it reveals. The feature of actually getting full lossless from Apple music via the cast menu is what first sold me plus internal ssd slot & xlr out into my pre amp but the added VU meters & with the new graphic equaliser screen (released in the last update) is nice I like the layout on both the screen & app, the radio streaming services (esp radio paradise) all add to this powerhouse of a little unit, it is definitely the best bit of hifi I’ve bought for the money ( I’ve had Cyrus, naim 500 series )
Sound quality wise I agree at first the vocal was very forward but after 2 months it’s burned in & softer, you really pick out the bass which I love actually hear it’s a stringed instrument not that boom boom which I hate.
Music definitely sounds better from the internal ssd (if installed) than streaming but not that the streamed music sounds bad at all.
Anyone purchasing one won’t be disappointed, had several updates already so they are working hard on improving it all the time.
I wish they would release a streamer only version with i2s output (the A8 has this) so that you can save a bit of money to put towards a dac of your choice but otherwise a brilliant unit.

  • @WMalven
    @WMalven Před 6 měsíci +6

You failed to mention one very important feature of the Bluesound Node X that the DMP A6 lacks, bass control. The subwoofer output provides both a crossover for low end filtering and a high end crossover for the mains. If you have a subwoofer, the Node X is a very tempting choice.
I still haven't decided which would be better for my own system, but that eArc input is attractive and the bass control is very tempting ...on the other hand there is that damn 6" touch screen. I do like a good set of meters. LOL!!!

    Another quality comparison video, cheers.
I use the ES A-6 for streaming (transport only) using a curious USB cable. I get amazing results with my Michi P5/S5, ATC40 and SVS2000SB sub. I'd like to add that connecting to Tidal via airplay is inconsistent and below average performance. Always connect with 'tidal connect'. I agree with your assessment and also highly recommend.

A heartfelt thanks for your work you do here. Yours was the final review I watched regarding the Node X before finally ordering one. I definitely wanted something that physically disappeared from view, and based on your high marks regarding the Bluesound interface, (I use Android mainly, but now and again Macbook), that really allows it to happen. One word to the wise, I bought a re-certified unit from Safe And Sound "not sure about that, looks new to me", but out of the box it sounded completely lifeless and disappointing. I figured that it must need a thorough amount of burn-in time, but in the meantime I'll continue getting familiar with it's GUI. After a bit of time playing with various settings I decided to off the tone controls "bass and treble were both flat" and all-of-a-sudden the music snapped into focus and leapt out into the room. Certainly further reinforces my personal long held belief that tone controls just get in the way.

Thanks Tarun. It's amazing how my day brightens when another of your reviews appears. I used to have third gen Node with and external linear power supply then lost my mind and some money upgrading to an Aralyc Ares G1.1 streamer. The sound improved a lot but did it improve the difference from $800 worth to $3300? I cant say except when things improve and it's hard to go back and the Acrylic sounds outstanding with a Cardas USB cable to a Pontus II.One thing to note is the new Eversolo 8 comes in at a whopping $2000! Also the Ares G11 is due for an upgrade so Auralic is blowing them out for a thousand off at $2300. Wonder if Auralic is going to increase screen size in the upgrade. As it sits now, reading the menu on the screen is like reading the drug information on a bottle of pills, the stuff they dont really want you to read. I think streaming is one area of hifi that is going to keep rapidly improving and consequently costs for a good streamer will drop with competition. All good things.

Better with a more basic but big font display you can read from across the room like my Arcam has, I never have to leave the sofa nor need binoculars. I also mostly use it with the attached USB drive or Mac Server and the remote, no app needed for that. Nice streamer though you have, a league above this Eversolo.

Thank you very much for your clear presentation! I'm an audiophile and I love listening music in proper way. Linn is the heart of main system, built to listen music and upgraded to home theatre. Two pairs of AV5140 three amp active, one AV5120 three amp active and one Melodik subwoofer. Pre Akurate 5.1 with Dynamik power and three power amplifiers, 5ch each, Linn 5125 all with Dynamik technology. CD player Unidisk 1.1 and turntable Project RPM 9 with Benz Micro Wood head and Benz Micro PP. I'm very happy about my system, I love the way it sounds! Only recently I add a streamer, Node X, in order to play Tidal and Qobuz in high resolution. The Node X DAC performs TOO low compared with Linn Akurate so I connected with digital coaxial exit letting work the Akurate's DAC. I'm quite happy with the sound performance very close or even better (with Hi Res files) than Unidisk 1.1 and with the BluOs app. Anyway, I've been told that for a system like mine the Node X has too low performance and that I should definitely go for a Linn streamer. The problem is that a Linn streamer has a cost of minimum 4-5.000 £. I would like to ask your advice if it makes sense to spend such amount of money if I have simply to use the streamer to bring digital signal to my Akurate pre. Or maybe do you think that internal DAC of a new Linn streamer is much better than my "old" Akurate? Just to let you know even Unidisk 1.1 internal DAC is much less performing than the Akurate/Dynamik one and I use it through the digital coaxial connection to the Akurate/Dynamik... Your advise would be very appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for a fantastic review. A few months ago I also bought these two units,I ended up keeping the NodeX and selling the DMP A6. Imo the Node app is by far the best in the market, and I thought the DMP A6 sounded more digital and a bit to bright, but The DMP had abit more detail. I then decided to try linear power supplies (actually 3 different PSUs) I ended up with the top of the line from Fidelity Audio. This is not at all acheap product (1100 GBP) including the interface. The sound coming from the node x is now of absolutely INSANE quality. I also put emi/rfi treatment on all of the chips and opa inside the node. I CANT RECOMMEND THIS UPGRADE ENOUGH.

Great comparison review Tarun. I went from a Node N130 to a DMP-A6 and back to a Node 2i with LPSU. Despite all the rave Eversolo reviews, I just could not tolerate the lack of queue management on the A6 and the fatiguing sound. It was mightily impressive for about half an hour and then just got on my nerves. I’m so pleased to be back with a Node, which I can listen to all evening via my Roksan Caspian M2 and Neat Motive SX2 speakers.
Keep the great reviews coming. Thanks.

Thanks Tarun, another very good review, keep it up. I listened to the DMP A6 standard and I liked it, but in the end I bought the Master Edition and I'm very happy. I had a Gustard X26 Pro DAC that I sold because I was thinking of an upgrade, but after I got the A6 Master I gave it up because the internal DAC is very good. Maybe something in the area of over 4000 euros will make a clear difference. But until I will have this money, there is more.
Qobuz is not available in my country, I tested Tidal (I didn't like MQA at all), but Apple Music convinced me, it seems to me that the sound is better than Tidal and on the DMP A6 it can be listened to in HiRes, so Eversolo offered me the best option . Have you tried Apple Music?

Maybe I missed this (if I did forgive me for the redundance) I have a 5.1 system with an Emotiva XPA amp driving LCR and my AV reciever deriving the surrounds. Will the eversolo output sound when I look at mives to all channels?

I learn so much from his reviews. I appreciate learning that the dac is good up to the $1000 speaker before it gets to be the limiter. My speakers are $3500 bookshelf speakers so i probably should look to go between the ares2 and the venus 2 to get the most out of my speakers.
I would like to get some info about the digital preamp section on the node and dmp product. Do you need a proper preamp in-between these and an amp or does it sound fine without one when you go directly into the power amp???

Thanks, Tarun, for another informative and detailed review. I have a more expensive version of EverSolo DMP-A6: the Master Edition. This one have better clocks (Femtosecond) and better OP-AMPs. I'm partering it with Yamaha AS2100 and Focal Aria 948. In spite of every one of these devices sounding a little brighter (or so the internet says), the sound is not unmusical or analitical to my ears. Parhaps it is worth reviewing the Master Edition in the near future. Or the new Eversolo DMP-A8, which has a R2R volume control for pre-amp, better DAC chips and the conectivity DMP-A6 lacks.

Thank you Tarun. A balanced review as ever. I have the previous Node n130. Hooked up via an external LPS (Fidelity Audio). That upgrade seems to have opened it up and improved the Bass. I do use it's much maligned ( it seems) internal DAC at the moment. For me. It still sounds pretty good via a Rega Amp and Ophidian speakers.
Personally, I am sure the Eversolo has a good sound. But I much prefer to pay for the electronics for the sound, and have no desire to have the screen inputs it provides. The Bluos app is fine and does what I need on my phone.
I have thought about using the Optical, or new USB output to feed an external DAC though on my n130. Perhaps a Mojo 2 or a Schiit Bifrost (?). I think in my standard of system. That may give a bit of uplift. As to if it's as much as the LPS made. Hard to say. Be interested if anyone else has experience of both upgrades?
Anyhow. You are the best pretty much reviewer I have found. So thank you Sir

Hi Tarun, thanks for another well grounded review. For me the best connectivity to a good external DAC would probably be the most useful consideration 😎👍 We currently use a bluesound node 2i Vault. Love the app but connectivity to a good DAC is very limited. Also you can get the eversolo master edition and an upgraded linear power supply. We haven’t been unhappy with the Vault but will move towards a much better quality streamer.

Just switched from the Bluesound Node N130 to the Eversolo A6 Master Edition. I was sick of a few persistent bugs with the Bluesound app, and the Eversolo app works better for me, and the A6 offers that nice UI on screen, too. It sounds way better than my Bluesound ever did, albeit it wasn't the X, of course. The master edition has better op amps and femtosecond oscillators and sounds a bit less bright or fatiguing than the regular A6 can do with some partnering equipment I heard. Never had a chance to compare, though, but it's a nice streamer no doubt.

    Good video, thank you.
I've had the Bluesound Node (previous model to the Node X) for over a year now and initially, I was put off by the somewhat metallic sound noticeable on treble notes, particularly from a piano.
I added the Topping E70 Velvet DAC and the sound, the sound stage, and instrument separation all were increased for the better. Since that dramatic change, I can only wait for any improvement in future DACs and perhaps a linear power supply to further upgrade the sound quality. Which external power supply would you recommend?

  • @tablameister

Thanks for this very useful comparison. Eversolo has announced the A8, which includes eARC (but no headphone jack), an improved internal clock, and uses AKM rather than ESS chips. The price is significantly higher than the A6. To me, the 4TB SSD capability makes it worth the money.

So I preemptively bought the iFi Zen Stream at about one-third the cost. It has Airplay1 (I believe) and a USB out. The Eversolo is flying off the shelves here. Cool look helps I'm sure. As to your question-what features in a streamer? #1 - no DAC. #2 is deboxing-i.e mine rips, streams, stores. #3 Got to have Roon. Please take note of the part where Tarun suggests how to transport audio from the streamer to DAC, at 13:56. Following his advice, I started using a USB asynchronous connection, which means that the external DAC handles the audio clock instead of the streamer. This is different from SPDIF and optical cable connections where the audio clock is done on the streamer. I noticed a significant difference in audio quality in favor of the USB connection. For reference, I use a BlueSound Node 130 and Ladder Schumann R2R DAC. I hope this information is useful to you as well! 🙂

Hi, and thank you for the video... I have an odd question, FIP, which is an excellent radio praised by worldwide audiophiles for its eclecticism and sound quality, was on Tune-In, but the Radio France group which it belongs to didn't renew the contract with Tune-In this year and a lot of people listening to it on Tune-In till they remove it don't know where to turn now for having it natively streaming vs bluetoothing it from phone or computer. But this radio station (and the others belonging to the group) can be found as an app. though, be it on Android or Apple Store. If you see me coming, you will have guessed my question, which is Is there any streamer which allows today to stream directly or semi directly from one of these apps which would have some kind of Android or Apple integration to allow for that ? I think I saw some using Alexa or Apple Play but not too sure of the method... Any insight on the subject would be really welcome if you have the time... Thank you.

Bluesound still have not got BBCSounds connectivity, you have to use TuneIn. However, TuneIn does not work with BBC 5Live Sports Extra, which means you cannot stream the cricket commentary. You instead have to use Bluetooth or airplay and stream it directly from the bbc sounds app on your phone/iPad.

I worry that I will simply be getting a fancier looking unit & a different interface as I won’t be utilising the DAC. I’m not interested in the touchscreen facility, ‘Audio Quality’ only.
In ‘your’ experience, can I improve on the Audio quality (MQA unwrapping aside) by upgrading my streamer when I am still going to be using an external DAC?
If so then I don’t mind spending ‘considerably’ more, but only if I am getting better audio!

Even though it can't match the Node's app or the Eversolo's touch screen, I think it strikes a nice balance between both. I remember comparing the older Node model last year and at least in terms of sound quality, the Cambridge was a clear step up, so im curious how it compares against the Eversolo in that regard.
