I posted this comparison because I couldn't find it anywhere online. Check out Optica Exotica and Backfire CZcams Channels for some great information on binoculars.
Absolutely perfect review and exactly what I was looking for.. I also watched the comparison video that used the crossfire instead of the diamondbacks and was disappointed. I’m a deer hunter who needs something that gives me a good low light capability. Was really hoping the Vortex was the winner, but unless one is on sale, I will be buying the leupold
I've also been informed that the Leupold has better fog resistance. Given that and the lowlight performance, for those that need it I whole heartedly have to recommend the leupolds.
Thx for review. After trying several pairs in the store, I decided that ease of focus was really important to me. As you said the Vortex Diamondback is very easy to get focused compared to other brands.
I am just taking a shot in the dark but I think your going to chose the Leupolds that way you don’t have to shoot in the dark! No comparison! Leupolds for the win
Nice review! I think eye relief and fov can be mentioned but again people can read all of this. I like that you pointed out the colour pallet of each bino and a focus ring. Some don't realise how it important a good focuser is until the struggle to get accurate focus quickly. I returned many binoculars because of play and lack of that snap in focus .
Vortex. I recommend for daylight: 15x56 Diamondback Binos 8x36 Solo rt monocular. Great combo optics..monocular for spotting, Binos for close detail. Price for both: €575-£479-$651 approx.
thanks, sounds like vortex warranty is great, but, it sounds like in cold weather leupold wins, and low light also wins, most game animals move at last hour of light and first hour of light, but it is tough choice. think I'm leaning towards leupold. thank you
that lens flare is a big deal...I have swarovski 10x25's for daily use (best $1k I EVER spent) and swaro 10x30's for field (outside of my spotter which is another discussion) but lens flare is an issue for me. Leupold is a combat optics company and that would be an issue as well in a combat situation. Lens flare is something that annoys me in both my eyewear/optics and Leupold eyewear/optics has none. Other than that, your review is unbiased and spot on.. it's really fit and finish prob better on the Vortex.
You talked about smoothness of the focus ring a lot and I agree with you that this is very important to how easy it is to use a pair of binoculars. How about quickness of focus? I've had binoculars where it's smooth enough, but I feel like I have to turn the focus ring an awfully long way to get from close focus to, say, a focus about 75' away, whereas other binoculars had a much shorter travel distance and time on the focus ring to accomplish the same thing. This made a big difference in my enjoyment of the binoculars.
Ah so you're talking about the distance from minimum focus to infinity. I think they were virtually the same but I'll see if I can find some info online.
I just compared both in the store & both are really sharp and clear, I felt the luepold took a little more to fine tune them to my eyes and I dont know if it was more 3d but the luepold seemed more like there was more dimension on the focus object. And the diamondback just kinda seemed flatter but it seemed like the colors were little brighter but I ended up going with the bx-2.
The main advantage of HD is the chromatic aberration is greatly reduced, as well as sharpness. I’m sure both pair are great, but this comparison was not quite Apples to Apples.
Ya you need to compare the HD Leupold to the HD Vortex otherwise you are not giving a fair comparison! In my short 60 years of hunting and owning about 50 pair of bino’s the Leupold is by far the better bino for light gathering clarity and quality! To each his own but why short change your self when buying a product! Leupold is a much better product for the price! Oh ya they are made in Oregon 🤔😳
I appreciate all the comments, but just realize the HD version of the leupolds did not come out until shortly after I made this video. Which I simply did because there wasn't one.
I checked the crossfire hd and diamondback hd...the diamondbacks are far better in clarity. The construction also seemed better on the diamondbacks hd...I bought the diamondbacks, which were on sale for under 200
Thanks for the review. I recently bought a pair of the Leupold BX-1 McKenzie HD 12x50 and do not care for the binocular harness. This is an important feature when carrying a binocular in the field all day and the need to quickly access the binoculars. You mentioned you liked the Leupold strap. Can you prepare a video on the comparisons of the various harnesses that are available and your favorite?
@@themanfromoregon6047 it's pretty crazy how ripped off we get over here, you can routinely get stuff imported from the US for 2/3 the price, sometimes even 1/2 price.
Bud I thought your review in general was great but the chromatic abboration was definitely switched, think you got the pair you were holding wrong there. Otherwise perfect review on all points. Also HD in bino terms really mean very little there is no industry standard to measure density of glass, I have seen binos with 0 HD claims on them outperforming supposed HD at exactly the same price point.
Had both pair at the same time. I really wanted to like the leupolds but it felt like they were sucking my eyeballs out of my head. I also did a contrast test between the two and the Vortex won so I keep the vortex
I use 12's most of the time. A little trick, if you wear a baseball-type cap pinch the brim between your fingers and the binoculars. Makes it much more solid.
Not a fair comparison as the newer BX-2 HD are quite a bit step up from the standard BX-2. Both are good but if you would of compared the BX-2 HD then there would of been a clear winner even though I'm a Vortex guy living in WI.
Sometimes you will get a bad pair unfortunately and I'm pretty positive that's what happened here I did almost guarantee if you were to get another pair of the same local binoculars and look through them side by side with the Diamondbacks they would be better little pool uses Superior glass
I've only both Vortex and Leupold binoculars and I currently have both still I prefer a Leupold. In fact I've been trying to sell my voice text binoculars
I wonder if the new alpine hd would be sharper than the older model that you used for the comparison? Or if the new alpines have an improved focus wheel?
I talked to Leupold and checked out an hd pair recently at a local sporting goods store and quite honestly the optical design is exactly the same. The focus wheel feels the same and even though Leupold says that the new HD coatings will cause even greater lowlight performance, I'm betting the most noticeable difference is going to be purple and green color fringing.
Leupold bx-2 HD vs Vortex diamondback HD, could you tell me if now with leupold New lens HD the diference is enought to choose one better than the other? Sorry for my poor english, greetings from Spain. Thx a lot if you can help me!
Anyone know if there is a difference between the Original BX-2 Alpine and the BX-2 Alpine HD? I had the original and I didn’t like the amount of chromatic aberration I was seeing on edges of everything including water. The Leupolds definitely have a more “real” depth and the color favors toward a yellow but the CO was a deal breaker and I returned them.
I'm fairly certain that the alpine hd coating is supposed to help the the CA but I haven't tested them to be sure. I would say that the vortex also has some CA but it was more noticeable in the alpines.
I just sold my pair or Vortex Diamondback and the only reason is that where I hunt in the colder Canadian climate they are NOT for proof and after 30 seconds on your eyes they fog up that said Leupold's Alpines are supposed to be fog proof 🤔
I tried them in a camera shop in Mpls, Mn & found the M5 ( 8 x42 ) a bit better then the Diamond backs They Had a window to look out a long way at large building lettering & an Eye Dr. office sign in the building to do comparisons . The Nikon Monarch eye relief turned out more on the M5's which helped me a lot ! I need to Ck. out the Leupolds BK 2 before I Decide .
You're right. That's something I should have covered but they have two of the comparatively best guarantees on the market. I'm quite confident regardless of which brand you chose you could get a replacement for virtually any reason
Basically depending on what angle sunlight was hitting the front element of the binoculars I would see a a loss of Contrast and a tad bit of "reflection" from the excess light. This was far from horrible but when compared to the alpines you could see the difference.
My leupold cascades are better then my vortex diamondback hd. Clarity and focus are better to me. Also my cascades don't jitter as much as the vortex. Also like them better then the vipers which I'm really not a fan of.
Great review and comparison. My own glass snobbish eyes require at least $425 (when on sale or $499 regular price) Athlon Cronus binoculars. Just take home lunch to work for up to a month to save up for the difference. If I were forced to buy Vortex it would at least be a Razor. The minimum Leupold binoculars for me would be the BX5 Santiam for around $650-ish when shopping smart. If I were on a really tight budget I'd buy 10 of the best customer rated Amazon binoculars all under $100 each and return 8 or 9 of them after comparing them all side by side instead of spending $250 on either of these Vortex Diamondback HD or Leupold BX2 binoculars since I'm positive one or two of the 10 from Amazon are going to be clearer and have a wider FOV than either of these and once I find the best ones I'd buy a spare or 2 that's the lifetime warranty right there. A buddy bought a bunch of sub $50 Amazon binoculars and kept the best and returned the rest then bought extras for spares and gifts. He insist Vortex charges at least 5x the amount they should for their Chinese made optics. I haven't seen what exactly he compared the sub $50 Amazon binoculars with (NAME BRAND). I think sub $100 from Amazon is a better range to choose from.
All valid points. Best pair of sub $50 binoculars I've ever bought were the Leupold Yosemites. They don't produce them anymore and the prices in the aftermarket have risen but my goodness they are stunning imo.

Great review! Both are great binocs! I went with the 12x52 alpine HD’s and I LOVE them.
Those are the ones I am very interested in for birding for raptors.
Thx for review. After trying several pairs in the store, I decided that ease of focus was really important to me. As you said the Vortex Diamondback is very easy to get focused compared to other brands.
Good review. I just received the Leupolds. Looking forward to trying them out. First set of nice, to me, binoculars.
Such a great comparison thank you. For me I'll be getting the leupolds, for low light. You can't shoot what you can't see.
You can always shoot at noises ; )
I am just taking a shot in the dark but I think your going to chose the Leupolds that way you don’t have to shoot in the dark! No comparison! Leupolds for the win

Good point about the fov and the eye relief. I figured I would forget something as the review was off the cuff and not something I normally do.
Thanks for this comparison. They're both on sale right now for Black Friday but there aren't any good comparisons.
Vortex.
I recommend for daylight:

I bought the BX-4 pro guides. Great binoculars (10x42) for hunting in open country.
Pro guides are definitely a great option at the next price point up.
Thanks for all the great information. I really enjoyed watching it and learned a ton!
Thanks for watching :)

I thought the same thing when I watched them compare the crossfires to the Alpines! Great review, maybe you should do more???
Long term probably, but as a full time accounting student I'm pretty busy at the moment. Thanks for commenting.

My son you have chosen wisely!
Leupold are far superior in my opinion.
Just got the Leupold 12x 52x

Yeah but they're priced the same so it's a comparison of what you get for the money.
I think the BX1 would be more of a the direct competitor to the Diamondback HD based on price.
Nope this is the perfect comparison, they both come in at almost identical prices.
I appreciate all the comments, but just realize the HD version of the leupolds did not come out until shortly after I made this video. Which I simply did because there wasn't one.
Love it! Thanks for the info!
for 250 i just got some endeavor II's- amazing optical performance 8x32 in a small and light weight package

could it be possible that you bought a used pair that someone ditched because of a manufacturing flaw?
Great review although I was disappointed we didn't get an "alright alright" at the end cause you sound exactly like Matthew McConaughey😅
The BX-2 Alpine is one and a half times the price as the Vortex Diamondback ($600 vs $400) here in NZ, the BX-1 McKenzie is the more direct comparison
Wow that's a surprising difference in price! I didn't realize how different the market was geographically.

Not a fair comparison as the newer BX-2 HD are quite a bit step up from the standard BX-2. Both are good but if you would of compared the BX-2 HD then there would of been a clear winner even though I'm a Vortex guy living in WI.
