This is a great video and resource for auto detailers who might want to add this service to their menu. Wiper scratches in the windshield and other light damage would probably be easily treated with your method and products. However, glass is much harder than paint and cerium oxide is a very aggressive abrasive. Either mask the paint or wash the car when you're finished. The technician wiped off the surrounding sling on the paint with a dry towel. He just installed a bunch of micro scratches and swirls to the paint on the door frame and adjacent roof area.
    Other than that, cool video.

The most important thing mentioned in this video is the use of a respirator. DO NOT use a dust mask. The respirator with P100 filtering is necessary to prevent glass dust from getting in your lungs, causing them to fill with fluid, killing you. If you manage to just get a little in your lungs, you'll likely get silicosis and that will take longer, but the end result is still a miserable death.

If the car window has a slight tint from the factory is this method safe to use. I have no idea how the original tint is applied, if its throughout the layers, on the inside or on the outside of the glass. Was worried , if it was on the outside then it could be removed when sanding and on the front windscreen would need to sand the whole panel including the edges to be uniform.

    • @bobsmithinson2050
      @bobsmithinson2050 Před 2 lety +2

No. Those tints are a thin treated coating on the inside of the glass. Any polishing will lessen the thickness of it in some spots, giving a blotchy and uneven tint with some spots being darker than others.

I think that most people just have light scratches on their windows and could go straight to polishing, I would never use sand paper on my window unless i had super deep scratches

  •  Před 3 lety +1

That doesn't remove too much material? All that glass dusting off makes me a little leery but the final result looks bangin'!
The car I just bought has micro scratches all over the glass. The idiot that detailed it before my purchase said he used steelwool because there was grime on the windows now I have scratchs and swirls that are easily visible.
Would I have to do all of this or could I just donthe cerium polish stage to get the glass back to OEM clarity?

Glassblower here: The polishing stage won’t, but be very precise on your 180 grit phase. Go in stages to make sure you’re hitting the right spots and not going overboard. Also, smoothing out the area with 180 grit.

@@TheRealBobMarley do I have to use a rotary or would a 20mm throw DA provide enough cutting power?

@ If you have a hand held dremel, for smaller scratches or more precise polishing without doing your whole window like the video shows, simply buy a Mini Tech-10 polishing pad .75"
      Mini diamond smoothing disc .75" / 600#
      Mini disc holder .75”
      Cerium oxide powder
I buy them online at HiTechDiamond whole setup probably less than $20. I use this for glassblowing and polishing glass to a diamond ring grade quality.

@@TheRealBobMarley I think something got lost in translation lol
I need to do the entire window. I know a standard rotary buffer has been recommended for doing glass but I have a DA polisher with a 20mm throw (which is apparently very aggressive when it comes to DA polishers and cuts just as strong as a rotary)
