    Bruce lee said " Be like water " , evolved from one art , embrace everything , and takes whats works for you. Ive been a martial arts practitioner for over 38 years , and still evolving . Now at 58 , bad knees , bad ankles , I can only kick waist down enough to inflict damage , I am a dirty fighter , the sooner I end the treath the better .

Bottom line is I am hard to please. That being said- great video. Good insight...... and I’m going to play with this with my students this week. Good energy. Clear instruction and charisma. richcapo 76 Hmmm are you suggesting that Jason maims someone to prove his point to you? Doubtful. I think that you suggest that the process being demonstrated and discussed is flawed. It’s not and is how every system, properly taught ie: incrementally processed for optimal success rates, has always been presented. Proof. Not only commandos in ww2 learnt this way but footage was shown of prisoners practicing techniques to stab other prisoners not unlike formal MA training. So how much more real would you like and please don’t go for mma which is a sport. Useful yes, but they train for different reasons similar to boxers. It’s all good imo

    • @zman4116
      @zman4116 Před 5 lety +1

      richcapo 76 ok, First I didn’t think that you had seriously suggested maiming etc (hence the ‘dubious’ being added), second as you likely know there is training for a surprise event and for sport, but there can be cross over. While I’m at this, I don’t hate mma, all martial art training has its place imo
      Anyway, what I see Jason doing is to apply intention and intensity. These provide a certain amount of reality or at least the potential to get as close to providing some real tension in your training partner.
      There are a lot of ways to effectively train WC and I happen to think that Jason is a pragmatic resource with some real information thrown in.
      Cheers

    I have trained in various martial forms, when I was younger, for self defense and found all of them have there pros and cons but what happens in a real situation? I panic, freeze, run why? because while the forms I did, in theory are sound, I lacked real training, real solid contact training. Some people offer one and not the other I feel you need both. watching and listening to the people at Greenville make me wish I had somewhere like that to learn and train when I was younger.

    Hi sifu Jason, just checking this vid from my home feed, (hope yor fam and students are all well btw.) The first demo of wing chun I experienced was my defence of a hook or roundhouse punch. I used a bong sau type arm up, like a Roman soldier holding up a shield, my future teacher showed me it can be DESTROYED by strength. That was a surprise, but then he showed me how to defend a hook with tan sau, beggars hand as he called it, and it was not only a block but a strike depending on your footwork. I don't think I'm teaching granny to suck eggs but this was literally the technique that MADE me train under my friend as I couldn't believe the strength of this posture (hand palm up, elbow in) against both power AND speed. It was a light bulb moment for me and further down the road practiced blocking the incoming bicep whilst striking with the other hand, a priceless and instant way to deter an attacker before he's touched you!
    Thanks, as always for this vid, it's nice to see someone who concentrates on the martial side rather than the art! Stay safe and well. X

    Thanks for starting this topic ♡ It is a delicate line between training close to realism and not seriously damaging the other person. As yes pressure testing is important but too close to realism can cause injuries. Incurring injuries due to training sessions seems counterproductive. We as in Wing Chun, don't need to subject ourselves (just for example) to all types of cold viruses to prove that we are immune to them all, but taking reasonable precautions to lower the threat to them is, such as regular flu shots and maintaining a healthly lifestyle. Wing Chun drills are intended to train the users "nervous system" to external physical threats, where drills strengthens the users "reaction immune system" to recognize and attack the threat instinctively.
    This is where Wing Chun fails for many due to learning it, rather than becoming it, as making it a part of one's own way of thinking, moving and reacting. As it isn't enough to know something, as it takes time to develop the Wing Chun skillsets, where drills strengthens these aspects. Having a deep appreciation for understanding energy concepts and lines of attacks and defence are helpful towards this purpose. If Wing Chun fighting concepts are based on scientific evidence and proven effective, then to believe in them isn't necessarily an issue but each user needs to become responsible for their effectiveness. Training diligently and intelligently is a good strategy to make it possible♡ @Grenville Academy you getting it the best way possible ♡

    Good analysis, examples, and tips, practical. I agree that in wing chun we need to practice more drills against higher boxing style punches instead of primarily wing chun style punches.
    I noticed it when taking krav maga classes, the punches start higher and angle from the shoulders, a little tougher to see and it helps to have some angles and slipping/dodges or more forearm deflections as you diagonal step to counter attack.
    Plus the boxing style punches have more reach/range, and lots of power. I found out in some open spar events that a more square wing chun stance got me kicked more, but an angled JKD or chum kiu stance works better.
    Training against multiple punch styles will improve the reflexes and skills for whatever life ‘throws’ at you...

      Matthias633 very well said - and I completely agree! Thanks for commenting.

    • @mokyan7
      @mokyan7 Před 5 lety +1

      richcapo 76 Those are good insights. I meant exposing yourself to different styles adds skills. Actually I use a blend of wing chun and krav maga, they work well together and every now and then I try things and my understanding increases.
      The 360* defense drill used in krav maga is great for reactions training. I bounce ideas off the instructor and my sifu and keep trying more things as I grow.
      I wouldn’t say I had to fundamentally change pak sao or variations, because a lot just happens automatically. It helps to “see” a variety of strikes in training, though.
      For example you can slip a higher punch easier and hit the body as you dodge, or make a bridge connection and pull, push, or twist depending on where you both are.
      However, not practicing against boxing punches and hooks is a problem as you want to be ready for any attacks that come, and typically in wing chun class we don’t practice them enough.
      Funny also that several features of krav maga are taken from wing chun and other styles. I may be going back to krav classes in the future to keep building my skills, after an injury heals more.
      I use more knees and elbows after taking krav classes. They work!
      I would definitely say that krav maga training improved my mindset and tenacity, to not just trade strikes but overwhelm the attacker and bring them down. In real life that is what must be done, stop the threat and not just make them angry. Legally the requisite force to stop the threat, then stop.

There’s a British boxing manual that demonstrates a lead check to the bicep of the opponent, WC people would call it a gumsao.
      You may already do this, but if not, put boxing gloves on and try out your WC with a cooperative and non-cooperative opponent, a lot can be learnt very quickly. And if you already do this, then you’re ahead of a lot of WC practitioners. Cheers

      To be very fair, the WC stance requires a lot of practice and testing for it to be grasped properly. Boxer stances are more fluid and faster to learn than WC mechanics. The fair part is it takes no time at all to demonstrate how strong the WC stance is, but utilizing it is very hard IMO.

    Can this be learned at home without partner?

      Anupam Parihar some of Wing Chun can be trained solo - like footwork, the forms and striking. Partner drills, though, require - you guessed it - a partner. One option is to get a friend who’s interested and start training them off the videos. That can work insofar as you both take it slow and are trying to learn, not compete with each other.
      Hope this helped and thanks for watching.

    You may be well-meaning but you're leading people down a wrong path. WC was designed to deal with CLF a specific style of kung fu and it is not equipped to deal with the modern understanding of a full-featured mixed martial art. Thanks for posting but you should stop calling it 'self-defense', because it is not. Call it 'traditional martial arts'. Let people know the limitations and let them decide for themselves.

    Kudos for the video content! Apologies for chiming in, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you tried - Chireetler Dread Free Rule (google it)? It is a great one off product for learning effective self defence moves without the normal expense. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my friend Sam at last got amazing results with it.

      @@richcapo Well the problem with wing chun around the world is the lack of full understanding about wing chum training method ; Anybody knows tan sau, fook sau and bong sau. Anybody knows siu lin tau. But the form is only the form. How to apply the elements of the form is the problem. If the train method is too much theoric, its easy to notice.
      Wing chun is very effective but few masters knows the hows and when of the art. Few masters test theyselves to discover the truth about fighting. In resume, wing chun is easy to learn but hard to apply and a lot of people just discuss...but dont have fight experience

      @@richcapo its efective if you have understanding how to train it. Take a western boxing as example; in boxing we have some tips of punching, steps, fakes and guards. Ok? But as the same thing, what make difference between Tyson and Hollifield? Basically the method of training of each other, because the " art" is the same, you see?
      Wing Chun can be effective or not, depend how you train and depend of training method. This wing chun of this video, doesn't work because not by is not wing chun, but doesnt work by the method of training.
