- This is part 2 of "The REAL Difference Between A Grandmaster and a 2000 In Chess" - In this video me and my mom GM Pia Cramling played out the exact same position to show people the difference between how a GM and a 2000 thinks in chess. The position was from a Magnus Carlsen game. We did this a few months ago and I wanted to do it again as many of you enjoyed it :)

It's actually "Magnus's". With names you do the 's. Learned that over at Ross's Game Dungeon.

The rule here is with names you always do the 's, with things you do s' if they end with 's'.

Anna please this type of content is absolutely perfect... analysing positions is a crucial element of chess for all levels of rating and this different perspectives are so instructive.

And the fact that you translate your mothers moves to a level where mortals can understand it is crucial for this video because Pia is obviously so far above everyone else here that her explaining her moves is like her trying to explain why you can't drink ice even though it's water to a toddler.

That’s what we love about her. So joyous in her love of chess.
Several big differences I notice with Pia:
* At the beginning she spent much more time evaluating the position.
* Once she had had thoroughly evaluated things from a positional perspective, she proceeded to calculate a large number of concrete lines. This let her blitz out a lot of follow-up moves.
* She plays the endgame effortlessly. Therefore she looked to take it to a slightly winning endgame as quickly as possible.
Also, the positions she got into were never too complicated. Anna tried to force things tactically and got into positions where it's very easy to miss something.
The biggest thing to me was the whole nature of her evaluation. It was like taking a step back to see the larger picture. And it just seemed to effortless and intuitive for her. It just shows that she literally doesn't even see the board in the same way as most people.
I'm super curious how Magnus Carlsen sees a board but it's probably so far past the scope of mere mortals that it can't even be explained. And that's not really hyperbole. He can literally play 10 people at once while blindfolded. Intelligence and chess knowledge aside just his working memory alone is off the charts.
Wow, it was impressive how fast Pia managed to force the engine to concede pieces. Such a class in positional chess.
Anna went into a complex tactical line which computers will always calculate better than humans. Pia went for a simplified endgame that reduced the possibilities and meant she could match the calculation powrler of the engine (on its setting).
More accurately, Anna had a half baked plan while Pia had a pretty accurate long term deep strategy to retain the advantage. The positional understanding between them two is night and day.

Pia really demonstrating her positional awareness here, I doubt Dad would have played it like this lol, we may have seen a more attacking game from him, similar to Anna's game. Great video!

This is just phenomenal content! I loved getting this glimpse into these great minds. The only thing additional that I would have loved to see was Pia analysing Anna's moves from earlier and see how well she predicted the computer's defensive lines which Anna missed.

I've been watching chess vids non-stop since the beginning of the pandemic and this was the best rating comparison I've seen - I thought your path followed the safest logic, your mom found the safest winning path, and Magnus used a narrow winning position to slam dunk on his opponent.
Such a good video breakdown! This solidifies my chess aspirations: I want to study and learn enough to get nearly as good as Anna, but I don't think I could ever become as good as either of her parents no matter how much practice and studying I do.
I also love how much joy you both found in the moves of this game. You adored your mom's analysis, finding it beautiful. Then your mom found Magnus' approach so elegant and beautiful it brought a huge smile to her face. It's amazing that such a simple game can provide such endless nuance and joy!
Pia always sounds so calm. That level of calm is not even in the same universe as me. If I could ever be that calm about chess, I'd probably be around 1500 now, rather than my peak of 1250 that I have right now.
My advice is practice tactics and watch attacking chess masters, that could raise you to 1500 maybe.
Ok I have to pause this. I remember about 15 years ago, father's day, Pia was playing on gamecolony sitting there a stout 3000 destroying everyone in the lobby. And she was the kindest, warmest, most wonderful lady to me. So nice to see this video! Godbless her and her family! Happy Thanksgiving!

The main difference I noticed, which was revealed when Pia said "I Can't Resist!" was that PIa instinctively distrusts attacking moves when she can't see the mate, whereas I think Anna wanted to heap on pressure as much as possible, and didn't have that distrust of the move. It wasn't that Pia calculated the engine's refutation, it was that she was comfortable assuming that there was counter-play and wanted to play safer moves that made sense positionally.
This is so wholesome. Warms my heart that there are such good people in the world.

I find this really helpful. So many times when you watch these types of videos, they start rattling off squares like we are also grand masters. My brain just doesn't move that quickly. She is teaching concepts. Perfect.

As someone between Anna's and Pia's playing strength this was actually super fascinating to watch. In the initial position my thoughts also immediately went towards Rb1 and Qb4. In general, my thought process matched Pia's much closer, though it may have more to do with stylistic differences. I think Pia's calculation was much cleaner than I would have calculated and she was super fast at evaluating a lot of things I would have struggled more with. Also her accuracy when they went through Magnus and Grishuk's actual moves was really impressive.
I also wonder if part of the difference is just the environment of the players. Similar to Pia, most of my chess development has been in more of an over the board classical time control environment, whereas Anna seems to have a lot more of the internet speed chess "education" (quotes because I can't come up with a better term, not meant in a negative way). Anna was quick (often faster than me, despite the rating gap) to spot attacking ideas, but was often missing some of the defensive concepts.
What would you recommend to someone trying to get started in chess?

Pia is amazing, she played a similar plan like Magnus with different development. But Magnus being a bit more aggressive

this was just the most perfect approach to a chess video ive ever seen. doesnt hurt that youre moms voice is so lovely and youre just about as beautiful as it gets. but besides the aesthetics, it was an incredible way to get inside the mind of multiple chess masters to show HOW we should be thinking. well well done!

I think that knight e5-g6 was the best choice for Anna at 8:06 as it opens a lot of options all at once to check and to pin, and it stops his queen to e7. But the black rook makes king on h1 a constant danger and weakness not to be forgotten.

I appreciate these videos for multiple reasons. One, is the principles that are mentioned, such as pawn structure. That way when I can't figure out the best way to get the opponent, I defer to the principles.

That was super instructive. I love how before she (Pia) looked at any tactics she evaluated the pawn structure and strong vs. weak pieces. Only then did she look at tactics. I'm going to remember that.
