    I own both saws. They are very different saws. I like both. I bought the 261 because it is relatively light and cuts well for a 50 cc saw. I like it for tree diameters less than 14 inches and limbing. I have a 20-inch bar and I am out west cutting softwood. My 550i is for large diameter trees and it has a 32-inch bar. It weighs 5 to 6 lbs. more than the 261. I use it for cutting large trees and that is why I bought it. It is very very fast. So, I don't understand why you own three saws that are approximately the same size. The cost difference between the 500i and the 261 doesn't make sense given that you own three saws of similar size.

      EXACTLY. The 261 and 362 are AMAZING saws I own BOTH bought them NEW I also have a MS 180 that I put a regular 050 chain on and it cuts AWSOME Now. No modifications needed just a bar swap and chain. And then I have a WCS upgraded 462. There is NO comparison at ALL from a 50cc and even a 60cc saw to a 72cc saw. I cut up over a cord of standing dead ash trees last weekend and I started with the big stuff with the 462. After I finished with the larger stuff 18 22 inch stuff I went to the 261 for the smaller stuff. And it felt like a TOY. It was soooo Different it felt like a saw you buy at wall mart or something. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my 261. IT is amazing for what it is. But you cant compare it to a 70cc saw that costs 1000+. The 362 is kinda eh.. I like it but for larger stuff its 70cc...... 60cc saws are kinda meh... smaller stuff 10lb 261.... larger 70cc... IDK..

      Do you have a 461 or 661? I had a 500i and did not believe it's torque is in line with a saw that would pull the longer bars. Just curious if you like it better than the bigger 661 (it's definitely faster until it's in big wood I don't disagree with that).

    • @justinsigmon1878
      @justinsigmon1878 Před 5 měsíci +2

      @mikeaustin1788 500i is a really fast saw but high rpm will rip thru stuff 6" to 20" really good but when you lay into a huge piece the bigger saws are straight torque monsters that won't stop and the 500i won't keep up when sinking the bar.

    I love my MS261C. Ran Husqvarna 55 and 455 before that. Your comments on the 261 vs farm and ranch saws are spot on with my observations. Definitely worth the money. Yes it wants to cut. I just hold the saw firmly and let the saw do the work. No pushing, just controlled rock back and forth. It cuts a lot on a tank of gas too. My Dad says it “throws more wood chips per drop of gas” than the farm and ranch saws. I run an 18” bar as I just use the saw for property maintenance and personal firewood production. I rarely cut trees larger than 16” diameter. It’s nice knowing I could put a 20” bar on the 261 if I needed it for larger trees. I have no doubt it would handle it fine, but the 18” seems ideal with the power.

    I own both the 261 & 500i. I bought the 500i first and the 261 a year after. The 500i is fast for cutting up wood. When you get use to it and go back to the 261 it seem slow and you’r bent over in the same place forever. For most home owners the 261 is the perfect saw. The 400 is a good in-between saw also. Robert. Yes. Your comment about a 400 in between saw - is dead on. I run a 260, 362 and a 500. ( other saws too around the farm ). But when I get to firewood these are my three.
      In a Perfect world ? A 261, 400 and 500 is my dream team. Love the 362 which is my go to I notice but for half a pound the 400 would add another HP. But the 362 is a screamer with a 20 inch Light bar for limping and bucking small to medium logs. The 500 with a 25 Light eats up anything and then the 260 Pro handles all the small jobs. So upgrade to a 261 from the 260 for me; then the change the 362 for a 400 !! You dead on.

    Nice saw! Back in 93, I bought a stihl O64av, putting out 85cc. It set me back about $835 bucks back then. The 500i comes in a little lighter. My guess is performance wise, close to the same. Add in 30 years of inflation between the two saws, and you're at the $1600 mark. Thanks for sharing!

      Very interesting! I didn’t know the 064 was so much in 1993. You’re right about the inflation since then putting the 500i at about that same money (in today’s equivalent). What’s interesting is that about 2 years ago, the 500i was several hundred dollars cheaper! I should have been looking at them back then. I imagine the 261C was also around $100 less in 2020 than it is now.

    I have a 261 and a 462. I really like the 261 and will generally reach for it because it's so light and handy. I'm not an arborist although I do occasionally fall trees. I make wooden bowls and use my saws mostly to cut up logs and prepare them for turning. One of the things I frequently have to do which arborists almost never do, is make rip cuts to cut the pith out of the blanks. This involves making two rip cuts just on either side of the pith. About the only area that the 261 falls down in is in making these cuts. Rip cuts produce long stringy shavings rather than smaller chips typical in a cross cut, and the 261 can't seem to deal with those. The chip exhaust quickly becomes clogged and I frequently have to stop to clear it out by hand. My 462 just blows them right out the back and happily keeps cutting.

    Because logs are heavy, I usually use the tractor to haul the tree full length or in sections up to the wood pile and then cut it. Or drag it to an open area where I can stack it on a pallet, then use the forks to move it. This way I move logs less often.
    I bought the same saw this week. Just processed a 12" spruce that had fallen over the winter, quite the upgrade from my MS170. I don't think I would have bought a new saw if I already had 2 farm saws. The VP of finance would have said no.

    • @PurpleCollarLife
      @PurpleCollarLife  Před 3 měsíci +2

      It’s definitely nice when you can move the log to a better place to cut and not need to carry it out of the woods like I did here. The MS261 is certainly an upgrade from the 2 farm saws I had. Thankfully the VP of Finance here understands that I need to have good equipment to make content for the channel. :) AND - I was able to get a good amount out of my MS271 Farm Boss by selling it on the FB marketplace. The 261C is a fine 50cc pro saw for smaller stuff and limbing especially if time is NOT money. The 500i shines when looking for a saw with authority.....like when felling leaners using bore cuts where speed and power equals safety. Most home owners and recreational cutters should not be messing with those trees anyway. The 500i also makes short work bucking bigger stuff. Both saws together make a very nice combo. Be safe.

    Congratulations on your purchase! I own the 261, as well as the 462 and the 500i. I don't think ANY kind of a fair comparison can be made between the 261 and the 500. You're talking about two different animals completely, and 30cc's difference. That's an apples to oranges comparison. I could have seen if you were thinking "should I go with the 261, or the 362, or 400"? Then you'd have just been comparing between a 50 and a 60, or 65cc saw. But comparing a 50cc saw to an 80cc saw just doesn't equate.
    I LOVE my 261, and I think you will too. It's a great saw, especially for limbing, and carrying around for an extended period of time. Do yourself a favor though. We're getting into late Fall and Winter now, take your saw cover off, and check to see if your slide (on the right-hand side) under the cover is flipped to "Winter-mode". If you're not familiar with what I'm talking about, read your owner's manual. Adjusting that slide from Summer to Winter mode affects your carburetor, and shouldn't be forgotten.
    Good video, thanks!

      Excellent comment and right on point and mentioning the carb shuttle piece/ cover, whatever the heck it is called. VERY Important, and I’m hoping the Dealer took care of this? They usually have a depiction of Sun and Snow for the respective seasons. Easy to remember as One wants the heat blocked off in the Summer, opened up in the Winter. I think I said that right? 🤔😆

      @JeffGeorgalas Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@georgedavall9449 Correct. I wouldn't count on a dealer for anything like that, and it's VERY simple to check/change yourself. Just pull the top cover off, and use a flat-headed screwdriver to pull the slide out yourself (if you can't just get it out with a fingernail) and either verify that it's in the correct position for the time of year, of flip it around and reinsert it if it's not already set correctly.

    I bought a little ms250 for my small firewood saw for the same reasons you bought the 261. Id of rather had the 261,but couldnt quite affird it at the time. I cut alot of oak,even 24" stuff with it all the time and its been great. When i cut bigger wood i start my top cut and rock the saw back over the back side of the log until i cut through the largest diameter of the middle of the log and then rotate the saw back around to my side and finish the cut. Ive got an old ms441c that wears a 28" bar that i used for my bigger firewood, but its been broke down. I hate working on it because its overengineered and very difficult

    • @PurpleCollarLife
      @PurpleCollarLife  Před 7 měsíci +2

      I considered the 250 for a smaller saw. But my goal with the 261C was to get a light-weight saw that cuts better than my 271 and 290. It fits the bill for me for the wood that I mostly cut. If I get to something bigger, I might find myself with a 2nd saw that is bigger some day.

    My 660 Stihl is my go to saw. I cut all of my firewood by myself and I need to cut as fast as possible. It never bogs down. I also have my 290 as a back up but honestly I get more tired with that because it takes a lot longer and I have to move down with my body with the saw. The 660 I just stand there and it goes through the wood like butter instantly. Plus you can have a longer bar as well.
    Try filling the hole in the seat with a little spray foam. Remove excess as it expands wipe off wet spray foam that gets on seat remove with acetone while still wet.

    so as an ex stihl dealer employee there are only 2 classifications of saws pro and homeowner. the pro saws if you really use a saw aka firewood or felling trees is the only option. the 261 is a great saw i personally prefer the 550xp v2 but i have ran them both extensively. in your situation i would sell the 271 and 290 and use those funds to get a 400c with a 24" bar at a discount. the larger engine class makes cutting rounds easy and the amount of work it saves you is worth every penny. my main saw is an 046 that i run with a 28" bar so bending over is a thing of the past and weight doesnt really matter considering its going to be buried in a log 90% of the time. i think getting a larger saw as your grunt work and the 261 as your small wood/ clean up saw is the perfect combo.

    I’d say if you’re thinking about buying a 500i but other options include the 261 then you don’t need a 500i. The 261 is made for medium work but the 500i is made to handle huge trees like Douglas fir.
    Saying you need to buy a new saw because you have to cut firewood and your choosing between the 261 and 500i is like saying you need a new gun to hunt foxes and you’re choosing between a 308 and a 50bmg
    If a 261 is good enough to get the job done then a 500i is overkill.

    Regardless of the model saw chosen you want to buy the lightest one that best matches the material you cut. My rule of thumb on all equipment is to figure out what does the job and buy the next model up. I personally would have considered the MS 361 for the hardwood cutting you describe. I run a 044 and 260 - good saws but the MS 361 could replace both. One thing I do with all saws is put a Cannon bar on them - Cannon bars don’t flex and rob power - they also last.

    I have the same thoughts. In my case here in Sweden it's rare with wider than 20-24 inch trees in the forests but mostly they're around 16-18" when harvested. On the other hand, the leaf trees here can be rather big too like elms and oaks. With that said, since I'm mostly in the forest felling, cutting and limbing spruce my range goes from MS201, MS241 and MS251. Would defininitely go for a MS261 in case of getting one more. MS201 with 14" is great for small limbs and in thinning, MS241 with 14" for felling and limbing a little bit bigger. I use the 251 with 18" for felling of the biggest trees as it is right now. I also have a philosophy of not carry more weight than necessary.

    The MS290 is 2004 tech but that’s not to put it down. In its day it was a great saw and the entire range of spares is widely available. A 56cc saw at 5.9kg, 2.8kW, it’s still a desirable saw for the money. Now superseded by the MS270/271, which is a reduced 50.2cc, with less vibs., and greater fuel efficiency. At 5.6kg but alas down on power at 2.6kW. I suppose you get what you pay for.
    The MS260 was a legend and good running old ones are sort after. One of the last non chipped saws, so easy to fix and repair. But its replacement, the MS261 is in another league; though it’s a a chipped saw, so repair ranges from a screwdriver & Allen key to hooking it up to a dealers’ software. Lightweight yet powerful, it could run a 20” at a push but comes alive on 18”. Fuel efficient, less vibs., less emissions, less noise and reliable. What’s not to like. Like the 260, the 261 is a true all day saw.
    The MS500i is a different beast. A 2019 saw with less emissions for its size; 79.2cc, 6.1kg and 5kW. Will live on a 25” and handle a 28” maybe even a 32”. And is a live wire on 18”-20. But unless you’re Popeye or are cutting big stems for a living, it’s not an all day saw. Too much for firewood but great for bigger stuff, with less vibs. and excellent pick-up on the revs. It’s only downsides, are that it voraciously drinks fuel and eats clutch bearings.

    261 us very popular in Europe where we don’t have trees the size of a house like in US. Most cutting can be done either with 550xp,560xp or 261, 362. Only time I needed larger than 60cc saw was when I had a tree with a diameter 80cm, 291 did this. I guess some guys here buy a larger saw to impress the neighbors wife or to play a weekend warrior.

    Flowering pears are problematic since the branches grow more upward compared to other trees causing the branches to break off easier compared to other trees. 45 degree angle. I just added the MS 171 to my collection. I have an old Homelite with a 14 inch bar and after a dozen or so years of abuse, it is ready for retirement. I also have the Husq 455 (18") and the Sthil 036 (20") for the big stuff. Why do I get the feeling that the sawmill will be delivered very soon????

    Congrats on that new saw, and LOVE that old Ford tractor! 😊
    I couldn’t help but think, wow @ that ‘poor’ New Saw and chain, getting ‘broke’ in real fast? 😯 I am guessing you took it easy on it off camera. Although my local Stihl dealer said to run my new saw “like I stole it!”
    Would be interested to see what that Dealer had to say about Ethanol free gas You alluded to? Stay safe out there! 👍

      @PurpleCollarLife  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thanks for watching! It’s a great saw. The dealer said go ahead and run it once it was warmed up. So we gave it a go. :) It still runs great.
      The dealer said he’d rather I use regular gas (not ethanol free) and use it up in a week, than store ethanol free gas for months at a time.

      @georgedavall9449 Před 3 měsíci

      @@PurpleCollarLife You’re Welcome and thanks for reply! Well Your Dealer has a good point on the gas, IF If You were to use it up right away. I was taking to a landscape guy at the gas station recently, and he said he went through the gas so much and so fast, he used straight pump gas to mix up.
      Personally, I’m either using pre mix in my newer saws, or E free Premium pump gas to mix in my older saws. I try to not mix up more than I need at one time, and I mix it at around 40/45:1. This is a hot topic, and open to much debate. I recently pulled the muffler off my 20+ year old Husky 345, and the piston looked clean, and I could even see the honing marks from the factory!
      An old timer Dealer I know told me a long time ago, to use high test gas when mixing two stroke. He had just attended a ‘Fuel School’ seminar at Stihl. Octane numbers go down over time. I use Seafoam or StaBil in my Gas that I store for my portable Genny and my other equipment, and rotate it out, and have no problems. Of course, to each their own, and YMMV! Stay safe!

    Great purchase you should love it. I decided on a 261c I can’t even remember how many years ago it was the first version because the year later they came out with the version two where the side cover design was changed a little bit and I’ve loved the purchase ever since have no complaints whatsoever it’s my go to saw it’s the first one I grab all the time and it always fires right up does the job and then I put it away I bet I’ve cut over 20cord a year with it since purchase maybe more.
    And my reasoning on purchasing it instead of the wood boss or the farm boss is to be honest those are homeowner saws and heavier even being all plastic and even though if properly taken care of they can still last long time they’re just not built as solid as the pro saws with the magnesium cases and better parts so I figured I’d go with the saying that I try to live by which is buy once cry once lol and I have zero regrets for paying More for the pro saw.
    I also have the 462C and I did end up getting the 500i because as soon as it was available in the United States I was at my dealer begging them to call me as soon as they had one in so I could purchase the first one haha i was just fascinated to try the first fuel injected chainsaw and it does not disappoint it’s a awesome saw and I don’t regret purchasing it either but I take that with me when I’m going to cut wood for stuff bigger then the 20” bar on my 261c as it came with a 28” light bar. But I would say in a given day that I’m out cutting trees up I am using the 261C 90% of the time and only grab the 500i when it’s a tree that starts getting too big I love both of them.😂

      @PurpleCollarLife  Před 7 měsíci +3

      Thanks for sharing your experience. I am amazed at the difference between the 261 and the 271. The 500i seems like an amazing fuel-injected saw. It's great technology and looks like it really rips through the wood in the videos I've seen. But that price tag - yikes! I am glad I went with the 261 as my "everyday" chainsaw. :) Maybe someday in the future Stihl will sponsor our little channel and send me a 500i.

    As several other commenters have mentioned, get a longer bar! Your form for cutting is asking for a kickback in the face. You are bent over the saw and you are cutting with the tip hitting logs on the other side is the perfect recipe for kickback. Put a longer bar on the saw, use the tip when your down in the cut and don't have your face in line with the cut. Everybody thinks it wont happen to me, but you looked like the poster child for it. Stand up and buck (longer bar)

    I have both here in France. I like both very much. However, it is very difficult to compare the two as they are in different classes in both size (cc) Kw and the work they are designed for. For me on the bigger stuff there is nothing to touch the MS500i. The MS261C is great for the smaller trees and firewood.

      I'm impressed with the 261 so far - and can only imagine how powerful that 500i is. I'm curious what you use as a size breakover when you switch from the 261 to the 500i as far as cutting up rounds. Is it like 20" and bigger for the 500i?

      Hi. I generally take both with me when I go to our forest. (I do have a Husqvarna 455 which again is a nice saw to use along with a Stihl top handle saw.) I use both for cutting Oak which is our main species, we don't have much else. I use the 500i for felling and bucking. The power is a stark change and uplift in performance. It really is the "go-to" for getting the work done quickly...the 500i v 261 they don't really compare or would I want to. They are both great in my inventory. The 261 is great for smaller tree felling and branching. I am not a pro, just like quality tools. Both are fantastic saws and very happy with both @@PurpleCollarLife

    IMO, a 50cc saw is too small for 24” hardwoods. It works hard to complete the cut. Asking alot from a small engine over a longer period of time, will shorten engine life. For a similar price, you could have entered the 60cc league….a professional grade husky 555 autotune. More power, faster chain speed, better antivibe, adjustable oiler, and better fuel economy/wood cut ratio. Will pull a 24” chain, no problem, if you need a longer bar. Yes, a tad heavier, but egonomics are better, i think, and the extra weight is not noticeable when the saw is in the wood. I dare say, it would go thru those cuts a couple three seconds faster.😀 And easy starting, whether it’s +30° or -30°, the autotune works flawlessly. The airbox is charged with positive air pressure, so the airfilter stay cleaner, longer than a stihl. But there is hope…I saw you had Husqvarna saw pants….🤣 cheers from the great white north
