I was in Scotland with a friend and her daughter. I'm 65 and she's 63.....we love Scotland and believe it is not just for "young" people. Also, when I was your age I was a teacher in Germany and Austria....love those countries as well!
I agree - I first went to Scotland at 70 with my mate at 65. It was fantastic! I will say that mobility is necessary given the hills and steps you'll encounter but a working hip and 'can-do' spirit is all you need. What the host here didn't mention is the genuine warmth of Scottish people - they are fantastic. You might struggle to understand a few of the folks but keep at it , it is (mostly) English!

I am actually planning on going to Scotland this year. It's been on my bucket list for so long. Iceland was another on the list and I went there last year. It's so close to Scotland from Iceland that I made it next on my list. And also my heritage on my father's side is Scottish.

As a Scot, I think we're exceptionally friendly, to our visitors. We're a very inclusive, culture. If you have enough cash, we can even make you, your own individual tartan. How cool is that? But there are some truly beautiful places in American and Canada, too.

0:42 - Youse - LOL! Movie - Gregory's Girl! You got Glasgow right, but 4:29 - Edin-Burra 6:22 - Haggis Scotticus (East Coast) is much tastier than Haggis Caledonius (West Coast). It's much leaner, as they get to run around the highland more up around John O'Groats. They have very sharp teeth though, so be careful. Because of a leg length difference (that has formed over the millenniums) you need two people to catch a Wild Haggis - one to make it run the other way, and other at the bottom of the hill, with a burlap sack. I love your enthusiasm and energy. Great advocate for tourism and exploring new places.
great video , i decided to go to edinburgh on my rotation time off here in the oil fields of north dakota , im blessed to have time and money to travel , ill be going to scotland in january , london is my favorite place but i think edinburgh will take its place , thanks for your energy in this video , makes me look forward to the trip
If nobody minds, I would just like to make one addition. My hometown is Edinburgh, where I was born and raised, and left at age 17 years for the civil service in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. At age 18, I had to do two years national service in the RAF, and was fortunate enough to be posted to RAF Kinloss, in Morayshire, Scotland, which I would probably never have seen, without national service. Anyway, I HAVE to bring up a part of Scotland, which is seldom mentioned, and that would be the BORDERS ! All the way from Berwickshire to Wigtownshire is magic, with smashing scenery, and people. It isn't too touristy. and, perhaps, the locals prefer it that way, but you will still get a great welcome. I just think that the BORDERS are very special, and deserve a mention.
if you want to just go over the viaduct and want it to be a bit cheaper, just take a train along the west highland way as it goes along the exact same route but in a normal train.
27/12/2021 I hope you have tried haggis now. It is beautiful. Secret is to eat small quantities I.e. ice cream scoop size. Chicken breast stuffed with haggis will blow your mind. Soft mashed potatoe + mashed turnip and haggis is wonderful.
Another couple of movies you may like set in Scotland from the Director Bill Forsyth, Gregory's Girl and Local Hero. Films I loved growing up and still do today.

We recently uncovered a new castle in Scotland, one that was rumored to be there but no one could find, Partick castle on the banks of the rivers Kelvin and Clyde. It was uncovered during building works to create new halls of residence for overseas students, ironically enough. There was a huge battle close to there by the forces of Mary, Queen of Scots and her brother, Regent Moray. The battle of Langside. No one knew why the street I live in was called Regent Moray, some folks had vague ideas and virtually no one remembers who he was. I've done some research and he was a man of his times. Not very nice. The warrior spirit and clansmanship still lives. Galgael is my clan and my family and we have people from all over the world. I'd love you to be a member: www.galgael.org/

Just got back from my first trip to Scotland Nov. 16-22, 2019 and it was the BEST times and vacation EVER in so many ways! I could live there in a heartbeat! You're incredible too!
Im scottish too, but live down south at the momment. My familly live in the Skye area and further north too. I noticed that alot of people that visit the area miss out on some other beautifull spots not really mentioned by anyone I have seen visiting the area. My familly did bed and breakfast for tourists. Also the village of Plockton where the televison series called Hamish Mcbeth is based starring Robert Carlyle. Six miles away from Skye (my sisters middle name lol). Also that area was tropical at one point as the mexican gulf stream used to sweep up that part of the coast and made natural palm trees grow there. They are few in numbers as over the years since the gulf stream changed. Also just on the edge of the village of Plockton is a coral beach hidden, which not many people know about. On the Isle of Skye their is a sheepskin rug shop. Their from sheep that naturally died (not killed). They cost £100 roughly and up. Duncraig crags is a hidden area only local people really know. There are lochs on the top of the mountain. Also the Applecross pass is a must go (highest road in Britain). It goes straight up to the top of the mountain.

If you're on a driving holiday in the UK you can have a few "sherberts" and be perfectly legal next day BUT stray into Scotland, get breathalysed, and you could be looking at cold hard cell of the nearest police station. Their alc limit is 50mg, 80mg south of the border. Be warned and avoid a potential disaster.

Scotland was once tropical, and with the planets rotation it will some day (millions of years from now) be tropical again. When that time comes all the tropical countries today will be like the arctic, covered in ice and snow, this is the planets natural order of things.
John Muir (the guy who persuaded Teddy Roosevelt to create Yellowstone park) was from Dunbar, a small harbour town on the coast about 30 miles east of Edinburgh. My family live there. It's worth a visit!

Enjoyable vid and love your enthusiasm. Come back soon! You're half right about the expansion of education since the 60s but wrong to state that Scotland's ancient Unis were just for the wealthy. Remember that, from the 16th Century, Scotland had 5 Unis (if you regard King's and Marischal Colleges in Aberdeen as separate establishments) whereas England (with about 10x the population) only had 2. Education in Scotland has always had an egalitarian aspect to it.
I used to live next to a University so I'd meet a lot of foreign students in the pubs, Americans were always amazed that Scottish people are known as "Jocks".
Awesome Job Stephanie! Yes, Scotland is hands down my most favorite place to visit. I visited in 2007 and about 6 more times since - most recently June of 2019. Had another 2 week trip planned this past May but alas COVID. Weather is iffy and can be cold even in May/June 50's 60's. I love nature, animals, gorgeous scenery, and the Scottish culture- people so so kind and gracious always- hospitality THEE BEST. The land, the forests, the woods are truly MAGICAL and unlike anything in the US. it is an unspoiled land. The rich history is amazing. The pubs, yes the Scotch, food is getting better, Haggis is good but I'm off meat.. Couple of other great shows filmed in Scotland: Hamish MacBeth, Stone of Destiny, Case Histories, Great Estates of Scotland, Local Hero (one of my favorites!), Rob Roy, The Water Horse, of course Braveheart. They're talking about imposing a tourist tax to reduce the impact tourism is having on the country. It wont get to a point where the country is overrun.
Some things about Scotland which are maybe not known, for such a small population, the accent and even dialect can change within just a few miles, it's also a cosmopolitan country and being Scottish can also mean having asian decent, half german, part english etc. Some of the 'clan' stuff and tartan is a bit designed and it's sense of culture is more ancient and also very forward at the same time.
Everything you said about my beloved homeland is true, but don't tell everybody. You are right about tourism though. If you sit outside a cafe in Edinburgh you can have a game of "What's that language" as you listen to the tourists walk by. So when do you start with the tourist board?

I am really impressed on your appreciation of the clan system. This is the best description of Scotland i have encountered and a really succinct description of my country. For someone that cannot pronounce Edinburgh you have done a fantastic job and a fantastic review.

If you're on a driving holiday in the UK you can have a few "sherberts" and be perfectly legal next day BUT stray into Scotland, get breathalysed, and you could be looking at cold hard cell of the nearest police station.
Their alc limit is 50mg, 80mg south of the border.
Be warned and avoid a potential disaster.

Love the enthusiasm for my country but it does not surprise me as it really is magical in many ways. It was always a joy coming back in my many years of travel, there is nowhere remotely like it for its natural beauty. Haste ye back lassie.
Scotland was once tropical, and with the planets rotation it will some day (millions of years from now) be tropical again. When that time comes all the tropical countries today will be like the arctic, covered in ice and snow, this is the planets natural order of things.

John Muir (the guy who persuaded Teddy Roosevelt to create Yellowstone park) was from Dunbar, a small harbour town on the coast about 30 miles east of Edinburgh. My family live there. It's worth a visit!

Enjoyable vid and love your enthusiasm. Come back soon! You're half right about the expansion of education since the 60s but wrong to state that Scotland's ancient Unis were just for the wealthy. Remember that, from the 16th Century, Scotland had 5 Unis (if you regard King's and Marischal Colleges in Aberdeen as separate establishments) whereas England (with about 10x the population) only had 2. Education in Scotland has always had an egalitarian aspect to it.

I used to live next to a University so I'd meet a lot of foreign students in the pubs, Americans were always amazed that Scottish people are known as "Jocks".

Awesome Job Stephanie! Yes, Scotland is hands down my most favorite place to visit. I visited in 2007 and about 6 more times since - most recently June of 2019. Had another 2 week trip planned this past May but alas COVID. Weather is iffy and can be cold even in May/June 50's 60's. I love nature, animals, gorgeous scenery, and the Scottish culture- people so so kind and gracious always- hospitality THEE BEST. The land, the forests, the woods are truly MAGICAL and unlike anything in the US. it is an unspoiled land. The rich history is amazing. The pubs, yes the Scotch, food is getting better, Haggis is good but I'm off meat.. Couple of other great shows filmed in Scotland: Hamish MacBeth, Stone of Destiny, Case Histories, Great Estates of Scotland, Local Hero (one of my favorites!), Rob Roy, The Water Horse, of course Braveheart. Cheers!

They're talking about imposing a tourist tax to reduce the impact tourism is having on the country. It wont get to a point where the country is overrun.
One city is talking about introducing a £2.00 or 2.61 dollars tourist tax not the whole country.
I do want to come but I will dislike the forecast. But I will come as it is in my bucket list.
Some things about Scotland which are maybe not known, for such a small population, the accent and even dialect can change within just a few miles, it's also a cosmopolitan country and being Scottish can also mean having asian decent, half german, part english etc. Some of the 'clan' stuff and tartan is a bit designed and it's sense of culture is more ancient and also very forward at the same time.

Hey Stephanie, I loved your video thank you for your kindness and generosity towards our beautiful country. You asked your viewers to add any points they love about Scotland to, I love the fact we have 75% the land mass of England but with less than 10% of their population. The untapped resources our country has in terms of potential growth and development are phenomenal. We have just over 50% the income from tourism England has, the future for Caledonia is very bright, bring on independence.
Oh! Just a little note also, the colour of blue for a Saltire should be a pale to mid sky blue, there is a correct pantone shade for it.
