      Odd, I was reading the manual for my 2019 F150 5.0 and it says 8.8L. That's not good if it actually is supposed to take 10L. I guess that's why you always fire up the motor and let the oil pump around a bit and check the stick and then top up.

    Oil is always thicker when cold, regardless if it's 0W-20 or 20W-50. Have to compare the W and non-W rating numbers for viscosity comparisons at temperature.
    Forgot to mention for the Gen3 Coyote that Ford recommends 5W-30 for track use. Better engine protection with higher oil temperatures due to track use.

  • @Resistculturaldecline
    @Resistculturaldecline Před 2 lety +2

    A small tidbit. The oil doesn't thicken when warm. The W "winter" is relative comparison to how that number (0,5,10,etc.) of straight-weight would flow at the designated cold temp.
    The latter number (20,30,40,50,etc) is its flow in relative comparison to a straight-weight of that number at that high temp.

  • @Avantgardist
    @Avantgardist Před 5 lety +19

    0:50 : That is not true. The oil does not get thicker when it gets warmer, the opposite is true. The first number only tells you until which temperature the oil remains "pumpable". The oil will nevertheless get thinner when heated up.
    The first and second number (before and after the "W") refer to different standards, hence the confusion (a 20W50 does not flow as well at low temperatures as a 5W20 does at high temperatures, just because the number says "20").

    • @tylerphelps4868
      @tylerphelps4868 Před 3 lety +2

      Not quite. Each number is a straight grade rating. The 5w means it will act like a straight 5 weight oil would when at 0C and lower. The 20 or 30 in a 5w20/5w30 means it will act like a 30 weight at 100C. You’re right though, thickening only happens with oxidation and contamination

      The only reason Ford recommends 5w20 is for fuel economy. I did not buy my Mustang for it’s great fuel economy. 5w30 is recommended if you bring the car to the track and 5w50 is recommended if you add a supercharger. So, it does not appear that the Coyote has any issues with running a thicker oil.

I also have worked for Ford for 17 years and am not running any of them 10,000 mile intervals as recommended. Any of us who know or build engines know that 10k on oil is horrible and horrible for the motor.

    This is the oil that is better suited to accommodate oil blow-by (the rings) so it can be burned in the combustion chamber and foul the plugs. So, in the big picture your oil level dwindles and your engine blows. Ford quality is and has gone down the crapper.

    5W50 (or 5W20) is not "thinner" when cold. All oil is thicker (higher viscosity) when cold than hot, it's just that a straight 5 weight or 30 weight has a certain curve it follows between cold and hot. A multi-weight oil allows you to have the best of both worlds. A 5W50 follows the curve of a thin (5 weight oil) when cold, but when hot follows the curve of a higher viscosity 50 weight oil when hot. A straight 5 weight oil would be almost uselessly thin at 200F while a straight 50 weight would be too thick to even flow at 0F on a cold winter day.

    Amsoil is the absolute best engine oil you can buy. I’ve studied engine oils for years and no one comes close to amsoil. Motorcraft is worse than valvoline. Mobile 1 is garbage as well. Quakerstate is decent, Castrol is garbage, royal purple is decent but only for race engines and it’s not meant for winter conditions or long lasting. Pen Zoila is decent all around and would be my second choice. But again, amsoil is THE NUMBER 1 oil. Test it and find out for yourselves. Oh and wix filters and motorcraft oil filters are a good quality filter. Fran is the worst. Buy a bunch of filters and cut the tops off “the thread ends” and take them apart and examine them. Plus look at the filtration numbers and the flow rate. And again my statements are backed up by non biased independent sources and studies in scientific labs. Like I said research it.

    Let me tell you the truth about oils. First off the first number mean weight of oil which is measured at 240 degrees, next is that the second number is pure fiction and doesnt exist because any oil becomes thinner as it rises above 240 degrees. So 5w 20 or 30 or 40 is still 5 weight oil that will drop down to the thinness of transmission fluid when it gets hot and ATF is a 1.5 Weight oil. That first number is real and any other number is a fictional lie from marketer sales. I retired from Houston fuel oil and was in the refineries daily and know what this oil is and what is real. I live in Houston Tx where it gets very hot so I use a 20 W 50 oil, but I know im actually using a 20 weight. People using 5 weight oil is what causes premature clattering and knocking in todays vehicles. FYI all dealerships have SAE straight 30 weight in their oil tanks that they use on these vehicles with the 5W 20 on the oil caps
